Naomi Girma's soccer roots began with community, now she's an Olympian
Naomi Girma will make her Olympic soccer debut in Paris, but her journey to becoming an Olympian started years earlier with Ethiopian community soccer games.
The U.S. women's national team is back in action Saturday, as the 2024 Paris Olympic champions host China in a friendly at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The USWNT is in a transition phase, with head coach Emma Hayes evaluating how to operate without the team's world-class "Triple Espresso" front line. Mallory Swanson and Sophia Wilson are both pregnant, while Trinity Rodman has not played in the NWSL since April 12 as she battles a persistent back injury.
While 20-year-old Angel City FC star Alyssa Thompson has emerged as an answer in the attack, the front line is not the only work in progress. Phallon Tullis-Joyce may be emerging as the lead candidate to replace longtime goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher (who retired from the USWNT in November), while star defender Naomi Girma is working her way back from a calf injury that has disrupted her start to life at Chelsea after a record-breaking transfer in January.
Here's what to know for the USWNT friendly against China, including time, how to watch, and the U.S. roster:

F1 Spanish GP: Charles Leclerc–Max Verstappen incident results in no further action
The FIA race stewards have taken no further action against Charles Leclerc for making contact with Max Verstappen in Formula 1's Spanish Grand Prix - meaning the Ferrari driver has retained his podium position. On a lap 61 safety car restart, Verstappen lost momentum with a huge oversteer moment out of the final corner as he tried to get his hard tyres up to speed against drivers around him on softer rubber. Advertisement That opened the door for Leclerc to pull alongside and overtake Verstappen, but then the Monegasque appeared to slightly move towards the Dutchman's car while they were still alongside, something Verstappen felt Leclerc should have been penalised for. The stewards held a different view and noted both drivers were moving towards each other, leaving it as a racing incident with neither party fully to blame. "The Stewards heard from the driver of Car 1 (Max Verstappen), the driver of Car 16 (Charles Leclerc), team representatives and reviewed positioning/marshalling system data, video, timing, telemetry, team radio and in-car video evidence," the stewards wrote. "Car 1 lost traction while navigating Turn 14 and therefore had to defend his position on track against Car 16. Car 16 proceeded to move to overtake Car 1 on the start-finish straight. Both cars were moving slightly towards each other in the middle of the track and a minor collision occurred as a result. In the circumstances, we took no further action." Verstappen eventually finished 10th after a 10s penalty for colliding into George Russell, while Leclerc claimed third behind the two McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Verstappen's penalty came with three penalty points on his licence, leaving him one point away from a race ban between now and the Austrian Grand Prix at the end of June. Hamilton passed by Leclerc and Hulkenberg in another low point since joining Ferrari
MONTMELO, Spain (AP) — Lewis Hamilton's frustrating debut season with Ferrari hit a new low point during the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday. A sixth-placed finish wasn't bad, even for a seven-time world champion. But Hamilton again finished behind teammate Charles Leclerc, who was third, and had to endure his team telling him to get out the way for Leclerc. Worse was to come near the end, however, when Nico Hulkenberg overtook Hamilton in his Sauber. Hamilton said his car was unbalanced. 'I have no idea why it was so bad,' Hamilton said. 'That was the worst race I have experienced, balance-wise.' The only bright spot for Hamilton since he left Mercedes for Ferrari this season was his sprint win in China. That, however, was followed by a double disqualification for him and Leclerc in the Grand Prix the next day. His best race finish this season was fourth in Imola. ___

Disqualification drama erupts as results overturned after Oscar Piastri victory
F1 fans and commentators are questioning why Max Verstappen wasn't disqualified from the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday night, after Oscar Piastri powered to victory to extend his lead in the championship. Piastri secured his fifth win of the season, winning from pole position ahead of McLaren teammate Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc. The win for Piastri extended the Aussie's lead in the driver standings to 10 points from Norris, with McLaren winning seven races out of nine so far. But the victory was overshadowed by drama and controversy for Verstappen, who many believe should have been disqualified. The defending world champion crossed the finish line in fifth position, but was later relegated to P10 after stewards overturned the result. Verstappen was hit with a 10-second penalty for deliberately colliding with Mercedes driver George Russell late in the race. The incident occurred after a safety car with five laps remaining, which saw Verstappen end up on slower hard tyres against his rivals on softs. He immediately lost third position to Leclerc, and then went off track as he tried to defend against Russell. Red Bull then ordered Verstappen to let Russell past because they knew he was too fast on the softer tyres, and the Dutch driver initially appeared to do so. But as Russell went around him, Verstappen sped up and caused a collision, spearing into the Mercedes driver. It was the second time Verstappen had collided with Russell, and the Dutchman was also investigated post-race for an incident with Leclerc. Stewards took no further action over the Leclerc incident, but hit Verstappen with a 10-second penalty for ramming into Russell. The penalty saw Verstappen plummet five places in the final standings, although former world champion Nico Rosberg said he was lucky not to be disqualified. "It looked like a very intentional retaliation," Roseberg said on Sky Sports. "Wait for the opponent, go ramming into him, just like you felt the other guy rammed into you at turn one. "I think the rules would be a black flag, yes. If you wait for your opponent to bang into him, that's a black flag (disqualification). That is bad, that is seriously bad. You need to black flag that, there's no other way. That's something that is extremely unacceptable." Verstappen didn't deny after the race that his actions were deliberate. "Does it matter?" he said. "I prefer to speak about the race than just one single moment." Russell was scathing in his assessment of Verstappen, who is now just one more penalty away from a race ban. "I was as surprised as you guys were," he told reporters. "I've seen these manoeuvres before on simulator games and in go-karting, but never in F1. "Ultimately, we came home in P4 and he came home in P10. I don't know what was going through his mind. It felt deliberate in the moment so, yeah, it was a bit surprising. It's a shame that something like that continues to occur. It seems totally unnecessary and it never seems to benefit himself." RELATED: Lewis Hamilton makes staggering call on Oscar Piastri winning title Oscar Piastri's telling response after Aussie driver sacked by F1 team Piastri won by 2.4 seconds in what was the third McLaren 1-2 of the season. "We executed everything we needed to. I am really enjoying it," he said post-race. "The pace was good and we could turn it on when we needed to. The team gave me a great car and winning races is a lot of fun." Norris said: "Oscar drove a very good race. I didn't have the pace to match him but I gave it my best shot. It's a long race, anything could have happened at the end of the race. We both got pretty sideways with the safety car restart. It was a good, fun race and for us as a team to finish one-two is even better." Verstappen is an absolute disgrace 'suddenly accelerated' well then it's quite clear this wasn't a defensive move gone wrong he obviously rammed into him on purpose? You cannot do that at all, you have to ban him for Canada and no less? What a joke, anyone else and they're banned — Dan Castell (@_Dan_Castell) June 1, 2025 You should count your blessings that Verstappen didn't get disqualified for that demolition job he pulled on Russell. 🤫 — 𝓕𝓮𝓻𝓻𝓪𝓻𝓲 𝓕𝓸𝓻𝓮𝓿𝓮𝓻 (@Ferrari_Power1) June 1, 2025 Verstappen should have just been disqualified. He doesn't deserve a point. He doesn't deserve to be a champion — simon burns (@simonburns74) June 1, 2025 Verstappen should have been black flagged for what he did.
