Indian university boom in UAE: Affordable, high-quality education by top-tier campuses

The UAE is increasingly positioning itself as a global destination for higher education, with a significant rise in the presence of Indian universities contributing to the country's growing academic credibility and appeal on the world stage. Educators in the country also highlighted that the India-UAE partnership is enabling new models of cross-border learning. Over the past decade, Indian universities have seen a staggering 390 per cent increase in global rankings representation, and many are now setting up campuses in the UAE, a move that aligns with the country's vision to become a premier education hub. Notably, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi's Abu Dhabi campus, the first international branch of the prestigious institute, has recently completed its first year and aims to become a global centre for innovation and talent development. This growing presence is especially resonant with the UAE's large Indian diaspora, as well as international students looking for affordable, high-quality education in a region renowned for its connectivity, safety, and innovation-driven economy. What's driving the change? Souri Banerjee, Director of BITS Pilani, said, "This remarkable surge significantly enhances the global credibility of Indian institutions and aligns well with the UAE's vision of emerging as a premier regional education hub. It draws international attention to the academic potential of the region and reinforces confidence among students and parents in the quality of education available right here in the UAE." Educational experts note that the UAE's strategic location, multicultural ecosystem, and forward-looking policies make it an attractive base for reputed universities to expand abroad — especially those from India, a country with deep-rooted ties to the Emirates. "BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus is deeply rooted in the legacy of its parent institute in India and is committed to advancing global academic excellence. We actively pursue cross-border collaborations, joint research projects, and student exchange programmes that enrich our academic portfolio while fostering innovation and connectivity within the international education ecosystem," added Banerjee. Meanwhile, with 54 Indian institutions now featured, India has overtaken many long-established systems to become the fourth most-represented country in the rankings. Experts also pointed out that Indian universities are no longer seen solely as regional institutions. They now represent global standards of academic excellence, innovation, and industry-readiness. Dr Anita Patankar, Executive Director of Symbiosis Dubai, said, "As these institutions expand globally, their presence in the UAE strengthens the country's position as a serious player in international higher education. Being selected as one of only five Indian universities under the India-UAE bilateral agreement and the first with full CAA accreditation, Symbiosis Dubai stands as a clear example of how academic excellence, global trust, and regional opportunity can converge." "Students are no longer just looking for a degree; they're looking for relevance, mobility, and real-world outcomes. And globally respected Indian universities are delivering on that promise right here in Dubai," she added. IIT Delhi ranks joint 123rd globally At the forefront of this progress in India, is IIT Delhi, now ranked joint 123rd globally, as per the QS World University Rankings 2026. IIT Delhi has jumped more than 70 positions since 2024. The employer reputation of Indian institutions continues to soar, with five in the global top 100, ahead of even Mainland China and France on average. Moreover, India places eight institutions in the global top 100 for Citations per Faculty, demonstrating its rapidly expanding research footprint. QS CEO Jessica Turner said, "India is rewriting the global higher education map. No other country has seen more universities debut in this edition of the QS World University Rankings — a clear sign of a system evolving at speed and scale." She added, "We see clear progress: Indian universities are strengthening their global research footprint and advancing in areas such as Citations per Faculty, Sustainability, and International Research Network." She explained going forward Transnational education and Transnational Research will be a vital part of this transformation. "We are seeing a two-way flow accelerating: leading global universities are establishing offshore campuses and joint programmes in India, while Indian institutions are beginning to export their own education by building TNE partnerships and campuses abroad, with joint research as a key component of partnership development."

RAK Airport unveils new terminal to boost tourism as it eyes 3 million travellers

