Midfielder's stunner shortlisted for goal of the month
WILL Vaulks has been nominated for the Sky Bet Championship goal of the month for January.
The Oxford United midfielder gave the U's the lead with his first goal for the club just before half-time at Plymouth Argyle.
Jordan Thorniley directed a long pass down the left channel for Greg Leigh, who nodded the ball into the path of Mark Harris, who turned and teed up Vaulks to hit a wonderful, rising effort first-time from 25 yards out.
The Pilgrims would go on to find a leveller via Rami Al Hajj less than 20 minutes into the second half.
Also shortlisted for the goal of the month award are Zian Flemming (Burnley), Amankwah Forson (Norwich City) and Josh Windass (Sheffield Wednesday).
Fans can vote for Vaulks via the Football League website before 5pm on Monday. Votes will be combined with the choices from a panel. The winner will be announced on February 14.

Boxers deliver standout performances across three days of action
TWO boxers from Blackbird Leys ABC delivered standout performances across three thrilling days of action at the Ed Bilbey Box Cup in Grantham. Senior middleweight Jamal Franklin, 19, and youth welterweight Yousef Elmgraif, 17, represented the Oxford club. In the quarter-finals, Franklin was drawn against the highly-rated Tommy Naismith from York. Over three intense rounds, Franklin displayed sharp technical ability, adapting to his opponent's style and forcing a standing count in the final round. Franklin's dominance was reflected in a unanimous decision victory, setting the tone for a strong weekend. READ ALSO: Great and good pay tribute to former U's youth chief Elmgraif began his campaign against Nauman Ilyas of Solihull. Using his range and dynamic level changes, he overwhelmed his opponent, delivering three standing counts and forced a stoppage in the third round. Day two brought fresh challenges. Franklin faced local veteran Nathan Wallace (34) from Grantham ABC in the semi-finals. Despite Wallace's cut from the previous day reopening early in the bout, Franklin controlled much of the action, effectively evading wild charges while landing cleaner shots. In a result that surprised both corners, the bout was awarded to Wallace on a split decision. Elmgraif's semi-final saw him matched against Hayden Lloyd of Touch Gloves Grantham. Lloyd's style was no match for Elmgraif's relentless pressure and composed aggression, and earned another unanimous decision to book his place in the final. On finals day, Elmgraif faced Aidan Perry of White Rose Boxing Club for the Youth Class B under-67kg title. Undeterred by Perry's height advantage, Elmgraif worked both head and body with relentless forward pressure, again securing a unanimous decision and taking home the gold medal.

Three goals in three games as progress made with World Cup hopes
OLE Romeny scored the only goal of the game as Indonesia made progress with their hopes of 2026 World Cup qualification with victory at home against China. The Oxford United forward, who joined the U's for a record fee from FC Utrecht in January, netted the crucial winner from the penalty spot at the end of the first half. In doing so, Romeny made it three goals in three matches for Indonesia, having made his international debut in March. Romeny played 89 minutes against China before being withdrawn late on, as Ramadhan Sanata took his place. READ ALSO: Bristol Rovers expert gives verdict on loan of U's striker Australia's 1-0 win at the death at home against Japan earlier in the evening ensured Indonesia were no longer able to secure direct qualification, but they have still booked a fourth round qualification berth. Asia has been allocated eight direct spots to next year's World Cup, and another potential berth via the play-offs. In the third round of qualifying, 18 countries are divided into three groups of six. The group winners and runners-up qualify for the World Cup automatically, while the third and fourth-placed nations make it to the next round of qualifying. Indonesia are fourth in Group C, six points clear of Bahrain and China, with just one match left to play, and travel to group winners Japan for their final game on Tuesday.

Australia on brink of World Cup as Indonesia end China hopes
Coach Tony Popovic said "we've done something special" after his Australia side moved to the brink of next year's World Cup on Thursday while Indonesia ended China's qualifying hopes. Defender Aziz Behich was the home hero in front of over 57,000 in Perth, rifling into the corner in the 90th minute to give Australia a 1-0 win over already qualified Japan. Advertisement The crucial victory cemented the Socceroos' second place in Group C behind Japan with one game to play, with the top two finishers going straight to the World Cup in North America next year. Saudi Arabia play at Bahrain later Thursday knowing they must win or Australia are through. "We know there's room to grow and room to improve, but we've done something special tonight," said Popovic, who saw his team outplayed for long periods by an experimental Japan side. If the Saudis win in Bahrain, the battle for second will go down to the wire next Tuesday, when Australia travel to Jeddah. Advertisement The Socceroos will be very much in pole position to qualify because of their far superior goal difference. "We've all played a part in getting us to this point," added Popovic, who replaced Graham Arnold in September. "We want to go to Saudi Arabia and really finish the job off." Teams finishing third and fourth in the three Asian groups go into a further round of qualifying. Also in Group C, Patrick Kluivert's Indonesia kept their hopes alive of reaching a first World Cup since the country's independence in 1945 with a 1-0 win over China. That left Indonesia third in the group with a game to play and the victory was celebrated wildly at the end. Advertisement Ole Romeny scored the only goal, his controversial penalty just before half time following a VAR check leaving China rooted to the bottom of the group. A sell-out crowd of 76,000 at the Gelora Bung Karno stadium was sent into raptures after the Oxford United striker tucked away his spot-kick. The 45th-minute goal proved to be the winner after a VAR review when Ricky Kambuaya went down under minimal contact. President Xi Jinping once said he wanted China to win the World Cup, but this defeat means they have still only been to the tournament once, in 2002. China have won just two of their nine games in this round of Asian qualifying, losing seven. Advertisement In contrast, Japan and Iran have already reached next year's showpiece in the United States, Canada and Mexico. South Korea are guaranteed to join them on Thursday if they avoid defeat against Iraq in Basra. Even if they lose, Son Heung-min's side will have another opportunity at home to Kuwait next week in Group B. In Group A, Uzbekistan are on the cusp of their first World Cup. Avoid a loss to third-placed United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi and the Central Asian country will make history. pst/iwd
