Voices against plan to set up paper mill in Chamkaur Sahib get louder; cite environmental concerns
Patiala: A large number of activists gathered at a gurdwara in Fatehpur village near Chamkaur Sahib on Monday to show their opposition to a proposed paper mill in the area, citing concerns over the unit causing pollution.
The gathering comes over a week after environmentalist and AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal had written to the
Punjab Pollution Control Board
(PPCB) and the Punjab environment minister to urge them to junk the clearance to the mill.
Environmentalists from Punjab Action Committee (PAC), Ludhiana, including Kapil Arora and Jaskirat Singh, and activists such as Gangveer Rathore, Amitoj Mann, Lakha Sidhana, Hamir Singh, and Parvinder Kitna, attended the gathering. Residents of nearby Dhaulran, Fatehpur, Bassi Gujran, and other villages too participated in the gathering.
The project had earlier sparked a controversy over the owners taking over part of panchayati land in the village.

People at the gathering decided to oppose the setting up of the mill during a public hearing on April 30. However, before the public hearing, activists carried out mass mobilisation against the setting up of this mill, for which around 130 acres of land has been acquired, covering land in Bassi Gujran and Dhaulran villages. They said 24.5 acres of land belonged to the village panchayat of Dhaulran, but it was sold by a village panchayat in the past, allegedly under political pressure.
Rathore said 62 village panchayats in Chamkaur Sahib had passed resolutions against the setting up of the mill in Dhaulran, which also comprises over 50% of the Dalit population. "Around 40 village panchayats had earlier passed resolutions against the setting up of this paper mill. HC orders closure of Tasmac shop causing nuisance to public
Madurai: It is contradictory for a welfare govt to establish more hospitals on the one hand and simultaneously establish Tasmac shops on the other hand, observed Madras high court while directing the authorities to close a Tasmac shop situated in Dindigul district. The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by K Kannan. The petitioner stated that a Tasmac shop on Trichy Road in Dindigul, is causing nuisance to the public, especially children using the road to go to schools. Hence, the petitioner moved court seeking to immediately close the shop. In the counter, the Dindigul district Tasmac manager submitted that the petitioner's claim, is incorrect. The shop is located within the corporation limits, where the prohibited distance is 50m as per Rule 8 of Tamil Nadu Liquor Retail Vending (in Shops and Bars) Rules, 2003. However, since the shop is situated in a commercial area, the proviso to Rule 8 of the Rules states that the distance restriction shall not apply. A division bench of justice S M Subramaniam and justice A D Maria Clete observed that mere adherence to the distance criterion is insufficient when certain mitigating circumstances are raised by an aggrieved citizen. The judges observed that Article 47 of the Constitution directs that the state shall regard the raising of the level of nutrition and the standard of living of its people and the improvement of public health as among its primary duties. "Constitutional philosophy and the directive principles insist that a welfare govt should strive wholeheartedly to enforce prohibition, rather than establish more Tasmac shops which adversely affect public health. It is contradictory for a welfare govt to establish more hospitals on the one hand and simultaneously establish Tasmac shops on the other. This is not in consonance with Constitutional ethos. When the right to health is a fundamental right, the state must ensure that the prohibition is slowly implemented in a phased manner to reduce harm to public health," the judges observed. The judges observed that in the present case, the road is used by the children to reach their school and it serves as a direct pathway. Consequently, the Tasmac shop would undoubtedly cause public nuisance to the road users and school children. "The closure of one Tasmac shop would not cause any prejudice but would rather benefit the public at large," the judges observed and directed the authorities to close the shop within two weeks.

Former Sena corporator booked for drunk driving and assaulting doctor in Thane
Thane: The Rabodi police have booked a former Shiv Sena corporator for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, dangerously ramming his car into another vehicle, and assaulting a doctor in a road rage incident near Castle Mill area on Tuesday evening. According to the complaint lodged by a 31-year-old doctor residing in Thane and working at a Bhiwandi civil hospital as an orthopaedic surgeon, the incident occurred around 6:50 pm. The doctor and his sister were returning home in their car after picking up a food parcel from Vikas Complex. As they approached the Meena Tai Thackeray Chowk, another car driven by Mahesh Wagh allegedly recklessly in the wrong lane collided with the doctor's vehicle. The police said that the doctor stated he slowed down his car to avoid the impact, but Wagh's car still struck the front-right side of his car. Even as he attempted to step out, the accused allegedly scraped the vehicle further while trying to drive off. When the doctor signalled the driver to stop, the man reportedly accelerated and hit the doctor's foot. Eyewitnesses gathered at the scene as the altercation escalated. The police were called, and the accused was taken to Rabodi police station. Officers noted that the man, identified as Wagh, was under the influence of alcohol and was shouting loudly while he was at the Rabodi police station. He was booked for rash driving, drunk driving, causing hurt, and assault. The police said that the legal process and probe are underway in the case.
