Elderly man attacked and left for dead for cornflakes and a shepherd's pie, court told
An 87-year-old man was attacked in the street and left for dead for the sake of a box of cornflakes and a shepherd's pie, a court has heard.
John Mackey had visited a north London Co-op store where he bought food and a newspaper before visiting a kebab shop on the afternoon of Tuesday May 6.
He was allegedly followed in the street and set upon when he reached Goodchild Road in Manor House.
Emergency services were alerted after he was found unconscious and bleeding from his head at around 5.53pm.
Mr Mackey was taken to hospital where he regained consciousness but died two days later.
Prosecutor Ben Holt said: 'A member of the public saw Mr Mackey lying on the pavement and heard a male shouting 'give me the bag' and a man standing over Mr Mackey.'
Other eyewitnesses allegedly saw a male being punched, kicked and stamped on, the Old Bailey was told.
The attacker allegedly made off with the victim's black duffel bag containing his cornflakes, shepherd's pie and newspaper.
A post-mortem examination gave the provisional cause of death as bleeding on the brain and fractured ribs, Mr Holt told the court.
Peter Augustine, 58, of Green Lanes, Hornsey, north London, was arrested on May 8 and charged with Mr Mackey's murder and robbery.
On Tuesday, his case was brought to the Old Bailey for a preliminary hearing.
Judge Richard Marks KC set a two-week trial from November 3, with a plea hearing on July 29.

On Monday night, hundreds of people gathered in Ballymena at a protest that was believed to be related to that ongoing court crowd of men, women and children gathered close to the town centre and marched along Larne Street and then Queen Street.

Cops release new images of man wanted for 'murdering his daughters'
Washington State police released new images of the man accused of murdering his three daughters as the search for the former soldier continues. Travis Decker, 32, is wanted for the alleged murder of his children Paityn, nine, Evelyn, eight, and Olivia, five. Authorities started searching for his daughters after they failed to return home from a scheduled visit with him on May 30. On Monday, the children's bodies were found at a campsite in Leavenworth, around 20 miles from their home. Their wrists had been bound with zip ties and each of them had been suffocated with a plastic bag. A manhunt is underway for Decker and the Chelan County Sheriff's Office released new images of the dad on Saturday. An updated wanted poster showed Decker wearing a tan shirt with the number 59 on the sleeve, dark shorts, and flip flops. His hair was tied back and he carried pizza boxes. The poster also included close up photos of Decker's tattoos on his arms and ankle, and stated that Decker was 'last seen wearing tan or green t-shirt, dark shorts'. 'Updated photos of murder suspect Travis Decker, who is considered dangerous and may be armed. Do not approach, call 911 immediately,' the poster stated. The Chelan County Sheriff's Office announced they would be removing road blocks and reopening roads after hundreds of law enforcement personnel search dozes of structures and the forest. 'However, we ask the public to remain vigilant at they venture back out to the recreation areas of Chelan County,' the sheriff's office said. 'We ask that the public help continue to help us in this search. Please review your doorbell cameras and security cameras for signs of Mr Decker. 'If you are out in the woods, or recreation areas, and come across something you believe would be beneficial for law enforcement, note the time and location and mark the location on your electronic devices if possible.' After finding the girls, investigators 'obtained and served multiple search warrants for records contained in Decker's Google accounts,' leading them to discover that he ppeared to be planning how to relocate to Canada, according to an affidavit reviewed by the Independent. In the affidavit, Deputy U.S. Marshal Keegan Stanley wrote that Decker made several searches on May 26, including: 'how does a person move to Canada,' 'how to relocate to Canada' and 'jobs Canada'. The father, who remains on the run, then visited the website 'Find a job - Stanley detailed. His daughters' remains were also found 'relatively close to the Canadian border and approximately 11 miles from the Pacific Crest Trail, a well-established trail that leads directly to Canada,' per the affidavit. Decker, who is wanted on three counts each of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping, also 'has training in navigation, woodland/mountainous terrain, long distance movements, survival and numerous other disciplines needed to be able to flee,' the affidavit continued. 'Prior to the above alleged crimes, Decker frequently recreated in outdoor, woodland and mountainous areas throughout the Eastern District of Washington and surrounding states,' it read. 'Amongst other outdoorsman activities, Decker frequently engaged in hiking, camping, survival skill practice, hunting and even lived off the grid in the backwoods for approximately 2.5 months on one occasion.' He is considered very dangerous given his extensive military training and propensity for violence.

A brave aunt has been left with broken bones and gaping wounds after using herself as a 'human blanket' to protect her niece from a vicious dog attack. Abbie Nudd, 32, of Willow Way, Dovercourt, had taken Lydia, four, to meet an American Bulldog that her neighbours were looking after on Tuesday, June 2. But after the initial pleasantries where the dog had been sitting nicely and allowing Ms Nudd and Lydia to stroke it, the canine's mood quickly changed and its demeanor shifted. Sensing the danger, Ms Nudd asked Lydia to step back from the animal - but it had already locked the the four-year-old's right arm in its mouth. 'Somehow, I managed to prise the dog's mouth open and get her arm out of the dog's mouth', Ms Nudd told Echo News. She then 'leapt' on top of Lydia to protect her while the neighbours tried in vain to control the situation by prodding the dog with a washing pole. Such attempts proved futile, and Ms Nudd said she eventually 'decided to give up' and allowed the dog to bite her so that it would not go for her niece again. It was an act of bravery that left her with bite marks to the face, both arms and torso before it chewed through her wrist bone - breaking it in the process. The dog had been sitting nicely and allowing Ms Nudd (above) and Lydia to stroke it, but the canine's mood quickly changed and its demeanor shifted - the attack left Ms Nudd with bite marks to the face, both arms and torso before it chewed through her wrist bone 'I felt like I was being ragged around the garden, I did an elbow drop a few times on the dog to try and get it off me', she added. When police and medics arrived at the scene, Ms Nudd said the dog was still behaving aggressively and was calmed down by a man known to it before being taken away in a police car. Ms Nudd and Lydia were taken to Colchester Hospital before being transferred to Broomfield Hospital, where they were given general anaesthetic and had their wounds treated. Lydia was discharged the following day and is back with her parents, while Ms Nudd remained in hospital until yesterday so that her fracture and wounds could be monitored. A spokesman for Essex Police said: 'A woman was arrested as part of our response to an incident involving a dog in Harwich in which a young child and a woman sustained injuries. 'We were alerted to the incident, in Willow Way, at 4.30pm on Tuesday June 3. 'All emergency services attended the scene and found a woman and a young child who had sustained serious injuries which required hospital treatment. 'A woman, aged in her 30s, from Harwich, was arrested on suspicion of having a dog dangerously out of control. 'She has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue. The dog was seized and has been taken to secure kennels. 'Our investigation will now progress appropriately, and we would ask people not to speculate around the nature of the incident.'
