Gary Lineker slams BBC for ‘losing their way' and ‘tying themselves up in knots' in first interview after MOTD axe
GARY Lineker says the BBC has 'lost their way' when it comes to impartiality in his first interview since he left Match Of The Day following an anti-semitism row. And in a talk at Glastonbury festival, he revealed that the Corporation had announced his exit before even making him aware of their decision. Gary, 64, said: 'The impartiality issue has become a massive problem that I think they've probably created themselves by the rules that have been set within the business. 'I understand in your news and current affairs they have to be generally impartial but, I mean, it is hot today right? I think we can all say that we don't need someone to come in to tell us it's actually not hot. 'We just need to know the truth. 'There are thousands of amazing people at the BBC but it's not reflected at the top. 'They've tried themselves up in knots with it.' Gary had intended to leave the flagship show after this summer's World Cup but instead hosted his last Match of the Day on June 26. Gary Lineker apologises for antisemitic post and confirms he's quitting BBC next week 'So the next day they announced I wasn't doing the show. 'They actually announced it without telling me first. I always will and I'm not bitter or twisted about anything that happened.' 1 Gary Lineker, pictured with Zara Sultana, says the BBC has 'lost their way' when it comes to impartiality

USA women hit huge win milestone with another rout against Carla Ward's Republic of Ireland
USA women's team earned their 600th international win on Sunday night after another dominant performance against the Republic of Ireland. The five-time World Cup winners replicated their 4–0 victory over Ireland from Thursday night in Denver. 2 Carla Ward's Ireland suffered a second defeat to the USA after another 4-0 defeat 2 Alyssa Thompson and Emma Sears celebrate during the 4-0 win over Ireland in Ohio This milestone only fuels their relentless drive to dismantle every opponent they face. From the off, the USA were merciless, and Carla Ward's young Irish squad struggled to find any rhythm under sustained pressure. The visitors were on the back foot right from the start as Emma Hayes's team sizzled in the heat with slick one-touch football. It was 1–0 after 11 minutes as a smooth one‑two move tore through Ireland's compact defence. read more on football Emma Sears sprinted down the right flank and delivered a perfectly weighted cross to the far post. Lynn Biyendolo met it first time with a composed side‑foot volley that screamed into the top corner. The scheduled water stoppage at 25 minutes offered Ireland a much -needed breather as they absorbed relentless pressure. Pinned deep, they managed only sporadic counters - too few to spare their overstretched defence. Despite the lopsided play, Abbie Larkin chipped in with flashes of quality, and Chloe Mustaki punched above her weight at left-back, defending with grit and tenacity. Most read in Football But it was all USA on the scoreboard, and they added to that tally just before the break. Just as Ireland seemed poised to head into the interval trailing by only one, fate struck again. Chelsea vs Benfica SUSPENDED with just five minutes left as referee takes players off due to severe lightning storm Emma Sears appeared to double the lead, only for Brosnan to produce a brilliant close-range save. But the rebound fell kindly for Izzy Rodriguez, who powered it home to double the US lead at half-time - a cruel echo of Wednesday's Denver fixture. The second half kicked off at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, with Ireland making three changes. Lucy Quinn, Hayley Nolan - who last played in the United States in April 2023 - and Megan Connolly all joined the action. Minutes later, a slick pass by 19-year-old Olivia Moultrie opened up space behind the defence. Izzy Rodriguez sent in a dangerous cross, but a loose volley gave Ireland a reprieve. It was still one-way traffic. By the 50th minute, Lynn Biyendolo ghosted in behind the defence, nearly catching Brosnan off her line - but the keeper recovered quickly and parried her firm effort to safety. Minutes later, another probing move saw Hayley Nolan caught out at the back, allowing Tara McKeown to surge into the box. Her cutback to Croix Bethune was decisively blocked by a scrambling Irish defender. At 54 minutes, Emma Sears unleashed a dipping strike that flew just over Brosnan's crossbar - a near miss that briefly rekindled Ireland's hopes. A third goal soon followed as Sam Coffey initiated a slick move by threading a ball into the middle for Yazmeen Ryan. The pass looked overhit, but Emma Sears kept it alive, finding Olivia Moultrie. Moultrie teed up Ryan, who slid home the U.S.'s third goal, putting the result beyond doubt. A further water break at 70 minutes offered Ireland some respite in the scorching Ohio heat. But Ireland still couldn't get hold of the ball, as the US side pinned them in their own half. Alyssa Thompson entered the game at 80 minutes. Courtney Brosnan made another strong save just moments later, after Emily Sams cracked a close-range shot following Ireland's failure to deal with a free-kick. A perfectly weighted lofted pass caught Ireland's flat defence off guard, and Alyssa Thompson took charge - first with a sharp touch, then rifling a powerful low finish into the net to make it 4–0. The final minutes fizzled out in the scorching heat of Cincinnati after another gruelling learning curve for Ireland. Ward's side now turns their attention toward the Nations League play-off with Belgium this autumn. Ireland suffer second four-goal defeat to USA in stifling Cincinnati heat
