Beat writer doubts that the Lakers can land Walker Kessler
Among the centers the Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly been interested in or have tried to acquire in recent months, Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz ranks somewhere near the top of that list.
At age 23, he is a monstrous rebounder and shot-blocker, and while he isn't an offensive threat, he can convert lob passes into easy baskets near the rim.
He was apparently unavailable via trade prior to February's trade deadline, but according to a recent report, the Jazz will be open to trade talks involving him. However, Lakers beat writer Jovan Buha poured some cold water on any real hope fans may have about landing Kessler.
During a recent episode of "Buha's Block," Buha cast doubt on the Lakers' ability to land him, given their limited trade assets.
'I just don't know if the Lakers have the requisite assets to get Walker Kessler, but I think he's likely available for the right price,' Buha said. 'I just think that price is very high, and I don't know if the Lakers can get to it.'
One has to assume that Utah would demand big-time draft compensation for Kessler, especially since Kessler will make just $4.9 million next season. The Lakers only have one future first-round draft pick available for use in a trade, according to NBA rules, although they can also offer two future second-round picks and up to five future first-round pick swaps.
Kessler, who is seven feet tall and weighs 245 pounds, averaged 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks a game and led the league in offensive rebounds per game this season.

Magic Johnson makes expectations clear for Luka Doncic
The Luka Doncic era has begun for the Los Angeles Lakers. While LeBron James, presumably, has at least one season left with the team, the pressure and expectations of leading the team to success have shifted over to Doncic. In six seasons and change with the Dallas Mavericks, he reached the Western Conference Finals twice and the NBA Finals once. While that may be considered somewhat satisfactory for that franchise, things are much different when they play for the Lakers, a franchise that has won 17 world championships. Magic Johnson, who led the Lakers to five of those championships, made it clear during an appearance on ESPN's "First Take" that the standard of excellence for Doncic in L.A. is the Larry O'Brien Trophy. "Luka gotta understand this is not Dallas. To your point, Kobe [Bryant], superstar who led us, Shaq (Shaquille O'Neal) led us to a championship, LeBron led us. And that's what's missing here. We shouldn't have to tell you to be in shape, you should have been about that, right? Especially when you're a superstar. So this is gonna be an important year for the Lakers, important offseason for the Lakers." So far this offseason, Doncic has looked noticeably thinner, which is certainly a good sign. Assuming the Lakers improve the rest of their roster, it will now be on Doncic to lead the way, both on and off the court, along with James, as they continue to seek their 18th NBA title. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle It won't be enough for Doncic to continue to put up insane numbers — he needs to consistently deliver in crunch time, something he didn't do enough of since joining the team, and especially during the postseason. That is what true Lakers greats such as Bryant, O'Neal, Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did in the past and what James did during the franchise's last championship season five years ago.

New Los Angeles Lakers Rumor May Reveal Likely Big Man Trade Target This Summer
A new rumor reveals the Los Angeles Lakers attempted a trade for Atlanta Hawks big man Onyeka Okongwu this season. Could he be at the top of their center wish list this summer? Even before the Lakers made a historic trade for Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic, there had been rumors about the organization's desire to find an impact player for the center spot. The deal only exacerbated that need for the rest of the season. And it is expected to be a priority for the front office this summer. Advertisement Related: Los Angeles Lakers insider suggests LeBron James leaving this summer possible due to 'frosty' relationship Los Angeles did try to make a deal for a big after the Doncic trade. And they had agreed on a trade for Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams. However, after reviewing his medicals, they rescinded the deal. But this week, ESPN NBA insider Dave McMenamin revealed on the 'Straight Fire' with Jason McIntyre podcast that the team was working on a deal for a different player before Williams. 'Before the Mark Williams trade, and I can't tell you all the names on that list, but I actually assume he was one of the names on the list that Rob Pelinka presented to Luka, because I do know the Lakers made a call to the Hawks around the trade deadline about Okongwu,' he said [h/t Lakers Nation]. Is Onyeka Okongwu a good fit for the Los Angeles Lakers? After landing in Los Angeles, GM Rob Pelinka and Doncic sat down in February and went over possible big men that could benefit from playing with him and vice versa. Similar to how well he played with Daniel Gafford in Dallas the last season and a half. Advertisement If the Lakers reached out about a potential deal, that means the young superstar gave his boss the thumbs up on a pursuit. It is unclear why a deal didn't materialize. But the 24-year-old is a fast-improving talent and may be the heir apparent to Clint Capella in Atlanta. It is why the team gave him a four-year, $61.8 million contract extension before the season. So the Hawks won't give him up easily. So, is he a perfect fit for LA? McMenamin says yes, and no. 'I think lob threat, athleticism, absolutely. In terms of being a perfect fit, maybe not. They might not get a perfect fit, though,' he added. 'Clint Capela of 17-'18 might have been a perfect fit. But we're in 25-'26 now. So that is kind of the spot they're gonna be in. New rumor details what Los Angeles Lakers must include in any summer trade for impact center
Scouts and executives around the game reportedly believe the Los Angeles Lakers will have to fork over specific assets, including Austin Reaves, if they hope to land an impact center this offseason. After being surprisingly ousted in the opening round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs, the Lakers must now shift gears to improving the roster around top stars Luka Doncic and LeBron James. They will look to address different needs this summer, but adding a worthwhile big man will be their top priority. Advertisement Due to their salary limitations, getting a big from the free agent market is unlikely. Especially since the options are underwhelming. That is why a trade is expected to fill the need. But if they hope to acquire a meaningful frontcourt talent this summer, they will need to give up certain assets in any deal. 'According to rival scouts and executives, the Lakers' best assets (minus Reaves) are their 2031 first-round pick, second-year wing Dalton Knecht, and a bunch of expiring contracts,' the Los Angeles Times reported. 'Some combination of them would be a must in any deal the team would make for a center.' Myles Turner, Brook Lopez, Clint Capela, and Jaxson Hayes are the most notable names on the free agent center market. However, Turner is way out of the Lakers' price range. Lopez and Hayes have played for the franchise previously, and the organization is probably not interested in a reunion. Capela would seem like a strong option. But the LA Times revealed, 'there are questions around the league about whether he's still a full-time starter.' Advertisement More Los Angeles Lakers news and rumors:
