MIAMI - After Lionel Messi lit up the Club World Cup opener, Miami's Hard Rock Stadium was awash in Argentine passion again as Boca Juniors fans turned it into a little Buenos Aires for their team's 2-2 draw with Benfica on Monday.
A day after draping the shores of Miami Beach in blue and gold on the eve of their team's debut, the Boca fans chanted their way into the arena and through the game, which put them in second place in Group C behind Bayern Munich after the German champions demolished Auckland City 10-0 on Sunday.
Both teams finished with 10 men after Benfica's Andrea Bellotti and Boca's Nicolas Figal picked up straight red cards in a heated contest that saw the Portuguese team cancel out a two-goal deficit.
Boca next face Bayern on Friday in Miami while Benfica will face Auckland City in Orlando, FL.
After a scrappy opening 20 minutes, the stands trembled when Boca went ahead in the 21st as Lautaro Blanco's low cross was met by Miguel Merentiel, triggering wild celebrations.
Six minutes later, the Argentine side doubled the tally with a Rodrigo Battaglia header, stunning Benfica, who had been dominating from the onset.
Nicolas Otamendi was then brought down in the box and Benfica earned a penalty following a VAR review and Di Maria coolly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to cut the goal deficit down to one at the stroke of halftime.
Benfica were down to 10 in the 70th after Bellotti was shown a straight red card for a high kick in the back of the head of Ayrton Costa.
The Portuguese side, however, levelled six minutes from time when Otamendi found the back of the net with a powerful header.
The result kept the six-time Copa Libertadores champions' hopes alive to advance into the knockout phase, which would be a boost for the tournament as South American fans are expected to bring the biggest amount of passion into the stadiums. REUTERS

Nielsen projecting women's football's fan base to reach top-five of global sports

The global broadcast audience is also expected to rise by 30 per cent across major tournaments by 2030. PHOTO: REUTERS LONDON – Women's football is set to become one of the world's top five sports by 2030, according to a report by Nielsen Sports in collaboration with PepsiCo, with a global fan base projected to grow by 38 per cent to reach more than 800 million people. Some 60 per cent of those fans are projected to be women, according to their report 'Undervalued to Unstoppable' released on June 17, creating one of the few sports which is followed by more females than males. The global broadcast audience is also expected to rise by 30 per cent across major tournaments by 2030. While sponsorship deals tripled for the 2023 Women's World Cup from the 2019 tournament, only a small fraction of global sponsorship budgets are allocated to women's football, according to the study. It presents a significant opportunity, the researchers argued, considering women are projected to drive over 75 per cent of household purchasing decisions by 2028. 'We have long believed in the potential of women's football, and today, we're no longer just tracking progress, we're witnessing a breakthrough,' said Samantha Lamberti, managing director of Nielsen Sports International. 'From media rights to sponsorship and fan engagement, this is no longer a case of future promise but present value.' Women's football is already one of the top 10 most followed sports globally, and momentum appears to be building. Viewership of the U.S.-based National Women's Soccer League championship last year had an 18 per cent increase over the previous year. Disney+ announced last month a deal to broadcast Women's Champions League matches across Europe, while Alexis Ohanian, the Reddit co-founder and husband of tennis great Serena Williams, acquired a stake in Women's Super League champions Chelsea that same month. Deloitte recently reported that WSL revenues climbed by 34 per cent during a record-breaking 2023-24 season, and are forecasting WSL clubs' total revenue will reach a record £100 million in the 2025-26 season. WSL attendance, however, has dropped after it peaked in 2023-24 on the heels of the 2023 Women's World Cup, but is expected to have another rise after the European Championship next month in Switzerland. Nielsen reported a surge in interest around major tournaments. Switzerland grew its women's football fan base by 22 per cent in 2024 ahead of the Euros, while interest in the UK rose 15 per cent over the two years after England's victory at Euro 2022. Women's football has enjoyed a 60 per cent rise in female fans over the past five years, according to Nielsen, with momentum strongest in China, with 186 million new fans over that period, Brazil, and India. Growth in participation echoed the increase in interest, with China seeing a 300 per cent rise. Participation has also climbed in Europe, with France – with a 150 per cent jump – Spain (95 per cent), the Netherlands (25 per cent) and the UK (24 per cent) seeing the highest increases since 2019. Flamengo's impressive Club World Cup start sets up mouth-watering Chelsea showdown

