The World Travel & Tourism Council ( WTTC ) is forecasting a 'record-breaking' year for India 's travel and tourism sector this year, with its economic contribution set to reach over Rs 22 trillion in 2025, whilst employment in the sector is expected to reach more than 48 million.International visitor spend is expected to reach Rs 3.2 trillion, whilst spending from domestic travellers is set to hit Rs 16 trillion.WTTC stated by 2035, travel and tourism's contribution to the national economy is forecast to almost double, to reach just under Rs 42 trillion, with the sector employing almost 64 million people.Data released Tuesday from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) released Tuesday stated that international visitor spends in India reached a record Rs 3.1 trillion in 2024, 9% above the previous peak of 2019.According to WTTC's latest Economic Impact Research (EIR), while domestic travel has remained a 'vital force', with spending soaring to Rs 15.5 trillion, (22% above 2019 levels), the revival of international tourism is now propelling the sector into a 'bold' new era of growth.Travel and tourism contributed almost Rs 21 trillion to the Indian economy last year, 20% ahead of 2019 levels. The sector also supported an all-time high of almost 46.5 million jobs, equivalent to 9.1% of total employment across India. The country also welcomed 20 million international visitors in 2024 - 2.3 million more than 2019.But, while overall international visitor numbers went up considerably last year, as per WTTC research, the numbers and the growth compared to pre pandemic levels seems to have been driven considerably by visits by non-resident Indians. As per data released by the ministry of tourism, India received more than 9.65 million foreign tourists in calendar year 2024, rising 1.4% from 9.52 million in 2023 but declining 11.6% from 10.93 million in 2019.WTTC said it calls for continued investment and targeted policy support, and would urge the government to reconsider its recent decision to reduce funding for overseas tourism promotion.'India's Travel & Tourism sector is experiencing unprecedented growth, with international visitor numbers now at record highs after a period of strong domestic reliance. We strongly support the government's plans to simplify the e-visa process. Making it easier to visit India is one of the fastest ways to unlock further international arrivals and spending,' said Julia Simpson, WTTC President and CEO. "While visa on arrival and e visa systems are in place, reciprocal policies and long delays for key markets like the US, where appointments are reportedly unavailable until 2026 continue to hinder tourists," she added. The global tourism body's research also reveals India's business travel is experiencing record growth, with combined domestic and international spending hitting Rs 1.1 trillion last year, surpassing the 2019 peak by 2.6%.The council said India is 'well-placed' to become one of the world's most dynamic tourism economies, with its dynamic mix of heritage, natural beauty, and modern innovation, and that it calls on the government to match the sector's resilience and ambition with 'clear', 'consistent' policy support.

Ola Electric's founder Bhavish Aggarwal pays ₹20 crore to top up collateral as shares slide
Bhavish Aggarwal, founder and chief executive officer of Ola Electric Mobility Ltd., paid about 200 million rupees ($2.3 million) in cash to top up collateral for borrowings against shares, according to people with knowledge of the matter, as the stock slid on poor sales. Aggarwal had raised 2.5 billion rupees for his generative AI venture Krutrim Data Center Pvt. by pledging Ola Electric equity and he voluntarily put in the extra money since March as the shares dipped below 50 rupees each, the people said, asking not to be identified as the details are private. No margin calls were triggered and the value of the stock collateral is more than twice the borrowed amount, they added. Investors are closely watching SoftBank Group Corp.-backed Ola Electric, whose shares have fallen about 35% since it listed at 76 rupees in August. Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp. cut their stakes in the company in recent days after the Indian e-scooter firm said quarterly losses have more than doubled amid regulatory and governance concerns. Aggarwal has pledged or encumbered about 8% of his 30% Ola Electric stake, according to exchange data. Avendus Group, InCred Alternative Investments Pvt. and Modulus Alternatives Investment Managers had lent him the money in exchange for bonds issued by Krutrim, carrying coupon rates of around 14.9%-15.9% and backed by Ola Electric shares, according to data published by Bloomberg and one of the people. Avendus and InCred declined to comment. Modulus didn't immediately respond to Bloomberg's email seeking comment. A representative for Ola Electric said all founder pledges have been disclosed and there are no more material developments; it declined to comment on what it said were 'speculative' reports. As the value of the Ola Electric shares dipped, Aggarwal pre-funded 3-4 months of accrued interest instead of topping up the collateral with more shares, one of the people said. Aggarwal earned some 2.8 billion rupees having sold a portion of his Ola Electric stake in the IPO.

Building Pune: How a proposed 25-km flyover can ease traffic congestion on Pune-Solapur highway
The Maharashtra government has decided to address traffic congestion on the Pune-Solapur highway by constructing a 25-km flyover from Hadapsar to Yavat, according to officials. The project will be implemented by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC). In a recent resolution, the government announced that the elevated route from Hadapsar to Yavat on National Highway 65, between Pune and Solapur, will be developed to address traffic issues. 'Traffic jams are witnessed on the existing highway. The route is important for Pune and Solapur district to transport agricultural products, industrial goods and for other commercial purposes,' said Pradnya Walke, a Deputy Secretary in the state government. The 25-km six-lane flyover will be constructed from Hadapsar to Yavat on the existing highway, which will also be expanded to six lanes underneath. Also, a 6.5-km stretch of the highway from Yavat to Solapur will be expanded to six lanes. 'The estimated project cost is Rs 5,262.36 crore, which will be implemented on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis. The state government will impose a toll on all vehicles once the project opens for public use,' said an MSIDC officer. The toll will only be collected through FastTag, GPS, or other advanced technology systems as specified by the MSIDC. He added that the state government will review the toll rates every three years. The state government will provide funds for existing highway expansion only, and the remaining work will be done through a public-private partnership. If the proposed flyover has to be diverted due to the proposed Pune Metro rail line, then the MSIDC will have to seek permission from the state government. The proposed flyover on the Pune-Solapur highway is similar to the proposed Wagholi-Shirur flyover on the Pune-Ahmednagar highway and the greenfield project between Pune and Aurangabad. The state government aims to improve the traffic situation on highways while also reducing the impact at entry points and within the city of Pune. Plans are in place to divert heavy vehicles through a proposed ring road that will connect all highways passing through the city. The construction of the flyover from Wagholi to Shirur is expected to begin soon, while the missing link on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway is nearing completion. This missing link, which bypasses Lonavala on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, is expected to save passengers over half an hour in travel time and reduce fuel consumption for vehicles. "While the shorter end of the curve has outperformed, further gains may be limited without clearer signals from the RBI." Still, foreign investors, including Nomura, Standard Chartered Bank and BofA Securities, have suggested investing in the five-year part of the curve, noting that liquidity infusions from the central bank will bode well for shorter-duration bonds. The 2029 bond has remained among the five most traded papers over the last couple of months. Fund managers say that the focus may now shift to 10-year debt. "We expect benchmark 10-year bond yield to grind towards 6% level in the medium term," said Dhawal Dalal, president and CIO - fixed income at Edelweiss Asset Management. Dalal expects the repo rate to settle between 5.25% and 5.50%. Tata Asset Management's Nagarajan also expects the 10-year bond to outperform hereon, with the yield seen moving towards 6.10%. The 10-year yield has fallen by 39 bps since March, widening its spread over the five-year yield to 35 bps - the highest in three years.
