West Asia tensions disrupt flights from Kannur airport in Kerala, Gulf-bound passengers hit

Passengers travelling to and from the Gulf countries via the Kannur international airport in Kerala faced major disruptions after multiple flights were cancelled or diverted in the wake of escalating conflict in the West Asia following Iran's missile strike of US military bases in Qatar on Monday night.

Flight services to Gulf destinations such as Sharjah, Doha and Fujairah were directly impacted. An Indigo flight (6E1503) bound for Fujairah that took off from Kannur was diverted to Mumbai due to airspace closure and later cancelled. Similarly, an Air India Express flight that departed at 7.23 for Doha was forced to return to Kannur shortly after take off and was subsequently cancelled.
The disruptions continues on Tuesday, with Air India Express calling off its scheduled flights to Sharjah (4.20p.m) and Doha (7.15p.m) from Kannur, citing continued airspace restrictions.
'Due to the evolving situation in the Middle East, some flights have been affected. Passengers are advised to check the latest status of their flights with their respective airlines before proceeding to the airport,' Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL) said in a passenger advisory issued on Tuesday.

IndiGo, one of the largest Asian airlines, Tuesday announced its annual 'Monsoon Sale,' with domestic flight priced as low as Rs 1,499, and international flights priced at Rs 4,399. The limited-time sale also offers exclusive discounts on a range of add-ons opted by passengers travelling both on IndiGo's domestic and international flights. The sale is valid for bookings made between June 24 and June 29 for travel between July 1 and September 21 this year. While the sale is on, customers can book all-inclusive one-way domestic flights with fares starting at Rs 1,499, and international flights with fares from Rs 4,399. For added comfort and extra legroom at an exceptional value, passengers can choose IndiGoStretch provision while booking, with fares starting Rs 9,999. Besides opting for flights at a discounted price, travelers can also avail add-on services at upto 50 per cent off. Travelers can now enjoy upto 50 per cent off on pre-paid excess baggage for domestic flights, and on 15 kg, 20 kg, and 30 kg bag allowances for international flights. IndiGo is also offering upto 50 per cent off on its 'Fast Forward' service, which includes priority check-in and anytime boarding, on select domestic and international flights. Meanwhile, standard seat selection is available at prices as low as Rs 99 on select domestic and international flights. Emergency XL (Extra Legroom) seats are available on domestic flights at rates starting at Rs 500. Both 6E Prime and 6E Seat & Eat services on select domestic and international flights are also available at upto 30 per cent off. Lastly, domestic travellers can secure their bookings with a Zero Cancellation Plan starting at Rs 299.

Gambhir, who returned to India after seven years in the San Francisco Bay Area, was impressed by Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport. A total of 16 international flights, six inbound and 10 outbound, were cancelled, disrupting travel plans for hundreds of passengers. Airport officials told the publication that the disruptions were directly linked to restricted airspace across the Gulf region, a ripple effect of escalating geopolitical tensions. Diversions: Five international flights originally bound for Doha's Hamad International Airport were rerouted to Bengaluru due to the temporary closure of Qatari airspace, the report said. These included Qatar Airways services from Osaka, Phuket, Jakarta, and Hong Kong, as well as a Virgin Australia flight from Sydney. The aircraft resumed their journeys after the airspace reopened, at around 3 am, the report stated. In similar news, Air India has announced several changes in their flight schedule, including cancellations, reduction in frequency and diversions, including cancellations of two of its international services from Bengaluru. A non-stop service to San Francisco, and a London-bound flight were recently cancelled from Bengaluru.

Departures that were called off included four IndiGo flights bound for Jeddah, Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Dubai; one Kuwait Airways flight to Kuwait; one Akasa Air flight to Abu Dhabi; two Air India Express flights to Dammam and Abu Dhabi; one Gulf Air flight to Bahrain; and one Air India flight to London. According to the publication, Bengaluru airport officials said they are closely monitoring the situation and advised passengers to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates.
