Welshman Tarling wins Giro time trial in Tirana, Roglic in pink

WELSHMAN JOSH TARLING won stage two of the Giro d'Italia on Saturday, an individual time-trial in downtown Tirana on the second of three days in Albania.
In the overall standings, pre-race favourite and 2023 Giro champion Primoz Roglic grabbed the coveted pink jersey from Friday's stage winner Mads Pedersen, who was an agonising two seconds short of clinging on.
The 21-year old Tarling of Ineos is a time-trial specialist and finished the 13.7km circuit in 16min 07sec, 1sec faster than Roglic and 3sec faster than Jay Vine.
Decked out in the British national time-trial jersey, Tarling held his head in his hands as he watched Pedersen on the home stretch.
'Winning today is truly exceptional. Waiting for the other riders to finish the course was difficult. I don't want to go through that again,' he joked.
'I was afraid of all the favourites. Primoz was really impressive. so this first Grand Tour victory is a new step in my career,' said Tarling, who came fourth at the Olympic Games and might have won but for a heavy fall in tha rain.
Belgian star Wout van Aert had been expected to win this stage and claim the pink pullover but never put the hammer down as he struggles to overcome a stomach bug.
Of the main overall contenders most of them finished over 30sec down on Roglic, but with a relentless stream of hilly and mountain stages along the 3400km 21-day race, the Slovenian won't be getting excited yet.

Roglic leads his key rival Team UAE's Juan Ayuso by 16sec, as the 22-year-old Spaniard attempts to defend the title his team won with Tadej Pogacar in 2024.
Italian home hope Antonio Tiberi is 25sec down, Simon Yates of Visma is at 33sec and his twin brother Adam Yates of UAE is at 36sec.
Two former South American winners of the Giro Richard Carapaz of American outfit EF is 37sec done on Roglic and Colombian Egan Bernal is at 48.
Those kind of gaps can go up in smoke over the space of a kilometre in the high mountains during the final week.
The final week of the Giro will be decisive with stage 16 featuring five Alpine mountains, and stage 20 ending with a gruelling climb up the Colle delle Finestre to the Sestriere ski resort, the moment when the winner is likely to emerge.
The world and Olympic time-trial champion Remco Evenepoel is absent from this Giro, as are two other handy time trial riders Filippo Ganna and defending Giro and Tour de france champion Tadej Pogacar.
Albania is hosting the first three days of the 2025 Giro with the Balkan nation enjoying a tourism boom.
Sunday's third stage at Valona will showcase some of Albania's prettiest coastline, while the stage itself is largely flat and will favour the sprinters who were dropped in the hills Friday, and who suffered through Saturday's individual effort.

Hopes of significant UK funding allocation for Casement Park

The UK's Chanceller of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves is to set out her spending review in the House of Commons later today. Many are hoping that a significant allocation towards the construction of Casement Park in west Belfast will be included. The stadium, the home of Antrim GAA, has been derelict for over a decade. It is estimated that the project will cost £260 million (€296.9 million), less than half of which is already in place. The Irish Government has pledged around £43 million (€51 million), the Stormont Executive £62.5 million (€74.2 million) and the GAA £15 million (€17.8 million). A shortfall of £140 million remains. It was hoped that the stadium could have been redeveloped for Euro 2028 but this did not come to pass. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said afterwards that he wanted an "alternative proposition". Many, including in the GAA, are quietly hopeful that a significant sum will be provided later today. However, the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves is facing huge spending demands from across Whitehall. Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Hilary Benn, has been among cabinet members pushing for increased funding for his department, including money for Casement Park. However, Mr Benn has previously stated too that the UK government cannot plug the full £140 million gap. The Stormont Executive committed to redeveloping Casement Park in 2011 as part of a strategy to revamp football's Windsor Park and the rugby ground at Ravenhill. While the two other Belfast-based projects went ahead, the redevelopment of Casement was delayed. Intense lobbying efforts have been underway in recent times, with Ulster GAA visiting Westminster last week, to press politicians on the need to include a significant allocation in today's spending review. Last week Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O'Neill also called on the British government to provide substantial funding to help rebuild Casement Park. Taoiseach Micheál Martin stated last September that he would not rule out further money being provided by the Irish Government. The 34,500 capacity stadium has planning permission until July 2026 so it is hoped construction can start before then. This afternoon's Spending Review will be a pivotal moment for the UK government, as it maps out its day-to-day spending and investment plans for much of the remainder of the parliament. Defence, health and infrastructure are likely to be prioritised, in what is otherwise a constrained spending package.

