How to Research and Plan a Vacation, Right on Your Phone
Google Maps celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, but like Apple's Maps (released in 2012), it has moved far beyond basic navigation services and into travel planning. Both provide tools to bookmark your favorite places, read reviews, make reservations and see the points of interest around you.
Here's a guide to some useful tools for travelers.
Know Your Place(s)
When you search for and select a business in the app, both Google Maps (for Android and iOS) and Apple's Maps (for iOS) display a 'place card' with the address, hours, reviews and other details about that location.
In Google Maps, tap the Explore tab at the bottom of the screen to see nearby places. On some restaurant cards, you can make reservations using the OpenTable booking service. Google usually includes an immersive Street View 360-degree photo of the area.
Apple's cards, where you can save and add your own notes, include buttons for the establishment's phone number, its website and other information. Tap the Search box and choose Find Nearby to see places around you. Apple's 360-degree view feature is called Look Around; tap the photo thumbnail on the map to open it.
To bookmark a place for later reference, tap the Save or + button on the card. Saved places are stored in the Google Maps Lists area (which includes a default Travel Plans section) on the You tab, or in Apple's Maps Library, linked on the app's Search screen.

International players tee off in crazy golf trophy
An estimated 250 players will compete in the individual World Crazy Golf Championships on Saturday and Sunday. The annual tournament, held at Hastings Adventure Golf in East Sussex, will see entrants from at least seven countries, including the USA and New Zealand, compete. He added: "It was so exciting to have that moment. I just love windmills." Rainey Statum, who travelled to the tournament from Texas, USA, told the BBC he faced a long journey to make it to the tournament, flying to London via Chicago. Advertisement He said: "Because I don't do trains down in Texas I kinda got lost and it took five hours for me to get here to Hastings through the train and subway system. Jordan Chiles 'finally' feels good about her skin
Jordan Chiles has taken 22 years to "embrace" her complexion. The 24-year-old gymnast has suffered from acne in the past but she feels a lot more positive about her skin these days. She told Refinery29: 'I have [acne] scars here and there, but now I'm finally at a point where I'm positive with myself and my skin. 'Literally, it took me 22 years to finally be like, look, Jordan, you're a gorgeous girl. You have beautiful skin. Embrace that.' The Olympian tries to keep her routine simple when it comes to looking after her sensitive skin. She said: 'A majority of the time, I only use a good cleanser, an exfoliator, and then a nice, silky moisturiser. 'I keep it very simple, but make sure everything is hydrated and my skin looks good and glowy.' Jordan is the new face of Hero Cosmetics and she's a huge fan of their Mighty Patch hydrocolloid stickers. She said: 'People always ask me, 'What do you do for your skincare?' So I was really happy Hero wanted me to be one of their ambassadors. Whether it's dark spots or a pimple that's coming up and I want it gone, I've always loved Mighty Patch... "I have Mighty Patches in every bag, my car, my room, and probably in five different bathrooms." Asked her favourites, she replied: 'Literally all of them, but since I go to practice a lot, [I love] the invisible ones and the dark spot ones with the prickly points.' Sections of SR-56 to close due to maintenance
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Maintenance work will impact westbound State Route 56 next week. Sections of westbound SR-56 from Carmel Country Road to Carmel Creek Road are set to close Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Crews will install overhead sign structures spanning all lanes of travel, according to Caltrans. All westbound SR-56 motorists will exit Carmel Creek Road to Valley Center Drive, turn left on El Camino Real and turn right on Carmel Valley Road to northbound and southbound I-5 ramps on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday night. New street maintenance effort launched for area around Petco Park On Wednesday night, all westbound SR-56 motorists will exit Carmel Country Road, turn right on Carmel Country Road and turn left on Carmel Creek Road to the westbound SR-56 on-ramp. Caltrans is advising residents and businesses in the area to expect increased traffic on the detour note, construction noise and lights. Detour signage will be posted around the closures.
