Bombers sign veteran quarterback Chris Streveler to one-year contract
WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed quarterback Chris Streveler to a one-year contract, the CFL club announced Saturday.
Streveler appeared in 13 games last season before sustaining a knee injury in a 26-21 win over Saskatchewan on Sept. 7.
A short-yardage specialist, Streveler had 10 rushing touchdowns in 2024, tying Calgary's Tommy Stephens for the league lead.
He also made one start, helping lead the club to a 25-16 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on July 5 while starting quarterback Zach Collaros was out with a thorax injury.
Streveler finished the year throwing for 343 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
He is entering his fourth year with the Bombers. Streveler started 12 games in 2018 and 2019 with the Blue Bombers, helping the team win a Grey Cup in his second season. He returned to Winnipeg in 2024 after four seasons in the NFL.

Canada's Gabriel Diallo wins Libema Open for first ATP Tour title
'S-HERTOGENBOSCH - Gabriel Diallo has won his first ATP Tour title. The 23-year-old Montreal native defeated Belgium's Zizou Bergs 7-5, 7-6 (8) to win the Libema Open tennis tournament on Sunday. In what was a tight, back-and-forth second set, Diallo was down 6-4 in the tiebreaker before pulling victory from the jaws of defeat. He got three straight points from then on before eventually taking the win. Diallo had nine aces, won 76 per cent of his first-serve points and had 23 winners. He also broke on his lone opportunity, while saving his opponent's two break point chances. The six-foot-eight Diallo was the first Canadian men's singles finalist in event history. 10 Thoughts: Roughriders run game, kicking problems and more
Good teams find ways to win games and that's just what the Saskatchewan Roughriders did for a second straight week. After beating the Ottawa Redblacks 31-26 in Week 1 of the CFL season, the Roughriders improved to 2-0 with a 28-23 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday. While there were plenty of strong performances from the Roughriders, there were also some things that need cleaning up if the Green and White want to improve to 3-0 next week. Here are the top 10 takeaways from Saskatchewan's Week 2 performance: 1. Saskatchewan has the best, or at least most experienced, running back room in the CFL with veterans A.J. Ouellette and Ka'Deem Carey. With Carey getting into the lineup in his first week in town and Ouellette returning from a concussion, it was interesting to see what the workload would look like. Well, Ouellette looked like the free agent Saskatchewan sought with a 96-yard night including a 47-yard touchdown run while Carey chipped in with 26 rushing yards. If the Riders continue to use them both on a weekly basis, it's quite the two-headed monster. 2. The 25-yard punt return by Mario Alford in the second quarter, setting up Ouellette's touchdown run, could have been a loss of five. Alford, who also gave Saskatchewan great field position in their Week 1 matchup, continued to show his elusiveness in Week 2. His performance so far this season has quieted those people who wanted him to be cut in favour of rookie Drae McCray following training camp. 3. The 15-yard penalty called on Samuel Emilus in the first half was an absolutely atrocious call by the CFL officials. The Hamilton defender purposely ran into Emilus after the play, making helmet-to-helmet contact, before Emilus brushed him away with a gentle backhand to the helmet. Sure, you want to get rid of after-the-play stuff but come on. The penalty, if there was one to be called, should have gone the other way. 4. The Roughriders offensive line looks to be a strong suit for the team this year despite having deployed different lineups in back-to-back weeks. After not allowing a sack last game, the Riders offensive line only allowed one sack on Trevor Harris on Saturday. Also, have we ever seen a CFL team start two American guards and a Canadian left tackle along the offensive line? Canadian rookie Daniel Johnson made his first career CFL start and aside from giving up a sack in the third quarter, looked like he belongs. Starting Canadian left tackles are a rarity as much as two starting American guards. 5. While Brett Lauther came into the game having made 23 straight field goals, he missed on three of his five attempts on Saturday night. Lauther was not able to kick during practice this week after the Riders were forced inside due to the smoky conditions in Regina. Plus, he's adjusting to a new holder this year in rookie punter Joe Couch. I don't want to make excuses for him but one bad game isn't cause for concern. Look at what he did last year after missing four field goals in Week 11 against Montreal. He made 28 of his next 29 kicks to end the season. It also didn't cost the Riders a victory. 6. Did you notice the Canadian flag graphic on individual players during the TSN broadcast when they pulled up the starting rosters? I wonder if they read last week's Roughriders Mailbag when a reader, Fred Clipsham, brought this idea up. It's a nice touch. 7. After giving up 413 passing yards last week against the Ottawa Redblacks, it was almost assumed Bo Levi Mitchell would get over the 300-yard mark against Saskatchewan's defence on Saturday. Mitchell completed his first 12 passes and was 15-of-19 for 167 yards in the first half before ending the night with 336 passing yards. Considering how well Saskatchewan's defence is against the run (51 rushing yards allowed Saturday), their zone passing defence continues to be exploited. But as long as they're making big plays when they need them, the system seems to be effective. 8. After registering 10 tackles and sack last week against the Ottawa Redblacks, Roughriders middle linebacker Jameer Thurman had five tackles and another sack against the Ti-Cats. As good as Saskatchewan's defensive line and secondary are, Thurman might be the most important piece of the defence. But let's not forget about halfback Rolan Milligan, who after leaving Saskatchewan's opening game with a concussion, intercepted Mitchell and returned it 64 yards for his first career touchdown. Both are on their way to second straight all-star seasons. 