Ex-aide of Congress leader held in Rajasthan for 'spying', visited Pak 6–7 times
A government employee and former personal assistant to a senior Congress leader was detained on Wednesday for allegedly spying for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).The Rajasthan CID and other intelligence special teams from Jaipur detained the individual, Sakur Khan Mangaliya, from a government department office in Jaisalmer. Khan is a resident of Jaisalmer district, and is currently employed in the state's employment office. Shakoor Khan was on duty in the district administration control room of the during Operation Sindoor.Officials suspect Khan of being involved in suspicious activities. Intelligence agencies had been monitoring him for some time after receiving input about his alleged connections with a Pakistani Embassy official and possible links with the ISI."Based on inputs from higher headquarters about his involvement in suspicious activities, we have detained him for verification and questioning," said Sudhir Chaudhary, Superintendent of Police, confirming the detention.Sakur Khan earlier worked as a personal assistant to Shale Mohammad, a former minister in the Congress government. Mohammad and Khan belong to the same village.Sources said the intelligence team has found multiple unknown Pakistani numbers on Khan's mobile phone. He has reportedly failed to explain the presence of these numbers. During questioning, Khan also admitted to visiting Pakistan 6–7 times in the past.According to officials, no military-related videos or sensitive content have been found on his mobile phone so far. However, many posts on the device were found deleted. His financial records, including two bank accounts, are also being examined by intelligence agencies."There was surveillance on his movements for some time. His links with an officer in the Pakistan Embassy and the possibility of connections with a Pakistani intelligence agency prompted the intelligence team from Jaipur to take action," sources added.Khan is expected to be taken to the Central Investigation Centre in Jaipur for further interrogation.

Pakistan Upgrades Ties With Afghanistan Days After China's Taliban Outreach
New Delhi: Days after a China-convened meeting that pushed for greater Pakistan-Afghanistan ties, Islamabad has made a significant announcement - that it will be sending an Ambassador to Kabul soon. This is the first time since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021 that Islamabad has decided to upgrade its ties with its western neighbour. The announcement was made on Friday by Pakistan's foreign minister Ishaq Dar, who met his Chinese counterpart and the Taliban's acting foreign minister last week in Beijing. Diplomatic ties between Pakistan and Afghanistan are currently at a charge d'affaires-level - a step below that of an Ambassador. Besides last week's ministerial-level meeting organised by Beijing, Pakistan's foreign minister had traveled to Kabul with a Pakistani delegation last month to hold delegation-level talks to further bilateral ties. 'POSITIVE TRAJECTORY' Praising the "positive trajectory" between Islamabad and Kabul ever since last month's delegation-level talks, Mr Dar said it is time to upgrade ties with the Taliban. Announcing the decision to send an Ambassador, he added that "I am confident this step would further contribute towards enhanced engagement and exchanges between two fraternal countries." The Taliban too, has not responded to Islamabad's gesture yet, though it also has its charge d'affaires based in Islamabad. CHINA'S MOVES IN AFGHANISTAN China has made it a priority to settle differences between Pakistan and Afghanistan and push for Beijing's greater influence in south Asia. This could be seen last week. Besides the meeting where all three foreign minister's were present, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held individual closed-door talks with Afghanistan's acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Though China was the first country to accept an Ambassador from the Taliban-run administration in Kabul, Beijing says it officially hasn't formalised ties with Kabul. However, Beijing has swung into action after India's outreach to the Taliban administration on May 15 - when foreign minister S Jaishankar held ministerial-level talks with Kabul for the first time since 2021. Beijing has also announced that after last week's meeting with the Taliban minister, Afghanistan has come on board the so-called "China-Pakistan Economic Corridor" which passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir or PoK. In addition to this, Beijing said that the informal talks it organised between the Pakistani government and the Afghan Taliban administration has led to the two countries to upgrade relations. TRADING CHARGES Ties between Afghanistan and Pakistan have remained strained since December 2024, when nearly 50 people were killed in Afghanistan's Paktika province after Pakistan's air force bombed the region. Islamabad claims that those who launch attacks inside Pakistan use Afghan soil to do so. Kabul rejects this, saying such attacks emanate from within Pakistan, which is plagued with terrorists which are its own creation. Handling terrorism is Pakistan's domestic problem, Kabul has said. Afghanistan's Taliban administration has also expressed concern over the manner in which Pakistan was deporting tens of thousands of refugees. UNOFFICIALLY OFFICIAL No country has formally recognised the Taliban administration since it took control of Afghanistan after the withdrawal of US-led NATO forces. Nationals globally have called for the Taliban to change course on women's rights. Pakistan now becomes the fourth country after China, UAE, and Uzbekistan to designate an Ambassador to Kabul. Although these governments maintain that they have not formally recognised the Taliban, diplomats and experts say that having an Ambassador officially present their credentials represents a major step towards recognition.

Agra: Over three decades after caste violence broke out in Panwari and nearby villages in Agra following controversy over a Dalit wedding procession, a local court on Friday sentenced 32 men to five years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) in the case. Delivering the 97-page verdict, the special SC/ST court of Judge Pushkar Upadhyay also imposed a fine of ₹41,000 on each convict. Half of this amount will be given to the affected Dalit families as compensation. The sentencing came three days after the court convicted 35 men and acquitted 15 others for lack of evidence. Of the original 72 accused, 22 died during the prolonged trial. While 32 convicts were taken into custody on Friday, non-bailable warrants were issued against the remaining three for not appearing in court. The case, titled State vs Vipti Ram and others, relates to the violence that unfolded on June 21–22, 1990. The trigger was a Dalit groom riding a horse during his wedding procession in Panwari, which led to objections from a group of Jat men. An altercation followed, and the next day, both sides exchanged gunfire, resulting in the death of 50-year-old Soni Ram Jat. Several Dalit homes were torched in the aftermath. The violence prompted the heavy deployment of Provincial Armed Constabulary and police forces. A month-long curfew was imposed to bring the situation under control. Then-Congress leader and former PM Rajiv Gandhi, along with Sonia Gandhi, had visited Panwari village after the violence. A case was registered at Kagarol police station by then-SHO Omveer Singh Rana. Charges were framed under IPC sections 148 (rioting with deadly weapons), 149 (unlawful assembly), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 144 (joining unlawful assembly with a weapon), 325 (causing grievous hurt), and sections 3/2/5 of the SC/ST Act. Additional district govt counsel Hemant Dixit said, "At least 200–250 people were present at the spot in Akola. A total of 72 were named in the case, and 31 prosecution witnesses were examined during the trial." During Friday's hearing, the defence side argued for leniency, stating that the convicted men are now aged between 80 and 85, come from agrarian backgrounds, and have no prior criminal record. BJP MLA Chaudhary Babu Lal and seven others were acquitted in 2022 after key witnesses turned hostile and the original case diary went missing. Dixit countered the defence side's arguments, saying, "All the accused were young at the time of the incident. The violence in Akola was so brutal that it led to a mass exodus of Dalit families. Therefore, we demanded maximum punishment." Meanwhile, sources said that the convicts plan to move the Allahabad high court against the verdict. " No proper investigation was done after the incident. Things are peaceful now — the Dalit families who left have returned, built homes, and we live in harmony today," an associate of one of the convicts said.
