Western France and Ireland among European countries hit by severe weather
After heavy rainfall from Storm Herminia, Météo France has now issued a new warning for Storm Ivo, which is approaching the coast Brittany. Six departments in mainland France are under an orange alert for flood risks on Thursday, January 30, while Ille-et-Vilaine, Loire-Atlantique, and Morbihan are on red alert.
Calvados, Orne, Mayenne, Somme, Sarthe, and Maine-et-Loire remain under orange alert.
Due to the severity of the situation, French authorities have fast-tracked the process to declare a state of natural disaster.
In Ireland, Storm Éowyn has caused widespread power outages, leading the government to request EU assistance. In response, the EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated, supplying 13 power generators from the rescEU strategic reserve.
Additionally, the EU has activated the Copernicus emergency management service, providing analytical support to national authorities.
A team of ten Austrian power workers arrived in Ireland to assist EBS with power restoration.

It was the highest level recorded for that period of time in the year since monitoring began in 2012, and more than 20 points higher than the average between 2012-2024. The EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service, based on satellite imagery, takes into account three benchmarks: precipitations, or rainfall, soil moisture and the state of vegetation. Watch, warning, alert There are three levels of drought: watch, warning and alert. Between May 11-20, 42 percent of Europe's soil and the Mediterranean basin were lacking in moisture, at a warning level, and five percent at alert level, signalling that vegetation was developping abnormally. Northern, eastern and central European countries were mainly concerned, with high alert levels. Some 19 percent of Ukrainian territory was on a state of alert while other countries were in a worrying situation, including Belarus (17 percent), Poland (10 percent), Hungary and Slovakia (nine percent). To the south, the level of alert stood at 20 percent in some countries and territories, including in Syria, Cyprus and the Palestinian territories. While stopping short of a state of alert, several countries were in mid-May hit by some kind of large drought, including the United Kingdom across 98 percent of its territory since mid-March. The UK's official weather service The Met Office said the UK experienced its its warmest spring on record -- and its driest in more than 50 years. The European Central Bank warned on May 23 of major economic risks from drought, which can threaten up to 15 percent of production in the eurozone due to increasing extreme weather caused by climate change.

Smoke from Canadian fires reaches Europe: EU climate monitor
The huge plumes are at very high altitude and do not pose an immediate health risk, it said in a statement. "Smoke originating from the wildfires in the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan has been transported across the Atlantic," the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) said. Satellites tracked the smoke in mid-May, with some plumes reaching as far east as Greece and the eastern Mediterranean. "A second, much larger, smoke plume crossed the Atlantic during the last week of May, reaching northwestern parts of Europe on June 1," CAMS said. Additional plumes are expected to shade the continent in the coming days. Wildfire smoke is comprised of gaseous pollutants such as carbon monoxide, along with water vapor and particle pollution, which can be particularly hazardous to health. A high concentration of carbon monoxide is expected to pass over northwestern France, including the Paris Basin, on Tuesday. The high-altitude smoke headed for Europe is not expected to have a significant impact on surface air quality, but is likely to result in hazy skies and reddish-orange sunsets. Manitoba in central Canada is experiencing its worst start to the fire season in years due to drought, and Saskatchewan to the west declared a state of emergency at the end of May, evacuating thousands of residents. "Central regions of Canada have experienced a very intense few weeks in terms of wildfire emissions," said Mark Parrington, scientific director at CAMS. Canadian authorities have forecast a more intense fire season than usual this summer in central and western Canada, due in particular to severe or extreme drought. Elsewhere, extensive forest fires have been raging in Russia's Far Eastern Federal District since early April, particularly east of Lake Baikal, generating carbon emissions of around 35 million tons, Copernicus reported.

Eastern France placed on weather alert for severe thunderstorms
Nine French départements were placed on the second-highest weather warning - the 'orange' alert - on Tuesday by French national weather service, Météo France, for thunderstorms. After thunderstorms hit parts of central and eastern France on Sunday and Monday, more intense weather was expected on Tuesday for the départements of Saône-et-Loire, Jura, Ain, Rhône, Loire, Allier, Haute-Loire, Puy-de-Dôme, and Cantal. Storms were expected to hit Tuesday afternoon, from 2pm, and into the evening, with forecasters warning that they could be accompanied by hail, wind gusts of up to 80 to 100 km/h and intense rainfall of 20 to 40mm in one to three hours. Parts of south-west France may also see thunderstorms and rain too, albeit later in the evening as storms arrive. As such, Météo France may list some départements in the Occitanie region on alert later in the day. You can keep up with French weather alerts on the website.
