BUENOS AIRES - Argentine forward Angel Di Maria will return to his homeland to play for his boyhood club Rosario Central, the Argentine Primera Division club announced on May 29.
"Our history together has more pages to write. Welcome home," the Rosario-based club said alongside a video posted on X.
The 37-year-old Di Maria, who retired from international football in 2024, began his career at Rosario Central in 2005 before joining Benfica in 2007.
He then moved to Spanish giants Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris St Germain, and Juventus, before rejoining Benfica again in 2023.
Di Maria won 30 titles during his time in Europe, along with six international honours with Argentina, including two Copa America titles, the 2022 World Cup and the 2008 Olympic Games.
The winger will join Rosario Central after Benfica's participation in next month's Club World Cup in the United States, where the Portuguese club are in Group C alongside Bayern Munich, Boca Juniors and Auckland City. REUTERS

Real's LaLiga rivals Barcelona are third, valued at $5.65 billion, while Liverpool and Manchester City are fourth and fifth. Forbes named six Premier League sides among the top 10 most valuable teams with Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea making the list after Bayern Munich and Paris St Germain. "Together, the 30 most valuable soccer teams are worth more than $72 billion, or an average of $2.4 billion, up 5% from 2024's record $2.26 billion," Forbes said. The world No. 1 delivered a dominant display of power-hitting as he beat his opponent 6-0, 6-1, 6-2. The 23-year-old will next meet 17th seed Andrey Rublev in the last 16, after the Russian was given a bye through the third round following Frenchman Arthur Fils' withdrawal due to injury. 'This morning I said to my team I'm feeling well and physically ready,' said Sinner. 'We had to go very hard in the beginning. Because I feel like the start of Slams are very important... which then gives you the confidence to keep going. 'I warmed up very well. I felt very good. After 25 minutes I was feeling great. Just a relaxed morning. Tried to go on court with a good focus. My team is good, they give me the right tactics. It's a combination of also being happy on court.' Hurricanes shatter Moana dreams and send Blues into Super Rugby playoffs
SYDNEY - The Wellington Hurricanes shattered Moana Pasifika's dreams of a maiden Super Rugby Pacific playoff campaign with a crushing 64-12 victory on Saturday that sent the defending champion Auckland Blues into next week's quarter-finals instead. The Hurricanes cemented fourth place in the final standings and will travel to Canberra next Saturday to play the ACT Brumbies, while the Blues, who earlier beat the New South Wales Waratahs 46-6, will visit the table-topping Waikato Chiefs. In the other opening-round playoff, the 12-times champion Canterbury Crusaders will host the Queensland Reds, who conclude the regular season fixtures when they take on the Fijian Drua in Brisbane later on Saturday. Moana had hoped to be there too on the back of a breakout season but even redoubtable skipper Ardie Savea was unable to inspire them to the bonus-point victory they needed to edge out the Blues and claim the sixth and last playoff spot.
