Storm Center AM Update: Smoky Skies Again; Watching Monday

Yahoo2 days ago

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — Smoky skies will fill several portions of KELOLAND today, with air quality concerns in place due to Canadian wildfire smoke riding along the jet stream and moving through the area.
Unfortunately, more smoke will be lingering as we head through the day and into the night for that matter. Air quality alerts, as a result, will remain in place through the day and night in South Dakota, Minnesota, and portions of Iowa. Please limit strenuous outdoor activities today…especially if you're prone to respiratory problems.
The good news is that we get a frontal boundary to come along by Monday to help sweep this smoke out of the region…so air quality is expected to improve as we head beyond the Monday outlook. The bad news is that we'll have to contend with showers and thunderstorms…especially in the second half of the day. Some of those storms may become strong to severe.
A 'Slight Risk' for severe weather is in place for most of eastern and southeastern South Dakota, the Marshall area in Minnesota, and northeastern Nebraska. A 'Marginal Risk' surrounds that for areas around Winner, Redfield, Worthington, and Rock Valley. Damaging gusts and large hail are the main concerns, though there's always a non-zero isolated tornado risk. Please stay weather aware.
Showers and a storm or two may linger through the first half of the day on Tuesday to the east and southeast, but the overall trend is one of improvement through the day and into parts of Wednesday if you're East River. To the west, we'll have some showers redevelop on Wednesday.
Daily chances for showers and a storm or two will return by Thursday and stick around through the first half of the weekend. While no day is a total wash-out, you'll want to watch and see if you need to bring an umbrella where you go.
All the while, temperatures will be much closer to average as we head through the second half of the week and into next weekend.
Here's a look at your extended forecast:

Jay Mitchell to run for Alabama attorney general

Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell announced Monday that he is running for state attorney general. 'This isn't just my race — it's our fight for Alabama's future. I'll take on the radical left, advance the Trump agenda, and never stop fighting for our state,' Mitchell said. Mitchell resigned from the Supreme Court last month. The attorney general serves as the state's top law enforcement officer. Brighton City Councilman Jerome McMullin charged with releasing video of double homicide during active investigation Mitchell said in a statement announcing his campaign that he will focus on combating violent crime, enforcing immigration laws and supporting law enforcement. He also promised 'to protect the unborn' and fight what he called the 'woke agenda.' 'No boys in girls' sports. No DEI. No more woke nonsense,' Mitchell said in a statement. During his time on the bench, Mitchell is best known for writing a Supreme Court ruling saying frozen embryos are considered children under the state's Wrongful Death of Minor Act. The ruling allowed several couples to pursue wrongful death lawsuits after their frozen embryos were destroyed in a 2020 accident at a south Alabama storage facility. The ruling temporarily upended IVF services and drew national attention as clinics became concerned about civil liability. Mitchell did not directly mention the frozen embryo ruling in his campaign announcement. Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey is also running for the office. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall cannot seek another term because of term limits. Marshall is running for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor instead of seeking another term in the Senate. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Dating apps tied to U.S. citizens kidnapped in Mexico, officials warn

Officials at the United States Embassy and its consulates in Mexico have confirmed several reports of Americans being kidnapped by individuals they met on a dating app, federal officials announced. In a security alert issued June 2, authorities at the U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara issued a warning about the incidents, all occurring in recent months in the areas of Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Nayarit. 'Victims and their families in the United States have at times been extorted for large sums of money to secure their release,' officials said. 'Please be aware that this type of violence is not limited to one geographic area. Travelers should use caution when meeting strangers.' While officials did not name any of the specific dating apps, they provided the following tips for safer travel: Be cautious if using dating apps in Mexico Meet only in public places and avoid isolated locations where crimes are most likely to occur Tell friends or family members where you are going, details of the person you're meeting and what app was used to meet them If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and remove yourself from the situation In case of emergency call 911 on any telephone to reach local authorities Authorities at the U.S. Consulate General also encouraged travelers to stay abreast of the U.S. State Department's travel advisories for Mexico.