'It's an honour' - Contepomi's Argentina name squad for Lions clash

ARGENTINA HAVE NAMED a 32-man squad ahead of next week's clash with Andy Farrell's British and Irish Lions in Dublin. Head coach Felipe Contepomi, formerly of Leinster, will lead los Pumas onto familiar ground as they take on the Lions at the Aviva Stadium on Friday 20 June [KO 8pm, TG4]. Argentina last faced the Lions back in 2005 in Cardiff when the sides drew 25-25 before Clive Woodward's side departed for their tour of New Zealand. Contepomi has included several first-choice players in his squad for next week's game, including captain Julián Montoya, flankers Pablo Matera and Juan Martín González, centres Lucio Cinti and Matías Moroni, out-half Tomás Albornoz, wing Rodrigo Isgró, and number eight Jaoquín Ovieda – all of whom started the Pumas' most recent Tests against Ireland and France last November. Contepomi has also named lots of less familiar faces, calling on 11 players involved in the Super Rugby Americas competition. Six of those players - Boris Wenger, Pedro Delgado, Leonel Oviedo, Agustín Moyano, and Faustino Sánchez Valarolo – will feature for Dogos XV in the Super Rugby Americas final against Uruguayan side Peñarol on Friday. Advertisement That means the Dogos contingent will arrive in Ireland later than the bulk of Contepomi's squad, who will fly out from Argentina on Friday. Los Pumas had an encouraging 2024 campaign under Contepomi as they won three of their six games in the Rugby Championship before a big win away to Italy, a narrow defeat to Ireland, and a defeat to France in the autumn. Argentina face Steve Borthwick's England in two Tests next month and have a clash with Uruguay before the 2025 Rugby Championship kicks off in August. So they will be looking to get off to a strong start to the year in Dublin next week. 'It's an honour to have received the invitation from the British & Irish Lions to play their farewell match before the tour of Australia, which will be their first ever visit to Ireland,' said Contepomi, who played for and coached Leinster. 'I know how prestigious it is for them to be part of this team, and being invited to this event fills us with pride. 'For us, it's a great challenge to pick up where we left off in 2024 and continue our quest for continuous improvement. Every match is an opportunity to continue growing as a team, and we take it with great responsibility.' Argentina squad to face the Lions: Props: Mayco Vivas, Boris Wenger, Joel Sclavi, Francisco Coria Marchetti, Pedro Delgado Hookers: Julián Montoya, Bautista Bernasconi, Leonel Oviedo Locks: Pedro Rubiolo, Franco Molina, Luciano Asevedo Back rows: Juan Martín González, Benjamín Grondona, Santiago Grondona, Pablo Matera, Joaquín Moro, Joaquín Oviedo Halfbacks: Gonzalo García, Agustín Moyano, Tomás Albornoz, Simón Benítez Cruz, Nicolás Roger Centres: Lucio Cinti, Matías Moroni, Justo Piccardo, Faustino Sánchez Valarolo Back threes: Santiago Carreras, Santiago Cordero, Rodrigo Isgró, Benjamín Elizalde, Ignacio Mendy, Santiago Pernas

'Biggest week of all' for Casement Park as funding announcement imminent

GAA president Jarlath Burns has said this is the 'biggest week of all' for the Casement Park project as he awaits news of British Government funding for the project. The home of Antrim GAA has been shut since 2013 amid numerous hold-ups around planning and funding, with the opportunity to host games in Euro 2028 having now passed. The Stormont Executive has pledged £62.5m (€74m) towards the project, while the Irish Government will stump up £43m (€51m) to go along with the GAA's £15m (€18m) - but that is a long way short of the total required to complete the development with costs having spiralled and British Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to announce what contribution her government is prepared to make towards the shortfall. "This is a big week for it,' said Burns. 'This is the biggest week of all. We keep saying the next few weeks are crucial, but I think tomorrow we're going to hear the spending review. 'As it stands now, I don't know what decision has been made by the British Government as to what they are going to give. And I hope it's generous because it's something that we would really like to see moving on.' There will likely be pressure applied for the GAA to up its contribution but Burns said: "Well, not if the British Government decide that they are going to fund it all. That would be a great situation for us. 'So we don't know what they are going to give. We don't know then what inflationary uplift the Northern Ireland Executive is going to give. That would be between the two government parties. 'But we will then just take it from there. We will then have our own decisions to make, yes. But we are very committed to getting this stadium. 'Clones is wonderful. It's a fantastic stadium, a very quaint stadium. But we all know that for this modern era, we need to have a modern stadium where people can go and they can watch the games in comfort and enjoy it. 'If you look at the Ulster final, for example, you had Armagh, Donegal in the ladies' game, I think it was at 1 o'clock. And our game was maybe at 5 o'clock. "It's a long, long sit for people when you don't have the capacity for food and water runs out and the toileting situation, all of that. So we really just want to modernise and Casement Park is our best opportunity for that.'