Ras Al Khaimah International Airport has launched a significant expansion with a new 30,000 sqm terminal, adding to the existing Departure 4,933 sqm and Arrival 3,134 sqm terminals. Led by Sheikh Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Department of Civil Aviation and the Airport's Board, the project is a strategic step toward establishing Ras Al Khaimah as a key aviation and tourism hub in the UAE. In an exclusive interview with Khaleej Times, Sheikh Salem outlined the vision behind the development. The new terminal will feature advanced baggage handling systems, electronic gates, upgraded customs and police services, and enhanced passport control, all designed to improve the passenger experience significantly. A key objective of the expansion is to increase the airport's capacity to meet rising demand, particularly as new resorts and hotels emerge in destinations like Al Marjan Island. "We've opened tenders for a private aviation terminal, which will include dedicated hangars and aircraft parking areas to meet increasing demand from high-end travelers and private jet operators," Sheikh Salem revealed. This facility will operate separately from the main terminal and cater to the growing luxury travel segment. The terminal will also integrate the latest technologies and innovative services to offer a world-class travel experience. "The airport is the gateway to Ras Al Khaimah, and this expansion is central to the emirate's broader vision to grow its tourism and aviation sectors," he said. Construction of the terminal is expected to be completed by 2028. It is part of a broader strategic development plan involving local consultants and companies and is aligned with a privatisation initiative to enhance operational efficiency. The expansion isn't limited to passenger services. A new air cargo operator has already chosen RAK Airport as its regional base, completing over 100 freight flights transporting pharmaceuticals, livestock, and other goods. Plans are also in motion to establish an aircraft maintenance center, adding another layer to the airport's economic impact. "There's significant growth in both passenger traffic and cargo movement, and we're seeing an upward trend across all areas," Sheikh Salem added, emphasising the airport's growing role in supporting the emirate's economy. Eco-friendly technologies The new terminal will incorporate eco-friendly technologies such as energy-efficient LED lighting, geothermal heat pumps, and water recycling systems to support Ras Al Khaimah's sustainability goals. Sheikh Salem also announced that the terminal will become the first in the Middle East and wider Asia to implement DYNAES's thermodynamic energy efficiency solutions, marking a regional milestone in green airport infrastructure. The airport is home to several carriers, including Air Arabia, IndiGo, and Air India Express, with charter connections to Cairo, Jeddah, Pakistan, India, Moscow, and Prague. "We are in ongoing negotiations with more international carriers to increase connectivity to Ras Al Khaimah," Sheikh Salem said, noting a spike in demand from European markets ahead of new luxury developments. RAK Airport records 332,280 passengers According to recent open data, Ras Al Khaimah International Airport recorded 332,280 passengers in the first four months of 2025. It includes 164,691 arrivals, 144,045 departures, and 23,544 transit passengers. April posted the highest number of arrivals (46,841), and January saw the most transit activity (1446). In 2024, the airport saw a 28 per cent increase in arrivals compared to the previous year, bringing in more than 661,000 passengers, nearly double the 2022 figures. The surge is mainly attributed to improved flight connectivity and increased interest in the Emirates as a tourism destination. The airport aims to serve up to 3 million travellers in the coming years. "This is not just an expansion; it's a game-changer for Ras Al Khaimah. The airport will soon be a central gateway, connecting the world to the emirate's mountains, beaches, and luxury resorts," Sheikh Salem concluded.

UK's market for million-pound homes doubles

The number of homes for sale across Britain with an asking price of £1 million or more has doubled in the past six years. Many seaside locations became a 'race for space' among homebuyers during the coronavirus pandemic, but London still has the largest number of homes in that price bracket of any region, with Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea and Wandsworth topping the list collated by property site Rightmove. It recorded a 103 per cent increase in homes at this price point. In commuter belt locations such as St Albans, Windsor and Maidenhead, Three Rivers and Waverley, about one in every five homes for sale now has a £1 million price tag. The London Borough of Richmond became the latest area to reach the threshold for the first time, with average asking prices between January and April this year standing at £1,006,981. Cornwall posted the biggest increase in that period, rising 246 per cent. The number of areas outside London with a £1 million average rose from 30 to 66 after the pandemic, with just over five per cent now asking for seven figures compared with three per cent in 2019. Mole Valley in Surrey emerged as the area which is increasingly becoming a million-pound market. More than a fifth (22 per cent) of homes for sale in towns such as Dorking and Leatherhead were priced at more than £1 million, an increase of 12 per cent in six years. Colleen Babcock, a Rightmove property expert, described the surge in prices as 'substantial'. 'Since 2019, we've seen the number of million-pound homes for sale double. This isn't just happening in London; places like Cornwall, Uttlesford, and Somerset are also seeing big jumps in the number of high-value properties. 'The number of areas outside of London where the average price is a million pounds or more has also more than doubled, showing that the million-pound mark is becoming more common in various locations.' Local areas included in Rightmove's research were those with at least 10 or more homes for sale during the time periods analysed. Meanwhile, the annual rate of house price growth halved as a stamp duty holiday ended, according to Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures. The average UK house price increased by 3.5 per cent in the 12 months to April, halving from 7.0 per cent annual growth recorded in March this year. Stamp duty discounts became less generous for some home buyers from April. Stamp duty applies in England and Northern Ireland. Average house prices increased to £286,000 (3.0 per cent annual growth) in England, £210,000 (5.3 per cent) in Wales, and £191,000 (5.8 per cent) in Scotland in the 12 months to April 2025. The average house price for Northern Ireland was £185,000 in the first quarter of 2025 – a 9.5 per cent increase annually. Tom Bill, head of UK residential research at Knight Frank, said: 'The UK housing market is still in recovery mode after the stamp duty cliff edge in April but prices are being kept firmly in check by an overhang of supply. 'We don't expect a rate cut before August but the weak state of the UK economy is putting downwards pressure on mortgage rates, which should support demand in the short-term.' Kevin Roberts, managing director, mortgage services, at L & G, highlighted a recent wave of innovative mortgage products. 'Our broker data shows that first-time buyers are particularly active, accounting for nearly 60 per cent of purchases since the start of the year.'
