The PAOCC, led by its chairman Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, meets with representatives from the Korean consulate and the Korean community in the Philippines on May 16, 2025 to address the rising crimes against Korean nationals. PCO
The Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission on Friday assured the Korean community in the country that the government will remain steadfast in eradicating violent crimes.
PAOCC chairperson Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin gave this assurance in a dialogue regarding rising violent crime rates, with representatives from the Korean consulate and the United Korean Community Association in the Philippines, according to a press release from the Presidential Communications Office issued Saturday.
PAOCC Executive Director Cruz presented to them a plan to safeguard Korean nationals residing in or visiting the country.
Included in the plan is the revitalization of tourist security desks which will provide police visibility and enhance coordination with local authorities in safeguarding foreign nationals.
Authorities will also have an intensified monitoring of key areas such as Angeles City, Manila, and Cebu.
The high-level dialogue was also attended by Ambassador Marciano A. Paynor Jr. (Ret.) of the Office of the President, and Undersecretary Jeffrey G. Gallardo.
During the dialogue, Sand Seung-Man, deputy chief mission and consul general of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, asked for strong reinforcement from the Philippine government in enhancing the safety of Korean communities, amid crimes targeting Korean nationals, both residents and visitors alike.
Sand suggested having an international police cooperation and intelligence gathering framework to ensure effective investigation.
This came weeks after a Korean national was killed along Friendship Highway in Korea Town, Angeles City.
The victim and his friend were standing in front of a bank when the riding-in-tandem suspects accosted them.
One of the suspects forcibly took the bag of the victim that contained P5,000 and other valuables.
The two victims were about to recover the bag when one of the suspects shot one of them in the chest before fleeing with his accomplice on their motorcycle.
The victim was brought to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Some persons of interest (POIs) have been identified in the fatal shooting, according to the city police on Thursday.
At a press briefing, Angeles City Police head Police Colonel Joselito Villarosa Jr. said the POIs were identified through a review of CCTV footage and other evidence.
To help in the probe, the Korean Association Community of Angeles City has offered a P200,000 reward for any information that will lead to the identification and arrest of the perpetrator.
The public are encouraged to immediately report any leads to the Angeles City Police. —KG, GMA Integrated News

LTO: Motorcycles most of 18k unregistered vehicles apprehended in May 2025

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) said Tuesday it apprehended 18,934 unregistered motor vehicle, most of which are motorcycles, for the month of May. According to a statement, the majority were motorcycles with 12,206. There were 3,105 tricycles, at least 1,800 vans, and over 1,000 private vehicles. The remainder is divided between passenger jeepneys, buses and trucks. LTO data revealed that most of the apprehensions occurred in the jurisdiction of LTO- Region 4A with 9,906 apprehensions. This area covers the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon. 'Our campaign will remain aggressive until such time that we compel these motor vehicles to comply with their obligation to have their motor vehicles registered because it is through registration that motor vehicles are checked for road worthiness… This is not only part of your obligation as motor vehicle owners, it is part of your responsibility not only for your safety but also of your family,' said LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor Mendoza II. The LTO official urged motor vehicle owners to register their cars to avoid hefty fines, adding that driving an unregistered motor vehicle has a P10,000 fine. The agency's campaign against unregistered vehicles is being conducted by the LTO with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and other law enforcement agencies. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/RF, GMA Integrated News

