Nazi criminals allegedly paid $200M in bribes to Perón government
ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay, May 23 (UPI) -- Recently declassified files suggest that Nazi criminals may have paid $200 million in gold bribes to Argentine authorities to secure refuge in the country after World War II.
The files indicate German submarines transported the gold to Argentina's southern coast, where it was delivered to Eva Duarte, wife of then-President Juan Domingo Perón. The money was reportedly later handled by German bankers Richard von Frente, Ricardo Stauch and Rodolf Freude.
The released material includes 1,850 documents compiled into seven files dating from 1950 to 1980. The records confirm that Third Reich fugitives arrived in Argentina beginning in 1945 with the protection of Perón, and that their arrival was not isolated but part of a larger effort.
Nazi ideology had gained notable support in Argentina as early as the 1930s. On April 10, 1938, nearly 10,000 people attended a rally organized by the German embassy at Luna Park stadium in Buenos Aires.
Perón was reportedly an admirer of fascist aspects of Nazi Germany.
"The German government encouraged that sympathy by promising major trade concessions after the war. Argentina was full of Nazi spies. Argentine officers and diplomats held important posts in Axis Europe," said Christopher Minster, a Latin American history and literature expert, in an interview with ThoughtCo.
Among the most prominent Nazis who found refuge in Argentina were Josef Mengele, known as the "Angel of Death," Adolf Eichmann, one of the main architects of the Holocaust and leader of the so-called "Final Solution," and Josef Schwammberger, who commanded the Krakow concentration camp from 1942 to 1944.
Mengele evaded capture for years, living under a false identity in Argentina and Paraguay. He drowned off a Brazilian beach in 1979 and was buried under the name Wolfgang Gerhard.
Eichmann was captured by Mossad in a covert operation and brought to Israel, where he was tried and executed by hanging on June 1, 1962. He had entered Argentina under the alias Ricardo Klement.
Schwammberger was arrested in 1987 and extradited to Germany, where he was sentenced to life in prison.

Two people rescued from small plane crash in Long Island Sound
June 1 (UPI) -- Crews rescued two people aboard a small plane that crashed into Long Island Sound Sunday near a Connecticut airport, according to the FAA and U.S. Coast Guard. The Piper PA-32 plane went down about 10:30 a.m. south of the Tweed New Haven Airport in New Haven, a statement from the FAA said. "The two persons onboard the aircraft were rescued and in stable condition," the Coast Guard said in a statement, according to ABC News. The Coast Guard dispatched a 45-foot New Haven-based rescue boat to the scene after the Sector Long Island Sound Command Center received notification of the incident from the air traffic control tower that the plane had gone down near the Thimble Islands close to Branford, Ct. The rescued passengers were taken to the Stony Creek Pier in Branford, the Coast Guard said. The FAA is investigating the incident.

CUNY Labor School honcho spreads ‘antisemitic' conspiracy and lies about Gaza war: critics
A top CUNY official is spreading 'antisemitic' conspiracy theories and lies that Israel was in on or welcomed Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, massacre as a 'pretext' to take over the Gaza strip, critics fume. Arthur Cheliotes, 76, the board chairman of CUNY's School of Labor and Urban Studies, posted an online thread that compared Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler, too. Cheliotes, who was instrumental in founding the CUNY 'social justice' Labor School, reposted on Facebook a series of conspiracies and falsehoods under the heading, 'What Israel Doesn't Want You to Know,' and accompanied by a picture of Netanyahu and the Israeli Star of David flag. In another post, the CUNY big — who served as president of the Communication Workers of America Local 1180 for 39 years — shows a picture side by side of Hitler and the Nazi flag in the year 1939 with Netanyahu and the Israeli flag in 2023. A CUNY insider who has known Cheliotes for years was stunned by the posts. 'I'm blown away. I'm saddened. These are bogus conspiracy theories that are at odds with the truth,' the source said. Former longtime City University Board of Trustees Jeffrey Wiesenfeld fumed, 'This man is an imbecile and antisemite.' There are legitimate criticisms that Israel's intelligence and security underestimated the threat from Hamas, Wiesenfeld said. The terrorists' Oct. 7, 2023 attack caught Israel defenses off guard, slaughtering 1,200 and triggering the brutal retaliatory war in Gaza. 'The worst thing you can do the martyrdom of 1,200 people who were killed. Of course this is antisemitic,' Wiesenfeld said. Weisenfeld said President Trump and his team fighting antisemitism at Ivy League schools such as Columbia and Harvard should pivot to CUNY 'where there's enough trash to clean up for a long time.' Cheliotes, who was instrumental over 40 years in setting up labor programs at CUNY and creating the the Labor school, defended his postings during a Sunday interview. 'These positions seem reasonable to me,' said Cheliotes, who has chaired the CUNY Labor school's advisory board since its creation. Asked if any of the seven points were conspiratorial or falsehoods, Cheliots, 'I don't know? Are they?' He claimed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin is taking certain actions to extend the Gaza war to avoid prosecution of criminal indictments against him and jail time. 'You create a crisis to stay in power and create a circustmance to harm your people. That's what I think Netanyahu has done,' said Chelioties, doubling down on the conspiracy theory. Cheliotes shot down claims that he's a Jew hater, noting his mother was under Nazi occupation in Greece. In another frightening incident last year, anti-Israel criminals caused at least $3 million in damage and the need for costly extra security at taxpayer-funded City College's campus in Upper Manhattan during a violent protest there last year. Still, reports of campus antisemitism are of such concern that Gov. Kathy Hochul ordered a review of Jew-hatred at CUNY campuses in 2023. The analysis — released last September and overseen by former state chief judge Jonathan Lippman –concluded that CUNY needed a top-to-bottom overhaul to combat 'alarming'' antisemitism fanned by its own faculty and do-nothing higher-ups.

Several injured in 'targeted terror attack' near Colorado mall
June 1 (UPI) -- Several people were injured in a mall shooting that police are calling a "target terror attack" in Boulder, Co. Sunday, FBI Director Kash Patel said. A suspect is in custody. "Our agents and local law enforcement are on the scene already, and we will share updates as more information becomes available, Patel said, according to ABC News. The incident occurred just before 1:30p.m. MDT at Pearl St. Mall where a group was gathered in a peaceful pro-Israel demonstration, known as the Boulder Run for their Lives event. The Anti Defamation League said it was aware of the attack. "ADL is monitoring the situation in Colorado as we approach the holiday of Shavuot," it said in a statement on Facebook. Police responded to reports of a man wielding a weapon and that people were being set on fire, a statement on social media from the Boulder Police Department said. It said there were multiple burn victims on the scene. Witnesses told local media that the suspect attacked victims with Molotov cocktails. Police established an evacuation zone and directed people to avoid the area. Emergency medical crews transported several victims to local hospitals, some of whom sustained life-threatening injuries, police said. Please check back for updates as this is a developing story.
