SA Rugby Criticises Sharks; Springboks Shine on Awards List
Springboks have the ideal problem of being inundated with rising stars, recently highlighted by the URC's Next-Gen Player of the Season Award list.
Of the sixteen nominees, six are South African, of which four have earned Springbok caps: Henco van Wyk, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Andre-Hugo Venter, Cameron Hanekom, Suleiman Hartzenberg, Andre-Hugo Venter, and Quan Horn.
Rassie Erasmus will undoubtedly be considering each player for the upcoming winter tests.
SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer views the proposed Club World Cup as a way of forcing 'SA teams to take the Champions Cup seriously,' suggesting his opinion to resemble a growing trend that South Africa's club contingent prioritise the URC.
Bulls, Sharks, and Stormers have become renowned for resting starting players for the Champions Cup, a tournament neither of the sides managed to eclipse five points after four games, albeit all qualifying for the URC knockout rounds, finishing second, third and fifth.
Springboks' Erasmus may like the thought of South Africa's club contingent being more competitive against norther hemisphere outfits, but there's a long way to go before the Club World Cup can be announced.
'The financial aspect is something that still needs to be figured out. At this stage, only projections have been made, but if accurate, the Club World Cup could be financially beneficial,' the SA Rugby boss revealed
'Officially, no structures have been put in place yet, and no broadcasting rights or sponsorships have been sold. So the financial impact will only be determined in the future.'
'The announcement is somewhat premature, with a lot of detail outstanding, and we don't have all the answers yet.'

Comrades Marathon FEEL GOOD: Oldest finisher sets a NEW record
Comrades Marathon legend Wally Hayward's record as the oldest person to complete the iconic race fell back in 2023 having stood for 34 years. When then 81-year-old Johannes Maros Mosehla crossed the finish line that year at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead, he broke Hayward's record as the oldest competitor to complete the ultra-marathon. Hayward ran 10:58:03 in 1989 when he was 80, coincidently the same year that Frith van der Merwe set the then women's 'down' record of 5:54:43. Mosehla, who represents Polokwane Athletic Club, was running in his 10th Comrades Marathon, which also made him by far the oldest person to join the prestigious Green Number Club. He was the oldest finisher of the 2022 event by six years in a more-than-respectable time of 11:31:27. A year later he confirmed he was in 'much better shape' and duly crossed the line in an impressive 9:26:10, a time that was faster than well over half of the field! Fast forward two years and Mosehla was back on the start line in Pietermaritzburg last Sunday in an attempt to break his own 'oldest ever Comrades Marathon finisher' record. And that's exactly what he did, crossing the finish line in a time of 11:47:27 – at the age of 83. As for what keeps him fit and healthy, Mosehla listed three main disciplines: watch what you eat watch how much sleep you get, and watch who you sleep with! Sunday's 98th Comrades Marathon started outside the Pietermaritzburg City Hall at 05:30 and ended 12 hours – and 89.98km – later at People's Park in Durban. It was the 49th 'down' run. South Africa's Tete Dijana won the men's race by just five seconds from Dutchman Piet Wiersma. In the women's race, Gerda Steyn, the darling of South African ultra-distance running, won for a third consecutive year – and fourth time overall. OPINION: Bulls up against it, but it isn't mission impossible
The Bulls will try to become the third straight team to win the URC in an away final when they take on Leinster in Dublin on Saturday. Bulls captain Ruan Nortje and Leinster captain Jack Conan pose with the URC trophy ahead of the final in Dublin on Saturday. Picture: David Fitzgerald/Sportsfile via Getty Images The Bulls are massively up against it, and Irish heavyweights Leinster are firm favourites, when the teams meet in the United Rugby Championship (URC) final in Dublin on Saturday. But, the visitors can be comforted by the fact that winning away from Loftus Versfeld isn't an impossible task. What the URC has shown over the past few years is that winning away from home is an achievable goal, and one that the Bulls could pull off if they are at their best at Croke Park this weekend. The reason is simple: In the previous three seasons of the competition two finals have been won by the away team. In season one, the Stormers finished second on the log, hosted all their playoffs and went on to win the competition, beating the Bulls 18-13 in the final. But in season two, Munster finished fifth on the log and went on to triumph, after winning all three playoff games away from home, against Glasgow Warriors, Leinster and the Stormers. Last season was a similar story with Glasgow, who finished fourth. They won their home quarterfinal against the Stormers, but then won their semifinal away against Munster and also won the final, away against the Bulls, to lift the trophy. Away champion The Bulls will now have to try and become the third straight away champion in what should be a blockbuster meeting with Leinster, who have been favourites every season, but have yet to win. Leinster have a plethora of Irish star internationals, as well as Springbok RG Snyman, All Black Jordie Barrett and French international Rabah Slimani, on their books, so are undoubtedly the favourites on paper. But despite that firepower, they have wilted in knockout rugby in the URC and Champions Cup over the last four years, and the Bulls will know that, having knocked over Leinster in two previous playoff matches – in Dublin in season one and in Pretoria last season. The Bulls, however, have also slipped up in knockout games. They lost to the Stormers in the final in season one, and to Glasgow in the final in Pretoria last season, so they, too, have their own demons to overcome.

Orlando Pirates: THREE tasty squad numbers are now available
Miguel Timm, Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako are all no longer Orlando Pirates players. That means some squad numbers are up for grabs. Monyane and Mako were released as the club looks to upgrade in the full-back department. 32-year-old Miguel Timm has been on the fringes of the first team and will sign with Sekhukhune. Paseka Mako, Miguel Timm and Thabiso Monyane are no longer with the Sea Robbers. As a result, numbers 29, 4 and 2 are available to be handed to new signings. Most Buccaneers fans will remember that jersey number 4 once belonged to the great Happy Jele. Who's got big enough footsteps to fill it next? According to SABC Sport, 31-year-old Paseka Mako is in advanced talks with Kaizer Chiefs over a winter move. Stellenbosch full-back Fawaaz Basadien was initially their first choice. However, the Winelands club is reluctant to sell the Bafana man, whom they see as an indispensable member of their squad. It's somewhat of a surprise that Pirates let go of Mako. The nifty left-back made 26 appearances in the 2024-2025 campaign. Meanwhile, 34-year-old Deon Hotto faces an uncertain long-term future. Paseka Mako during his final season with Orlando Pirates. The 38-year-old has been strongly linked with a return to Orlando Pirates, and Rulani isn't doing much to quell those rumours. He served as Josef Zinnbauer's assistant in the 2019-2020 campaign.