A second comprehensive beating in three days and plenty to stew over ahead of the Nations League play-off. Belgium, October's opponents in the battle for top-tier football in next year's World Cup qualifiers, won't pack the same punch as the USA, long-term occupants of the number one spot in FIFA's world rankings. But they are still five places above 25th-ranked Ireland and they picked up wins against England and Portugal in their recent Nations League campaign. And they won't be intimidated by an Irish side that barely made it out of their half on Sunday in Cincinnati, against a rampant US outfit. Carla Ward will struggle to pick too many positives out of this experience, other than the fact that wave after wave of American attack didn't lead to a more humbling defeat. Fresh from the 4-0 reversal in Colorado, Ward made four changes to her starting-11, with Tyler Toland, Marissa Sheva, Saoirse Noonan and Abbie Larkin coming into the side. However, the same goalkeeper and defenders that started the first game quickly found themselves under siege once again. The hosts targeted the left side of the Irish defence and Chloe Mustaki struggled to deal with the pace and movement of Emma Hayes' world-class stars. It wasn't just Mustaki who struggled. Even after half-time, when she was replaced by Megan Connolly, the majority of US attacks came down that flank. Played in an intense 31-degree heat in front of just over 24,000 fans, not even a water break midway through each half could halt the USA's forward momentum. Having opened the scoring in the 18th minute in Colorado, they were off the mark even earlier on Sunday. It took Lynn Biyendolo just 11 minutes to score her 25th senior international goal. Emma Seers found herself in plenty of space down the right and she made no mistake in picking out the run of Biyendolo. The finish was clinical; a smooth side-footed volley from eight yards high into the left-hand corner of Courtney Brosnan's net. With the hosts camped inside Irish territory, the attacks continued at a frightening pace, with goalscorer Biyendolo coming close to connecting with a free-kick in the 16th minute. Another attack down the Irish left saw Biyendolo's effort blocked by Jessie Stapleton, but only into the path of Croix Bethune, whose first-time effort curled just wide of the upright. There was little the Irish defence could do to contain Biyendolo and she had the ball in the net again on 24 minutes, but the whistle had already gone for a foul on Stapleton in the build-up. Moments later Kyra Carusa was back helping out her defence with an important block to deny Bethune, while Mustaki then put her body between a Bethune shot and the goal. When Yazmeen Ryan was teed by by another Seers cross from the left, nine minutes before half-time, the chance was identical to the opener, but the finish was not, as the ball sailed high and wide of the target. A second goal seemed inevitable and it came in the 42nd minute, much to the dismay of Brosnan, who had just pulled off a fine save to deny Seers. However, as the ball broke loose in the Irish penalty area, Izzy Rodriguez reacted quickest to smash the ball into the unguarded net. Once again, it was all too easy for the US as Bethune and Olivia Moultrie managed to work the ball into Seers deep inside the box. Half-time came and went, with Ward making three changes, but with little effect on the direction of traffic. Biyendolo came close twice in the minutes after the break, first with a volley that she couldn't steer on target and then with a ghosting run and angled drive that was beaten away by Brosnan. Moultrie latched onto a loose pass inside by Caitlin Hayes and shot narrowly wide from 18 yards, with Ryan screaming for the ball inside her. The third goal came in the 66th minute when the outstanding Seers kept the ball in place on the right end-line, laid it back to Moultrie and her low cross was swept home by Yazmeen Ryan. With four minutes to go, the US made it a pair of 4-0 wins when substitute Alyssa Thompson raced between Stapleton and Hayes to finish past Brosnan. USA: Mandy McGlynn; Emily Sams, Jordyn Bugg, Tara McKeown, Izzy Rodriguez; Sam Meza (Rose Lavelle 87), Olivia Moultrie (Catherine Hutton 80); Emma Sears, Croix Bethune (Allyson Sentnor 63), Yazmeen Ryan (Alyssa Thompson 80); Lynn Biyendolo (Sam Coffey 63). Ireland: Courtney Brosnan; Jessie Stapleton, Anna Patten (Ruesha Littlejohn 73), Caitlin Hayes, Chloe Mustaki (Megan Connolly 46); Tyler Toland (Izzy Atkinson 84), Marissa Sheva; Emily Murphy (Hayley Nolan 46), Kyra Carusa, Abbie Larkin (Lucy Quinn 46); Saoirse Noonan (Amber Barrett 58).
