AP PHOTOS: Statue of late Motorhead frontman Lemmy unveiled in English hometown
A decade after his death, Lemmy, the frontman of the legendary British heavy metal band Motorhead, will stand tall and proud in his hometown in the north of England.
Well, his statue will.
Inside the statue though will be some of Lemmy's ashes, so it will no doubt become a shrine for Motorhead's legion of fans around the world.
And indeed it was on Friday, as the statue to the hard-living Lemmy — real name Ian Kilmister — was unveiled in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent.
Black leather and denim jackets emblazoned with Lemmy's image were the norm for the day on a bright and sunny day in the northern English town. No wonder, many fans opted for a thirst-quencher at the local pub. There were even some Lemmy lookalikes.
Lemmy was the only continuous member of Motorhead, which he co-founded in 1975 after he was fired from another legendary rock band, Hawkwind, following a drug possession arrest at the Canadian border.
So he decided to go his own way and Motorhead helped pioneer heavy metal music in Britain — and around the world — with a string of high-octane albums, perhaps most memorably with 1980's 'Ace Of Spades.'
The statue was crafted by acclaimed local sculptor and lifelong Motorhead fan Andy Edwards — who is best-known for his statue of the Beatles on Liverpool's Pier Head. It captures Lemmy, who died from cancer in December 2015 at the age of 70, in his iconic pose with his bass guitar.
In December, following his will's instructions, another batch of Lemmy's ashes were installed in an urn shaped like his trademark cavalry hat at the Stringfellows gentlemen's club in London where he was 'a regular.'
That and Friday's ceremony are part of the 'Lemmy Forever!' movement, which sees the rocker enshrined in many of his favorite spots around the world.
Lemmy's legendary status was evident at his funeral, which saw rock heavyweights including The Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash and Metallica members Lars Ulrich and Robert Trujillo pay tribute.

The singer, 37, added that she's scheduled to undergo surgery after an appearance at a London music festival on June 15, at which time she plans to 'disappear for a bit.' In another post to her Instagram Stories, she confirmed she's known about the diagnosis for about nine weeks. 'Before 'No Secrets' came out, I was diagnosed with early breast cancer,' she said. 'I'm highlighting the word 'early.' Cancer sucks in any form, but I'm holding onto the word 'early.' 'I have been in and out of tests throughout this whole period,' she added. Jessie J, who was diagnosed with Ménière's disease in 2020, said she 'selfishly' decided to share her diagnosis with fans in part because she needed 'their love and support.' 'It breaks my heart that other people are going through so much similar, and worse. That's the bit that kills me,' she said. The 'Domino' singer did not go into detail about treatment or therapies but confirmed she would undergo surgery sometime after her appearance at the Capital Summertime Ball at London's Wembley Stadium on June 15. She indicated that at least part of her breast may be removed, remarking that she would get to 'keep my nipples.' 'It's a very dramatic way to get a boob job,' she joked. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 270,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the U.S., making it the second most common form of cancer among women after skin cancer. Roughly 42,000 people die from it every year. Treatment can include radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, surgery, or a combination of several treatments. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the five-year survival rate for patients with early-stage breast cancer — like the one Jessie J describes — are 99%. The survival rate drops for patients with later-stage cancers. The pop star, in a text post to Instagram Stories, said the diagnosis has given her 'incredible perspective.' 'But honestly, I need to process it and talk about it, and I need a hug. You have loved me through all my good and hard times,' Jessie J wrote. 'And I don't want this to be any different.' Many of her fellow artists and friends offered words of support in the wake of her video, including Katy Perry, Chelsea Handler and Rita Ora, the latter of whom called Jessie J 'my favorite person.' 'You've got this. My mother had it, and I know the surgery and any treatment on this matter is mentally tough, so I'm here for you,' Ora wrote.

Jessie J is doing away with the secrets — once and for all. The 37-year-old British singer took to Instagram on June 3 to reveal that she was diagnosed with early breast cancer prior to dropping her new song, 'No Secrets,' which was released on April 25. Her newest single, 'Living My Best Life,' was released three weeks later on May 16. In her announcement, Jessie J made sure to emphasize the term 'early.' 'Cancer sucks in any form, but I'm holding onto the word 'early,'' she said in the clip, adding that she's been 'in and out of tests' for the past few weeks and will be undergoing surgery soon. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer treatments are 'more effective and are better tolerated when started early.' In an attempt to keep the announcement light, Jessie J joked that she is 'getting to keep (her) nipples' and described her upcoming surgery as a 'very dramatic way to get a boob job.' 'I am going to disappear for a bit after Summertime Ball to have my surgery,' she said of the music festival she's performing at on June 15. 'And I will come back with massive (breasts) and more music.'
