French Customs Intercept Dinosaur Fossils from Morocco in Smuggling Attempt

Morocco World16-02-2025

Rabat – Customs officers in Menton (Alpes-Maritimes) seized nine dinosaur teeth from Morocco in late January.
The fossils were hidden in an express freight truck traveling from Spain to Italy, authorities announced on Friday.
On the A8 motorway, customs agents inspect these trucks daily. They transport hundreds of parcels between private individuals in Spain and Italy, and officers often uncover drugs such as cannabis and cocaine, explained Samantha Verduron, deputy regional director in Nice.
While trained dogs help detect narcotics, officers also open parcels at random. On January 27, they found nine large teeth inside two packages bound for recipients near Genoa and Milan.
An expert from the Museum of Regional Prehistory in Menton identified the fossils as remains of prehistoric reptiles that lived in Morocco between 72 and 66 million years ago.
The seized items included a Zarafasaura oceanis' tooth, a marine reptile with an exceptionally long neck, three Mosasaurus teeth, a predator known from Jurassic World, and five fossilized teeth believed to belong to Dyrosaurus phosphaticus, an ancestor of the crocodile.
French law prohibits the possession, import, or transport of archaeological artifacts without proper documentation.
Investigators are now working to trace the intended recipients and determine the next steps. Such discoveries often lead to the repatriation of artifacts to their country of origin.
France has returned Moroccan fossils in the past. In 2020, authorities handed over 25,000 artifacts, including fossils, minerals, polished stones, and art objects, that customs officers had seized in 2005 and 2006 during operations in Arles and Perpignan.
Many of these items had come from illegal excavations. Tags: dinosaur in MoroccoFossilsFossils in Morocco

Marrakech Police Arrest Interpol-Wanted French-Malian National

According to a statement released by Morocco's General Directorate of National Security ( DGSN ), the suspect is wanted in connection with the execution of a prison sentence for international drug trafficking as part of a criminal gang, as stated in the agency's official X post. The individual was confirmed to be under the international warrant through an Interpol database check, which revealed he is also wanted for money laundering in addition to criminal drug activities. Following his arrest, the suspect was placed under pre-extradition detention. French judicial authorities have been formally notified and are expected to send an official request from Paris to proceed. This is a continuing part of Morocco's strong presence contributing to Interpol's work in global security. Interpol President Ahmed Naser Al Raisi has previously lauded the country's efforts, describing their active involvement in more than a dozen Interpol-led projects as 'exceptional.' Morocco has established itself as a key security partner on the international stage, regularly offering intelligence support to assist foreign authorities in tracking and apprehending wanted individuals. Spain faces terror threat from Sahrawis linked to Tindouf camps

Sahrawis from the Tindouf camps involved in terrorist groups operating in the Sahel pose a serious threat to Spain, a country many of them know well. «According to intelligence sources, around a dozen Sahrawis born in the Tindouf camps (Algeria) took part in the ' Holidays in Peace ' program, which allows children to spend summers in Spain, away from the harsh conditions of the desert and refugee camps. This is why they speak fluent Spanish», reported La Vanguardia on Sunday, June 8. Intelligence services have also raised concerns about the growing presence of Polisario-linked individuals in leadership roles within terrorist organizations in the Sahel, such as the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM) and the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO). These warnings come just three days after Spanish authorities arrested two Sahrawis from the Tindouf camps on suspicion of terrorist activity in Spain. Before being killed by French forces in Mali in 2021, Adnane Abou Walid al-Sahraoui recruited dozens of youths from the Tindouf camps into his group, the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara. Among them was Abou Houzeifa, also known as Hugo, who was killed by the Malian army in April 2024. The La Vanguardia article has sparked outrage among Polisario supporters in Spain. «We express our deep concern and condemnation over the publication of articles on Sunday, June 8, by Enric Juliana and Joaquín Vera, which—under the guise of geopolitical analysis—uncritically echo the official Moroccan narrative and a discourse of fear, effectively criminalizing the Sahrawi cause», wrote a Polisario-affiliated media outlet.

French Justice Minister praises Morocco for arrest in crypto-kidnapping case

French Minister of Justice Gérald Darmanin expressed his gratitude to Morocco on Wednesday and praised the excellent judicial cooperation between the two countries, following the arrest of the alleged mastermind behind a series of recent crypto-related kidnappings in France. «I sincerely thank Morocco for this arrest, which demonstrates the excellent judicial cooperation between our two countries, particularly in the fight against organized crime», the French minister wrote on his official X account. The arrest was the result of a joint security operation carried out by Morocco's National Brigade of Judicial Police (BNPJ), in coordination with the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST). The operation led to the apprehension of a French-Moroccan national suspected of involvement in kidnappings for extortion and ransom targeting cryptocurrency users, as well as in money laundering activities linked to an international organized crime network operating in France. The 25-year-old suspect was arrested in the city of Tangier as part of international security cooperation, shortly after Moroccan authorities received a formal request from their French counterparts outlining the criminal offenses allegedly committed on French territory, according to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
