Dumfries and Galloway mum encourages people to sign up for further education bursary

A Wigtownshire mum is encouraging people to sign up for a bursary that helps people study at university and college.
Jodie Thomson is one of nearly 500 people who have benefited from Wheatley Group's bursary scheme.
The programme is run by the social housing landlord's charitable trust, Wheatley Foundation, and offers bursaries of up to £1,500 a year for full-time students. part time students can receive up to £750.
Jodie, who lives in a Wheatley Homes South property in Wigtownshire with her husband and three children, is about to complete an HNC in Childhood Practice through Dumfries and Galloway.
The 37-year-old said: 'After being a stay-at-home mum, I helped out at my son's nursery and then decided to go to college to complete this course.
'I wasn't sure how we would manage, but the bursary was a great help. It helped me provide for my family while I was studying.'
The Wheatley Foundation's bursary programme is open to tenants in Wheatley Homes properties in Dumfries and Galloway and will help ease the financial burden on customers facing the expense of studying.
Chair of Wheatley Foundation, Professor Paddy Gray OBE, said: 'Since 2016, the scheme has helped 482 people to go on to further education and get the qualifications they need.

The good news is that a spell of hot weather is ahead for Wales in the second half of next week. The bad news is it could be accompanied by thunderstorms and showers. The Met Office's long range forecast for Monday June 9 to Wednesday, June 18 predicts "changeable weather" across Wales and the UK. It expects at the start of next week, we will experience showers or some longer spells of rain spreading in from the Atlantic. The heaviest and most prolonged rain, it says, will probably be across parts of the north and northwest, with the southeast likely driest. The forecast adds: "Temperatures are expected to be near normal or slightly below. "Into the second half of next week, there is potential for some warm or hot weather to develop. Article continues below "Particularly in the south and east, although this may be accompanied by heavy showers and thunderstorms. "Into the middle of June, high pressure may become more dominant. "This could bring periods of fine and dry weather, especially in south and temperatures rising above normal." Looking even further ahead for Thursday, June 19 to Thursday, July 3, the forecast reads: "Mid-June will probably see a good deal of dry weather across the UK. "High pressure will tend to dominate, especially in the south. 'Drug trafficker' Francis Coggins snared in the Netherlands amid National Crime Agency probe
The 60-year-old was detained in the Netherlands. Alleged international drug smuggle r Francis Coggins has been arrested in Europe. He was detained in a Dutch coastal town amid a National Crime Agency probe. The 60-year-old was snared by officers from the Dutch National Police force outside a residential property in Zandvoort yesterday, Tuesday, June 3, 2025. He was taken into custody after ongoing work between the National Crime Agency (NCA), the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit (NWROCU) and the Dutch National Police. Coggins, of Stockbridge Village, Merseyside, was wanted by the NWROCU on a trade and cooperation agreement warrant for allegedly smuggling heroin and cocaine. He appeared at court in Amsterdam today to begin the process of extradition to the UK and he was remanded to appear again on a date to be confirmed. Detective superintendent Zoe Russo from the NWROCU said: "This arrest demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that individuals wanted for serious offences, whether in the UK or abroad, are brought to justice. "We work closely with international law enforcement partners to track down and apprehend fugitives, no matter where they try to hide. The message is clear: if you are wanted, we will find you." Gill Duggan, head of Europe at the NCA said: " The agency has been working extensively with the ROCU and our international partners to trace Coggins and return him to the UK. "It does not matter where fugitives go. The agency's reach and strong relationships with international partners mean we will always tenaciously pursue those wanted by law enforcement." Coggins' brother Vincent, known as "the headmaster" to signify his role at the top of the Huyton Firm organised crime group, was jailed and convicted as part of the NWROCU's probe codenamed "Operation SubZero". Liverpool Echo reports that the arrests of many members of the organised crime syndicate resulted in some of the first EncroChat convictions in the UK.
