Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu to team up in revamped US Open mixed doubles
NEW YORK - Nine of the world's top-10 men and nine of the top-10 women have officially entered into the US Open's revamped mixed doubles event, tournament organisers said on June 17, with former singles champions Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu teaming up.
The competition, which will take place a week before the singles main draw during its 'Fan Week', will award US$1 million (S$1.2 million) in prize money to the winning team.
Sixteen teams have entered and the entry window closes on July 28, after which the top eight teams with the best combined singles ranking will be in the draw via direct acceptance, with eight more wildcard entries.
'In our initial discussions about reimagining and elevating the US Open mixed doubles championship, we wanted to find a way to showcase the world's best men and women competing with and against one another,' USTA chief executive officer Lew Sherr said.
'We were confident that we would be able to get the top players in the game excited about this unique opportunity. Seeing the teams that have already put their names on the entry list makes us all incredibly excited.
'It shows that the players are behind what we are trying to do, and we know that the fans will love it.'
Other pairs include twice US Open champion Naomi Osaka teaming up with Nick Kyrgios, as well as Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The matches will be best of three sets, with short sets to four games, no-ad scoring, tiebreakers at four-all and a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of a third set. The final will be a best-of-three set match to six games.
Although a number of big names such as Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka have entered, the format came in for criticism from renowned doubles players.
Reigning champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori said the new format was a 'profound injustice' that disrespects doubles players, describing the new event as a 'pseudo-exhibition focused only on entertainment and show'.
The US Open had said the changes were made following the success of the 'Mixed Madness' exhibition event held ahead of 2024's tournament, which paired up a number of high-profile singles players into teams.
'Making decisions just following the logic of profit is profoundly wrong in some situations,' Italians Errani and Vavassori had said.
The pair have entered the competition this year.

Mbappe doubtful for Real Madrid's Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - LaLiga - Real Madrid v Real Sociedad - Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain - May 24, 2025 Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe during the warm up before the match REUTERS/Isabel Infantes/File Photo Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe is a doubt for their opening Club World Cup match against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal on Wednesday, after missing training on Tuesday due to illness. Club sources told Reuters that Mbappe woke up with a high fever. While he has not been officially ruled out, the source said his availability for the clash at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium was in 'more than reasonable doubt'. The potential absence of Mbappe leaves newly-appointed Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso facing a selection dilemma, as the Frenchman is currently the only recognised centre forward in the squad. Brazilian teenager Endrick, who could have provided an alternative, was left out of the travelling party following a leg muscle injury sustained during Real's LaLiga fixture at Sevilla last month. Mbappe has been instrumental for Real Madrid this season, scoring 31 LaLiga goals since his high-profile summer move from Paris St Germain. Real Madrid enter the tournament as one of the favourites, having dominated European football over the last decade, winning five of the last 10 Champions League titles. Al-Hilal secured their place in the competition by triumphing in the AFC Champions League in 2021 and will look to capitalise on any weakness in Madrid's lineup. Fluminense were firmly in control against the Bundesliga side in the first half but Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel produced a handful of superb saves to frustrate the Brazilian team in front of a crowd mostly in their favour. After Dortmund struggled to get a foothold in the match with no shots on goal in the first half, Kobel did his part with a remarkable double-save midway through the second half and frantic late efforts from both sides went unrewarded. Flag-waving Fluminense fans arrived early and cheered wildly as their team applied early pressure, with winger Jhon Arias's shot towards the top corner saved by Kobel in the 17th minute. Fluminense midfielder Martinelli missed by inches in the 34th minute and Kobel saved another fine attempt from Arias two minutes later. Kobel kept out Fluminense striker Everaldo's powerful shot from outside the box in the 69th minute and leapt to block a follow-up effort from midfielder Nonato moments later. As scorching heat in the United States prompted concerns about welfare across the tournament, players were treated to overcast skies and mild temperatures in front of a modest crowd of 34,736 in the roughly 82,000 capacity NFL stadium. Dortmund will next play Mamelodi Sundowns in Cincinnati, while Fluminense will return to MetLife to face Ulsan HD on Saturday. Sinner through in Halle to set up clash with former champion Bublik

FILE PHOTO: Jun 8, 2025; Paris, FR; Jannik Sinner of Italy returns a shot during the men's singles final against Carlos Alcaraz of Spain on day 15 at Roland Garros Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images/File Photo REUTERS Sinner through in Halle to set up clash with former champion Bublik Top seed Jannik Sinner beat local hope Yannick Hanfmann 7-5 6-3 to move into the last 16 at the Halle Open on Tuesday as the world number one looks to defend the only grasscourt title he has won in his career. In his first match since the epic Roland Garros final where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in a contest that lasted 5-1/2 hours, Sinner returned to winning ways as he got the better of Hanfmann who is ranked 138 in the world. "I'm very happy. He is a great server and a great baseliner, so breaking him is very difficult on this surface," Sinner said. "I'm very happy how I handled the tough situations mentally. The first set could have gone into a tiebreak and then anything can happen. "First matches are never easy on grass, and also second and third matches. So let's see what's coming in the next round. I think tomorrow I have the day off, which is good, because the body feels different on this surface." Sinner will next face Alexander Bublik, who won the tournament in 2023 and also faced the Italian in the French Open quarter-finals, and the top seed said he can only expect "the unexpected" against the unpredictable Kazakh entertainer. "He's a great player, a great talent. A huge talent, actually, and grass is his favourite surface. He beat me here in Halle, he won (the trophy) here in Halle, so it's for sure a place he loves to play," Sinner added. "I'm trying to stay calm mentally and trying to see what I can reach. He's a great talent, a great server and he can do whatever he wants. It's hopefully going to be a good match." Earlier, Russian fourth seed Andrey Rublev beat Sebastian Ofner 6-3 6-4 to advance but other top seeds Ugo Humbert and Francisco Cerundolo fell. Denis Shapovalov knocked out sixth seed Humbert 6-4 4-6 7-6(4) while American Alex Michelsen beat fifth seed Cerundolo 2-6 7-5 6-4. Shapovalov's Canadian compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime also advanced but not before he was taken the distance by Laslo Djere in a 6-3 6-7(6) 6-1 victory.
