This edition of our Select series comes courtesy of Beirut-based DJ, producer and percussionist Julian Naman, aka JOOL. Inspired by his parents' extensive music collection, he started producing tracks at the early age of 14, merging various sounds, from jazz, hip-hop and ambient, to progressive rock, techno and house. He has performed alongside a slew of prominent international artists, including Dasha Rush, Ion Ludwig and Answer Code Request, traversing prestigious dancefloors at B018, Ballroom Blitz, Paris' Sputnik and Athens' The Place.
Speaking of his Select set, JOOL says, 'This set was born out of the challenging times we face in the region, where stress and uncertainty feel overwhelming. It's a reflection of that journey - an offering of love, a message of unity through sound.'

Shakira Says Immigrants in the U.S. Live in "Constant Fear' Under Trump's Policies

Yara Sameh Shakira is opening up about the 'constant fear' that immigrants face in the United States today amid President Donald Trump's aggressive immigration policies. The Lebanese-Colombian superstar, 48, recently spoke with BBC News about how the U.S. has changed since she moved to Miami as a teenager to expand her music career. 'I was only 19 when I moved to the US, like many other Colombian immigrants who come to this country looking for a better future,' she said, noting she relied on poetry and written works from Leonard Cohen, Walt Whitman and Bob Dylan to learn English and help 'understand how the English language works within songwriting.' Shakira has risen to international fame over the years, scoring multiple Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as her song 'Hips Don't Lie' peaking at No. 1. She has also earned four Grammy Awards, including best Latin pop album for "Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran" at the 2025 Grammys earlier this year. However, this year has also been notably challenging for the Latin community amid Trump's return to the White House, as his administration prioritizes cracking down on alleged immigration violations. Most recently, there have been ongoing protests in Los Angeles against unlawful immigration ICE raids across the country. 'It means living in constant fear,' Shakira said of living in the U.S. today. 'And it's painful to see. Now, more than ever, we have to remain united,' she added. 'Now, more than ever, we have to raise our voices and make it very clear that a country can change its immigration policies, but the treatment of all people must always be humane.' Earlier this year, Shakira also dedicated her Grammy Award 'to all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country,' adding, 'You are loved, you are worth it, and I will always fight with you.' In response to the L.A. protests, Trump deployed California's National Guard to quell the demonstrations. However, California Gov. Gavin Newsom pushed back, formally requesting that the Trump Administration 'Rescind their unlawful deployment of troops in Los Angeles County and return them to my command.' The case is currently making its way through the courts, with the appeals court temporarily blocking a federal judge's order that directed Trump to return control of National Guard troops to the state. The appeals court said it would hold a hearing on Tuesday. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand

Lebanese Restaurant Babel is Heading to the North Coast

Some days in Sahel are for dancing barefoot on tabletops, others for recalibrating with a fulfilling portion of hummus. Jun 16, 2025 Some Sahel days are for dancing barefoot on tabletops. Others are for recalibrating quietly - sea view in sight, kibbeh in hand. This summer, Babel lands in Marassi, just in time for the seasonal migration of kaftans, cocktails, and questionable decisions. And while your nights might be loud, Babel is firmly on side for the morning after - because let's be honest, you won't be moving before noon. From Dbayeh to Dubai Mall to New Cairo, the Lebanese restaurant has made a name out of high-drama dining. The kind of place that makes you sit up straighter, reconsider your feelings about za'atar, and accept that one portion of Ras Asfour will never be enough. Now, it's gone coastal. The new outpost brings a sea breeze to your sujuk and a shoreline view to your stuffed vine leaves. And while no one's confirmed this yet, the sea bass will probably arrive wearing sunglasses. So whether you're chasing a proper lunch after an improvised night, or salt-dusted and starving post-swim, Babel meets you where you are. Hungry, usually.

Win the Chance to Play The Beatport x SceneNoise Stage at Aegis 2025

This is your chance to showcase your skills at one of the region's most exciting festivals. Jun 16, 2025 Whether you are a rising DJ dreaming of your festival debut or an established selector looking to expand your regional footprint, this is your chance to showcase your skills at one of the region's most exciting festivals. SceneNoise has teamed up with Beatport Live to curate a new stage at Lebanon's Aegis Festival, taking place on the hilltops of Arnaoon Village from July 11th to July 13th, opening the door for four lucky DJs to perform at the festival. Four winners will get to snag a full hour opening set at SceneNoise x Beatport Live stage on July 11th or July 12th, sharing the decks with a roster of brilliant regional selectors. On top of that, the winners will get three-day festival passes for themselves AND a friend (because great moments are better shared), plus bragging rights that'll last way longer than your hangover. To enter the competition, all you have to do is submit your best mix and fill out the form on before June 29th. Your mix could be the soundtrack to someone's festival highlight reel. It could be the set that gets people talking, dancing, and demanding to know "who was that opener?". To be eligible, you must be based in Lebanon or able to travel there. Travel and accommodation is not included. Winners will be announced on July 3rd. May the odds be ever in your favour.