South Korea votes for new president after martial law turmoil

A woman votes at a polling station during the presidential election in Seoul, South Korea, June 3, 2025. REUTERS/Go Nakamura South Koreans began voting Tuesday for a new president, six months to the day after ex-leader Yoon Suk Yeol plunged the country into political chaos with his disastrous declaration of martial law. A handful of elderly voters lined up at a polling station in Seoul's Munrae-dong area at 6 am (2100 GMT) to cast their ballots when voting began. "We were the first to arrive with the hope our candidate gets elected, and because the presidential election is the most important," Yu Bun-dol, 80, told AFP, adding she was voting for the conservative People Power Party (PPP) -- Yoon's former party. Millions have already cast their ballots in the snap election, with more than a third of registered voters doing so last week during two days of early voting, the National Election Commission said. All major polls have put liberal Lee Jae-myung well ahead, with the latest Gallup survey showing 49 percent of respondents viewed him as the best candidate. Campaigning is not allowed on election day, but Lee posted on Facebook that the vote would "show the strength of the Korean people," after months of turmoil. Kim Moon-soo, from the conservative PPP, has trailed Lee in the polls, on 35 percent in the Gallup survey. The fallout from martial law declaration, which has left South Korea effectively leaderless for the first months of US President Donald Trump's second term, is the top concern for voters, experts said. "Polls show the election is largely viewed as a referendum on the previous administration," Kang Joo-hyun, a political science professor at Sookmyung Women's University, told AFP. "The martial law and impeachment crisis not only swayed moderates but also fractured the conservative base." Yoon's impeachment over the martial law bid, which saw armed soldiers deployed to parliament, made him the second straight conservative president to be stripped of office after Park Geun-hye in 2017. Conservative candidate Kim also failed to convince a third party candidate, Lee Jun-seok of the Reform Party, to unify and avoid splitting the right-wing vote. Voter Park dong-shin, 79, said Yoon's martial law declaration "was the kind of thing done during the old days of dictatorship in our country." He said he was voting for the candidate who would make sure those responsible were "properly dealt with." 'Turning point' Seoul's streets were peaceful as people made the most of good weather and a public holiday, but police issued the highest level of alert and deployed thousands of officers to ensure the poll proceeded smoothly. South Korean presidents serve a single five-year term. Lee's Democratic Party already holds a parliamentary majority and analysts say the fractured conservative base will struggle in opposition unless it can resolve its issues. "Conservative politics was associated with competent governance, but it's now hard to argue that they remain capable," said Kang Won-taek, a political science professor at Seoul National University. With a regular presidential election, there is a months-long transition period, and the new leader's term begins at midnight after the predecessor's final day. But in a snap election, the winner becomes president as soon as the National Election Commission ratifies the vote tally. After months of turmoil and a revolving door of lame-duck acting leaders, many South Koreans are eager for the country to move forward. Cab driver Choi Sung-wook, 68, said he was voting for liberal Lee, partly due to his impoverished childhood, which he believed "will have a big influence on how he will serve the people". "I thought Yoon would do well, but he betrayed the people. I hope the next president will create an atmosphere of peace and unity rather than ideological warfare." Overall voter turnout is expected to be high. "The focus won't be on whether Lee will win, but on whether he will secure more than 50 percent of the vote," said Bae Kang-hoon, co-founder of political think tank Valid. "If he manages to do so, it would give him a significant boost in momentum to govern as president." — Agence France-Presse

Marcos hails PH-EU security, defense dialogue

President Marcos with High Representative and Vice President of the Europe Kaja Kallas (Photo from PCO) President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the establishment of the Philippines-European Union (EU) Security and Defense Dialogue highlights the importance of addressing geopolitical challenges with nations that share similar values and adhere to a rules-based international order. Marcos conveyed his appreciation to High Representative and Vice President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas for the EU's "continued and steadfast support" for the Philippines during a courtesy call in Malacañang on Monday. Kallas is currently in Manila for a two-day official visit. This was her visit to the country since her appointment on December 1, 2024. Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo, who also met with Kallas, said the high-level dialogue reaffirms the strong and growing ties between the Philippines and EU. The inaugural meeting of a Dialogue is tentatively set to take place in the last quarter of 2025. "The visit marks a significant milestone in the longstanding partnership between the Philippines and the EU, rooted in shared values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, anchored in the Philippines-EU Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, as well as the EU Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific," said a joint press release on the meeting between Manalo and Kallas. According to the release, the establishment of a Security and Defense Dialogue recognizes the "growing complexity of security threats." 'The dialogue addresses the current geopolitical challenges and will foster exchanges and cooperation in security and defense areas, including maritime security, cybersecurity, hybrid threats, foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI),' said Kallas. Both the Philippines and EU recognize the benefit of continued cooperation under initiatives such as Critical Maritime Routes Indo-Pacific , Copernicus, and Enhancing security cooperation in and with Asia. They also expressed their willingness to further explore joint activities and new opportunities for cooperation in line with shared strategic interests, including opportunities on connectivity and environmental monitoring, such as exchange of knowledge and best practices on submarine cables and uncrewed vessels. They reaffirmed their commitment to respect freedom of navigation and overflight as provided for in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. "They express their concerns about China's illegal, coercive, aggressive and deceptive measures against Philippine vessels and aircraft conducting lawful maritime operations in the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea. They reiterate their commitment to upholding international law, particularly UNCLOS and the 2016 South China Sea Arbitration Award, which is final and binding," the statement said.—LDF, GMA Integrated News
