Toronto suffered another early playoff exit, so the team could be forced to make some drastic moves. But the Maple Leafs are still planning on going after a Stanley Cup, putting even more pressure on building a more well-rounded team.
The free agent class this year has a few solid options that Toronto should consider. And the Maple Leafs should look no further than to the team that knocked them out of the postseason, the Florida Panthers.
Florida has multiple quality players hitting free agency as well, and the Maple Leafs could benefit from this. One name that could be intriguing is veteran center Sam Bennett, who could help bolster the Toronto offense.
NHL writer Joe Yerdon of Bleacher Report linked the two together, listing Toronto as a possible landing spot.

"History and money have a way of working out sometimes, but if the Leafs added Bennett while also losing Marner, the way Toronto plays and responds to teams will change drastically. Bennett addresses a desperate need in the Leafs lineup and they may have a lot of money at their disposal to make an offer. If Bennett doesn't re-sign with Florida ahead of July 1, Toronto will push hard for his services," Yerdon wrote.

Toronto could benefit greatly from the playoff success that Bennett has seen over his career. The veteran has helped Florida reach three straight Stanley Cup Finals, and he has produced in each run.
This postseason, Bennett has scored 15 goals and seven assists for the Panthers. And while Bennett is likely to stay with the Panthers, free agency always has some strange twists and turns.

The Maple Leafs would make a lot of sense for him if things with the Panthers fell apart.

Diamondbacks OF Carroll exits game at Toronto after being hit on left hand by pitch
TORONTO (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll exited Wednesday's 8-1 loss at Toronto in the eighth inning after he was hit on his left hand by a pitch. Manager Torey Lovullo said X-rays did not reveal a fracture. Carroll stayed in to run the bases after being hit by a 91 mph sinker from rookie left-hander Justin Bruihl. But he was replaced before the bottom half of the eighth. Alek Thomas took Carroll's spot in the lineup, with Tim Tawa moving from center field to right. Lovullo said Carroll was hit on the fleshy part of the hand below his pinkie, resulting in a contusion. 'It's a very dangerous spot when you're talking about that bone on the pinkie side,' Lovullo said. 'It got a lot of meat, so we're grateful for that.' Carroll's status for Thursday's series finale was unclear. 'I wouldn't be surprised if he tells me he wants to play tomorrow,' Lovullo said. 'We're going to keep an open mind, we're going to continue to evaluate him tonight through the night and into the morning and see how he feels.' Carroll tripled and scored Arizona's only run. The 2023 NL Rookie of the Year is batting .255 with 20 homers and 44 RBIs. Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno was unavailable for a second consecutive game because of a sore right hand. A former Blue Jays prospect, Moreno was scratched from the lineup Tuesday after injuring his hand during batting practice. 'We'll continue to push on day to day with him,' Lovullo said. Wednesday's loss was Arizona's third straight after winning the previous five. 'These are frustrating times,' Lovullo said. ___ AP MLB:

Tage Thompson Reflects On Teammates Lack Of Response After Noesen Hit One of the many low points of the Buffalo Sabres 2024-25 season was the lack of response to the hit on leading scorer Tage Thompson by New Jersey forward Stefan Noesen. Thompson was laid out by Noesen early in the third period of the Sabres 4-3 win over the Devils on February 2nd. Noesen was given a match penalty and game misconduct, but none of the players on the ice at the time of the hit or in the subsequent remaining 15 minutes responded to the hit, something that Thompson reflected on with reporter Andy Strickland. 2:20 Now Playing Paused Ad Playing

Blackhawks re-sign Ryan Donato to $16 million, 4-year contract
Ryan Donato wanted to stay, and the Chicago Blackhawks wanted to keep the hard-charging forward. It took a while, but they figured it out. The Blackhawks announced Wednesday that they had re-signed Donato to a $16 million, four-year contract. He was eligible for unrestricted free agency before agreeing to his new deal with his fifth NHL team. "Ryan brings energy and competes hard every game which has been a huge asset to our team over the last two seasons," Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said in a statement. "He's been a crucial part of our offense, and we're excited for Ryan to continue to make a difference in our lineup for the next four years." The 29-year-old Donato is coming off a breakout performance. He set career highs with 31 goals and 31 assists in 80 games this season. His previous career bests were 16 goals in 2021-22 with Seattle and 18 assists in his first season with Chicago. Donato's camp had conversations with the team about a new contract ahead of the trade deadline, but the sides weren't able to finish the job. The Blackhawks ended up holding onto Donato through the deadline. "We did have a rapid discussion around then, and it didn't get done, but I wouldn't say there's a hurdle or anything like that," Davidson said during the team's end-of-season availability with reporters in April. "Once you get past the deadline, everyone takes a little breather, and then you're near the end of the season. I think things will pick up now that we're through the year." Donato's contract answers one major question for Chicago as it tries to move back into contention after years of losing. The Blackhawks went 25-46-11 this past season, finishing last in the Central Division and No. 31 overall in the NHL. Donato, a Boston native and Harvard University product, has 108 goals and 119 assists in 483 career games, also playing for the Bruins, Wild and Sharks. He joined the Blackhawks when he signed a $4 million, two-year contract with the team in 2023. "We have obviously a super bright future here, and there's going to be guys that make tremendous gains this summer that help the team, you know, win more games," Donato said in April. "And I think Blackhawks fans and a lot of people are going to be surprised how quickly things can turn."
