ATLANTA, April 28, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Boys & Girls Clubs of America, one of the nation's leading youth-serving organizations, confirms baseball legend, businessman and FOX MLB Analyst Alex Rodriguez, and FOX Sports CEO and Executive Producer, Eric Shanks, will serve as co-chairs for its 2025 'National Youth of the Year' event.
The Youth of the Year program, a cornerstone of Boys & Girls Clubs of America for over 75 years, celebrates the remarkable achievements of teens nationwide. These inspiring young people are recognized for their exceptional leadership, service, academic excellence, and dedication to healthy living – it is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can achieve. In 2024, Youth of the Year participants contributed nearly 73,000 volunteer hours in their communities, and they excel in school, with an average GPA of 3.7.
Each year during a star-studded celebration event, one outstanding young person—selected from a group of regional and military Youth of the Year leaders—is named National Youth of the Year, representing millions of Club kids across the country.
As co-chairs of the National Youth of the Year leadership committee, Rodriguez and Shanks will collaborate with business and community leaders, professionals, and philanthropists to elevate the celebration, expand its impact, and raise crucial funds to support life-changing programs at Boys & Girls Clubs.

Both Rodriguez and Shanks are inductees of Boys & Girls Clubs of America's Alumni Hall of Fame, having attended Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade (Florida) and Terre Haute Boys & Girls Club (Indiana) as youth, respectively. Shanks has served on Boys & Girls Clubs of America's Board of Governors since 2015, chairing the Pacific region until 2020. Rodriguez sits on the Board of Directors for Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade and joined Boys & Girls Clubs of America's Board of Governors in 2020. Since then, he has been an influential advisor on marketing efforts and has personally invested over $1 million in the organization's mission.

It initially looked like only a minor trade for a depth catcher who would compete to be the backup catcher on the 2025 Opening Day roster. Narváez not only won a spot on the Opening Day roster, but he's now overtaken Connor Wong as Boston's starting catcher. The 26-year-old is hitting .288 with a .356 on-base percentage, .456 slugging percentage, .812 OPS, five home runs, 12 doubles, 19 RBIs, 24 runs, 17 walks and 43 strikeouts in 47 games (177 plate appearances). Advertisement He's also been one of the league's top defenders behind the plate. He's in the 97th percentile in blocks above average (6), 94th percentile in framing (4) and 81st percentile in caught stealing above average (2). It looks like the Yankees also did well in the trade. Rodriguez-Cruz, a 21-year-old righty who reaches the upper-90s with his fastball, has made nine starts for High-A Hudson Valley this season. He is 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 57 strikeouts and 22 walks in 48 innings. He's held opponents to a .177 batting average. Lefties are batting .140 against him while righties are hitting .213. He had 19 swings and misses in a game April 25 against Asheville, leading all High-A pitchers in whiffs that day. He had 17 in a start against Wilmington on April 18. Advertisement Boston initially drafted Rodriguez-Cruz in the fourth round (105th overall) out of Leadership Christian in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Baseball America ranked him the Yankees' No. 16 overall prospect entering 2025. Narváez said Wednesday, 'Super proud to wear this uniform now with Boston. At the same time, I always say that I'm super thankful for what they (the Yankees) did for me. I grew up with them. It was nine years with them. Two Texas Longhorns earn spots on Perfect Game's Freshman All-American Team Longhorns stars Adrian Rodriguez and Dylan Volantis earn special honors During the 2025 campaign, Texas Longhorns baseball got contributions from everyone on the roster. While they were mainly led by upperclassmen, two freshmen, Adrian Rodriguez and Dylan Volantis, made their mark. The talented duo added to their trophy cases this week, earning Perfect Game Freshman All-America honors. In their freshman seasons, Rodriguez and Volantis showed they can be key pieces going forward. Volantis shined on the mound, while Rodriguez was a hits machine and welcoming source of consistency. With Volantis in the bullpen, Texas had one of the best relievers in the country. The California native posted a 1.94 ERA in 51 innings while striking out 74 batters. He also etched himself into the record books with 11 saves in conference play, tied for the most in SEC history. Due to his stellar play, he was named the National Freshman Pitcher of the Year by the Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. As Volantis excelled on the mound, Rodriguez was a human highlight reel with the bat. He finished the 2025 campaign with a .313 batting average and 23 RBI. He also showed off his speed with 15 stolen bases, tied for the team lead. The Flower Mound High school product also provided value with his versatility. He saw time at third base, designated hitter and got some reps in the outfield. That allowed the Longhorns to get his bat in the lineup, often in a tough SEC conference. Regardless of the position or opponent, Rodriguez was one of the Longhorns' best players. Volantis and Rodriguez also helped the Longhorns join unique company. They were one of three programs with multiple selections to Perfect Game's Freshman All-America team. While expectations will be higher next year, the Longhorns' future is bright, with Volantis and Rodriguez leading the way.

Towne Mall site receives $2.5M for cleanup and remediation
Jun. 11—The former Towne Mall site in Middletown has received a $2.5 million boost from the Ohio Department of Development for cleanup and remediation in preparation for a substantial redevelopment project. The grant was requested by the Warren County Port Authority on behalf of the city of Middletown. The project will abate asbestos-containing materials and demolish multiple unsafe structures, according to ODOD, and the 32-acre site will be prepared for commercial and light industrial redevelopment. It is likely the majority of Towne Mall owned by the city will be demolished and redeveloped into a new structure or structures, according to Luis Rodriguez, assistant director of community and economic development for the city. Part of the redevelopment plan includes keeping Planet Fitness as a tenant, though the location of the gym could move to another spot on the site in a new structure, according to Rodriguez. An estimated 500 jobs are expected for when the redevelopment is complete at Towne Mall and adjacent businesses. The start date for the project has not been finalized. The city is in negotiations on a preliminary development plan with Midland Atlantic Properties for redevelopment. Rodriguez said there is "nothing set in stone," but the city is "optimistic." City council approved the issuance of $7.9 million in 30-year bonds to fund part of the acquisition cost in its June 3 meeting. The bonds will cover a bond anticipation note, or BAN, issued last August to fund the acquisition on a temporary basis. The previous BAN was approximately $7.5 million. The new amount of $7.9 million "reflects the rolling over of outstanding interest," according to a city staff report. The BANs are meant to be a "temporary situation as the city works to execute a final development agreement for the site that will pay off most or all of the outstanding debt." Most recently, Middletown hosted a Towne Mall liquidation auction, featuring items that were left in stores when the city bought the 380,000-square-foot site in July 2024 for $10 million. Purchasing the mall was part of an effort to guide what goes on the land in the middle of surging Interstate 75 development. Since then, Middletown has hosted a Town Hall at the Towne Mall, which was attended by approximately 80 people; a city council strategic work session; and a request for qualifications, or RFQ, presentation — all with the purpose of redeveloping the site and listening to what the community wants. A total of $57.7 million for 34 cleanup/remediation projects was announced alongside the $2.5 million for the Towne Mall site as part of the 10th round of funding since the Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program was created in 2021. "Over the years, we've helped transform hundreds of unsafe, blighted and abandoned sites into new centers of opportunity across Ohio," said Governor Mike DeWine. "Through this program, we're building stronger, safer neighborhoods and turning yesterday's liabilities into tomorrow's assets."
