Federation Cup 2025: Vithya Ramraj breaks women's 400m hurdles meet record; Niharika Vashisht clinches triple jump gold
Olympian Vithya Ramraj appears to be in National record-breaking form this season. The 26-year-old from Tamil Nadu broke the six-year-old women's 400m hurdles meet record at the 28th National Federation Athletics Championships here on Wednesday and predicted bigger things this year.
'I could have gone faster but I was tired after yesterday's 400m. Had we had the hurdles tomorrow, I'd have surely done 54s,' said Vithya who clocked 56.04s and finished more than two seconds ahead of silver medallist Anu Raghavan.
Vithya equalled the great P.T. Usha's national record of 55.42s at the last Asian Games where she won the bronze. She felt the signs were good that the 41-year-old record would fall this year.
'I'm aiming for the Worlds and my goal is 54s. I had clocked 56s early this season, a sort of time I could only manage late last season. I'll surely end this year with 54,' said Vithya who also achieved the AFI's qualification standard for the Asians.
Meanwhile Karnataka's P. Yashas clocked a personal best 49.32s while winning the men's 400m hurdles (49.32s) but was disappointed that he could not get the 49.19s for an Asian ticket.

In another corner of the Maharaja's Stadium, Punjab's National Games champion Niharika Vashisht – an Instagram hit with nearly 2.4 lakh followers for her beautiful posts – was celebrating a triple jump personal best (13.49m), a last-round effort that saw her beat Kerala's Sandra Babu by 1cm for the gold.
The 29-year-old had completed a two-year doping suspension in February 2022 and now appears stronger than ever, improving her PB by more than 40cm in a year's time.
The results (winners only):
Men: 400m hurdles: P. Yashas (Kar) 49.32s. 3000m steeple chase: Sunil Joliya Jinabhai (Guj) 8:43.82s. Hammer throw: Damneet Singh (Reliance) 68.30m.
Women: 400m hurdles: Vithya Ramraj (TN) 56.04s, MR, OR 57.21s, Saritaben Gayakwad, 2019. 3000m steeple chase: Manju Ajay Yadav (MP) 10:34.08. Triple jump: Niharika Vashisht (Pun) 13:49m. Shot put: Vidhi (UP) 16.10m.

Asian champion 100m hurdler Jyothi Yarraji leads India's 6-gold show in Taiwan Open
Asian champion Jyothi Yarraji won the women's 100m hurdles race with yet another impressive time as India won six gold medals in the Taiwan Open international athletics competition here on Saturday. National record holder Yarraji clocked 12.99 seconds to pocket the gold at the Taipei Municipal Stadium, ahead of Japanese runners Asuka Terada (13.04 seconds) and Chisato Kiyoyama (13.10 seconds), who took the silver and bronze respectively. The 25-year-old Yarraji had won gold in the Asian Championships in South Korea on May 29 with a time of 12.96 seconds. Her national record stands at 12.78 seconds. Another national record holder, Tejas Shirse also won gold in the men's 110m hurdles, clocking 13.52 seconds, the second fastest time of his career. Local athletes Hsieh Yuan-kai (13.72 seconds) and Kuei-Ru Chen (13.75 seconds) won the silver and bronze respectively. The 23-year-old Shirse's national record stands 13.41 seconds. India's best 4x100m relay quartet of Gurindervir Singh, Animesh Kujur, Manikanta Hoblidhar and Amlan Borgohain won gold, clocking 38.75 seconds, just six-hundredth of a second outside of the national record of 38.69 seconds set by the same team at the National Relay Carnival in Chandigarh earlier this year. But, it fell short of the timing which would have taken the team to Tokyo World Championships. Fourteen countries have already qualified for the World Championships in September through the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China in May and only two slots are available. Nigeria and Netherlands are currently in the reckoning for the two slots with 38.20 seconds. The Indian team of Sudheeksha Vadluri, Sneha Sathyanarayana Shanuvalli, Abinaya Rajarajan and Nithya Gandhe won gold in the women's 4x100m relay, clocking 44.06 seconds. The national record in this event stands at 43.37 seconds clocked by the quartet of Archana S, Dhanalakshmi, Hima Das and Dutee Chand in 2021. Abdulla Aboobacker and Pooja also won gold in the men's triple jump and women's 1500m respectively. Aboobacker jumped 16.21m, well below his personal best of 17.19m. Pooja, who had won a silver in the Asian Championships in South Korea last month, clocked 4 minutes, 11.63 seconds to win the gold. She has a personal best of 4:09.52 which she had clocked in 2023.

Taiwan Athletics Open 2025: Jyothi Yarraji sprints to gold as India enjoy flurry of top spots
New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): Reigning Asian champion and Olympian Jyothi Yarraji continued her scorching form this season after she scripted a victory in the women's 100m hurdles as India bagged six gold medals on the opening day of the Taiwan Athletics Open 2025 in Chinese Taipei on Saturday. Jyothi sprinted to gold after clocking 12.99 seconds. Despite a scratchy start that forced her to drop in the second place, she managed to surge ahead in the last 20 metres and secured her spot at the top of the podium with a powerful finish. Jyothi had clocked 13.18s in the heats to earn a spot in the final and was the only athlete in the event to finish with a sub-13 timing in the final, according to Japan's Asuka Terada (13.04s) and Chisato Kiyoyama (13.10s) finished second and third, respectively, behind Jyothi. India's national record in the women's 100m hurdles also belongs to Jyothi. She clocked 12.78s to set the mark at the World University Games two years ago. Tejas Shirse, the national record holder in the men's 110m hurdles, also claimed gold in the event with a season-best time of 13.52s. Chinese Taipei's Yuan-Kai Hsieh and Chen Kuei-ru won silver and bronze with timings of 13.72s and 13.75s, respectively. India extended its dominance and won gold medals in the men's and women's 100m relays. Despite fumbling with the baton exchange, the quartet of Sudheeksha Vadluri, Abinaya Rajarajan, Sneha SS and Nithya Gandhe won the women's 100m relay with a meet record time of 44.07s. Sudheeksha V, who replaced Srabani Nanda, was the only new addition to the Indian women's relay team that won the Asian title last week. Vietnam finished second, and Asia Biomedical, a club, finished third with timings of 44.38s and 44.53s, respectively. The men's 100m relay saw the quartet of Gurindervir Singh, Animesh Kujur, Manikanta Hoblidhar, and Amlan Borgohain win the gold with a timing of 38.75s. Asia Biomedical (39.11) finished second while Taoyuan City (39.75) occupied the third spot. (ANI)