9. Harris completed passes to seven players on Saturday with KeeSean Johnson leading the way with eight catches for 124 yards and a touchdown as he registered his third career 100-yard game after notching 101 yards and 103 yards in Week 17 and 18 last season respectively. With Kian Schaffer-Baker on the injured list and Samuel Emilus finishing the game on the sideline, Johnson put together a big performance and the former NFLer should continue to do so on a weekly basis regardless of who is in the lineup for Saskatchewan. 10. And lastly, what constitutes a 'potential scoring play'? Early in the fourth quarter, when Tiger-Cats receiver Kenny Lawler hauled in a deep pass before knocking over the end-zone pylon, Hamilton's offence ran another play, which resulted in a touchdown. There was then some confusion as Roughriders head coach Corey Mace had already thrown his challenge flag prior to the touchdown plunge. The play went back to a review via challenge. Was the catch by Lawler a 'potential scoring play' since he was so close to the end zone? It didn't appear to be the case but when it's that close, shouldn't it? Roughriders close out 28-23 victory over Tiger-Cats to improve to 2-0
For a second straight week, the Saskatchewan Roughriders were able to close out a victory in the final minute. On Saturday night, the Roughriders improved to 2-0 on the CFL season with a 28-23 road victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who dropped to 0-2. After shutting down the Ottawa Redblacks late in the fourth quarter of their Week 1 victory, the Roughriders were able to do the same on Saturday night in Hamilton as the defence forced a turnover on downs in the last minute to secure the win. Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris completed 26-of-37 passes for 295 yards with one touchdown and one interception. KeeSean Johnson led the Riders in receiving with 124 yards on eight catches and a touchdown reception while running back A.J. Ouellette gained 96 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Newly signed running back Ka'Deem Carey had 26 rushing yards on four attempts while also registering one catch for nine yards. While Tiger-Cats quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 336 yards and a touchdown. with Kenny Lawler (eight catches, 162 yards) being his favourite target, the Roughriders were able to score points off Mitchell as halfback Rolan Milligan found the end zone with a pick six in the third quarter. Linebackers Jameer Thurman and C.J. Reavis both sacked Mitchell in the contest. As much as Saskatchewan's offence was clicking on Saturday, the Green and White left points on the board as kicker Brett Lauther missed three of his five field goal attempts and one convert attempt. However, the 10 missed points didn't make a difference as Saskatchewan's defence was able to force a late turnover on downs in the final minute of play to secure the victory. On Saskatchewan's first drive of the game, the Roughriders were moving the ball before Harris was intercepted by Hamilton's Jonathan Moxey. The Tiger-Cats proceeded to put together an 11-play, 74-yard drive capped off by Mitchell finding Tim White for a nine-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0 Hamilton with the convert. In the second quarter, after a 13-play, 64-yard drive, Saskatchewan was forced to attempt a field goal, but Lauther was wide on his 51-yard attempt, snapping his streak of 23 straight field goals made dating back to last season. After Saskatchewan's defence forced a quick two-and-out, returner Mario Alford gave the Roughriders good field position with a 25-yard punt return. From there, Ouellette took a handoff and sprinted 47 yards into the end zone to give the Riders their touchdown of the game. Lauther missed the convert as Hamilton stayed on top 7-6. Before the first half was up, the Roughriders used the final few seconds of the half to get Lauther into field goal range before he was wide on a 50-yard attempt. In the second half, Saskatchewan's defence was able to put points on the board as Milligan, last year's top defensive player, intercepted Mitchell and returned it 64 yards to the end zone. A successful two-point convert attempt made it 14-7 Riders. Hamilton added a field goal to make it 14-10 midway the third quarter before Lauther split the uprights from 25 yards out to restore Saskatchewan's seven-point lead. At the start of the fourth quarter, after bobbling the snap, Mitchell found Lawler for a 39-yard gain to get the Ti-Cats to the one-yard line before Ante Litre plunged in for the touchdown to tie the game 17-17. Hoping to respond to that scoring drive, Roughriders receiver Dohnte Meyers made a 22-yard diving catch before Johnson almost hauled in a deep touchdown pass. The Roughriders were forced to settle for a field goal as Lauther was good from 40 yards out to make it 20-17 for Saskatchewan. With the three points, Lauther reached 1,000 points in his career in his 100th game as a Roughrider. The back-and-forth game continued as Mitchell found Lawler for a 42-yard gain before the Tiger-Cats tied the game with a field goal of their own from 32 yards to make it 20-20 with ten minutes left. On Saskatchewan's next drive, Harris and Johnson connected for four first-down catches in a span of five plays before the duo connected on a 15-yard touchdown pass as the Riders took the 27-20 lead with seven minutes to go. The Tiger-Cats tacked on another field goal to make it 27-23 with 4:19 to go before Saskatchewan put together an eight-play, 49-yard drive to get into scoring range but Lauther missed his third field goal of the night from 29 yards out at it remained a five-point game. With less than a minute left, the Ti-Cats generated a first down but the Roughriders were able to stuff Hamilton on three straight plays, with linebacker A.J. Allen making a crucial stop on third down to seal the victory for Saskatchewan. The Roughriders (2-0) get set for a second straight East Division road game as the Green and White will visit the Toronto Argonauts on Friday in Week 3 of the CFL season.
