Ecuador names Valencia, Plata in squad for World Cup qualifiers
QUITO, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Brazil-based forwards Enner Valencia and Gonzalo Plata have been included in Ecuador's squad for World Cup qualifiers against Brazil and Peru despite injury concerns, the Ecuadorian football federation said on Friday.
Internacional's Valencia has missed the Porto Alegre club's past six games due to a hamstring strain, while Flamengo's Plata has been sidelined since April with a knee injury.
"They are in a complicated situation but they are currently in the process of recovering," Ecuador manager Sebastian Beccacece told reporters.
The Argentine coach recalled Leonardo Campana and Angelo Preciado, who missed Ecuador's last double header of qualifiers in March with injuries.
As expected, the 28-man squad includes Brighton left-back Pervis Estupinan, Paris Saint-Germain center-back Willian Pacho and Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.
Ecuador will meet Brazil in Guayaquil on June 5 and Peru in Lima five days later.
Beccacece's men are currently second in the 10-team South American group with four qualifiers remaining. The top six teams will automatically qualify for next year's World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada while the seventh-ranked side will dispute a playoff.

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Mohammad Haris smashed Pakistan's second fastest century in a T20 game to complete a 3-0 sweep for his team against Bangladesh on Sunday. The wicketkeeper-batter raised his first T20 hundred off 45 balls and remained unbeaten on 107 as a new-look Pakistan cruised to 197-3 for a seven-wicket win in the third Twenty20 with 16 balls to spare. Bangladesh had earlier made 196-6, its highest total in a T20 against Pakistan, after Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha won his third successive toss of the series but decided to chase for the first time. Haris continued to follow Pakistan's new aggressive batting approach in coach Mike Hesson's first series as white-ball head coach. Haris hit seven sixes and eight boundaries and also became the first non-opening Pakistan batter to score a T20 century. Union Berlin forward Benedict Hollerbach is switching to Bundesliga rival Mainz
BERLIN (AP) — Union Berlin is losing its main attacking threat for next season after selling Benedict Hollerbach to Bundesliga rival Mainz. Hollerbach is leaving after playing 65 competitive games for Union, the Köpenick-based team said Sunday. Kicker magazine reported that Mainz was playing a fee of 10 million euros ($11.4 million) for the 23-year-old forward. Hollerbach was getting a four-year contract, Mainz said, to become the club's second signing of the offseason after young Austrian defender Konstantin Schopp joined from Sturm Graz the day before. Hollerbach scored 14 goals in 62 league games for Union, with nine of them coming last season to help the team stay in the Bundesliga for another year. The team's top scorer also set up four goals for teammates who mostly struggled to create openings without him on the field. 'Benedict continuously developed during his time with us and always gave his all for the club,' Union sporting director Horst Heldt said. Balogun to miss the CONCACAF Gold Cup, dropped from US roster already without Pulisic, McKennie

(AP) — Forward Folarin Balogun will miss the CONCACAF Gold Cup because of an ankle injury and was among three players dropped Sunday from a roster already without Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Antonee Robinson, Yunus Musah and Gio Reyna. Defender DeJuan Jones (lower body) and midfielder Sean Zawadzki (knee) also were let go by coach Mauricio Pochettino, who added defenders Walker Zimmerman and Nathan Harriel along with forward Paxten Aaronson. Four players have been replaced from the 27-man group announced May 22. Goalkeeper Patrick Schulte injured an oblique and was replaced on Wednesday by Chris Brady.