Mandatory Credit: Dale Zanine-Imagn Images/File Photo REUTERS PHILADELPHIA - Flamengo's dominant 2-0 victory over Esperance de Tunis on Monday will have caught the attention of Group D favourites Chelsea, and suggests the Brazilian side could have a significant impact at FIFA's revamped tournament. The Brazilian Cup champions next face Chelsea, who beat MLS side LAFC 2-0 earlier in the day, in a mouth-watering clash at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field on Friday that should determine the group winner. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT: It has been over a decade since a European team lost at the Club World Cup but the ease with which Flamengo dispensed with Esperance will give them confidence they can end that run when they face Chelsea on Friday. The London side were the last European team to taste defeat at the tournament, losing to Corinthians in the 2012 final, but since then the continent's clubs are undefeated in 27 matches. Palmeiras and Boca Juniors came close to wins over Porto and Benfica in their openers at the current edition, and South American sides have six games left against European opposition in the group stage to break their stranglehold. Flamengo are unbeaten in over a month and lead the Brazilian league playing a solid brand of football under the calm guidance of former Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis. KEY QUOTES: Flamengo midfielder Jorginho: "We enjoyed the goal, and the fans were amazing, as I've seen before but now I'm living it. The most important thing is the performance that we did. I think we controlled the game, we played well and we deserved the win, I think that was the most important thing for us. "It felt really good, because we have great players who understand the game, I feel that we can understand each other very quickly, and it's going to be a good bond with the group and everything, so we just need to keep working together and move forward." Flamengo manager Filipe Luis: "At the beginning we managed to control the game with possession, then after the first goal we slowed down a bit and that cost us a bit of time with the ball. But in the second half we managed to score the second goal and a great win, three points. Now we have to face the next chapter for this group, Chelsea is a difficult team, but very happy with the win." REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Rory McIlroy first to qualify for Team Europe at Ryder Cup

Rory McIlroy plays his shot from the 12th tee during the final round of the US Open. PHOTO: REUTERS LONDON – Rory McIlroy became the first player to qualify for Europe for the 2025 Ryder Cup, the team announced on June 16, with the Masters champion set to make his eighth consecutive appearance in the biennial event. The Northern Irishman sealed his spot through the European Points List, a qualification pathway based on performances in DP World Tour and co-sanctioned events, as he has enjoyed four victories so far since last August. "It's always a huge honour to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup, so it means a great deal to have qualified for my eighth in a row and to be part of Luke's team again at Bethpage," McIlroy said. "Winning a Ryder Cup away from home is one of the biggest challenges there is in golf. We know it is going to be tough in New York, but we are all looking forward to that challenge in September and the opportunity to potentially do something special." The 2025 Ryder Cup will be held at Bethpage Black in New York from Sept 26–28, with European captain Luke Donald set to round out his 12-man squad later this year through six automatic qualifiers and six captain's picks. The 35-year-old McIlroy completed a long-sought career Grand Slam at Augusta National in April, on top of victories at the Dubai DP World Tour Championship in November, the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and The Players Championship. A top-20 finish at the US Open over the weekend was enough to mathematically guarantee his place on the team. The veteran has been a Ryder Cup mainstay since his debut in 2010, helping Europe to five victories in seven appearances. Meanwhile, US Open winner J.J. Spaun jumped to No. 8 in the Official World Golf Rankings released on June 16, a meteoric rise from 109th to begin the season. Spaun began last week ranked 28th in the OWGR before he scored a two-stroke victory over Robert MacIntyre of Scotland with consecutive birdies in his final round at Oakmont Country Club on June 15 to win the US Open. Spaun, 34, has five career victories and held the 54-hole lead at the Sony Open and Players Championship earlier this year. He found the water on the island hole, No. 17, at TPC Sawgrass and lost a three-hole playoff to McIlroy at The Players. The US Open was his first win since the 2022 Valero Open and put him ahead of the six players ahead of him in the OWGR in earnings this season (US$9.644 million). Only No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (US$15.174 million) and No. 2 McIlroy (US$14.221 million) have taken home more this season. Americans Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas and Russell Henley occupy the No. 3-6 spots and Sepp Straka is seventh.
