People Think There's A Serial Killer Loose In Texas Right Now — Here's Why

Recently, rumors of a serial killer in Austin, Texas started gaining traction (again) when a teenage boy's body was pulled from the area's Lady Bird Lake on June 3. Although authorities claim the boy's death was not "suspicious," it was enough to make people in the area (and the internet) bring up the "Rainey Street Ripper" — a moniker that's been given by locals to a suspected killer in Austin. Here's the story:
1.Over the past three years, 19 corpses have been found in Lady Bird Lake (which is actually a reservoir) in Austin, Texas.
2.And you should know that swimming has actually been banned in Lady Bird Lake since 1964. However, kayaking and paddleboarding are allowed.
According to KVUE, the reservoir contains a lot of construction debris from old bridges, concrete, and rebar, as well as junk like shopping carts and even needles. Also, untreated water runoff from the city can pollute the reservoir with things like oil and gasoline.
3.According to My San Antonio, bodies have actually been found in Lady Bird Lake for a long, long time, dating back to when it was called "Town Lake" back in the '60s.
4.But, what really shook locals, was that in 2022, a "cluster" of six bodies were found. The victims were Rocael Lopez, Ricky Parks, Amos Olatayo, Christopher Gutierrez, Kyle Thornton, and Josue Moreno. Interestingly, they reportedly all had similar features.
5.Then, in 2023, five more bodies were found, again, all men. It was reported that each had gone missing after having a night out on the nearby Rainey Street, which is a popular nightlife area with many bars, music venues, and food trucks.

6.The moniker "Rainey Street Ripper" was given by locals to this believed serial killer because of Lady Bird Lake's proximity to Rainey Street.
7.However, according to My San Antonio, the Austin Police Department has said, "There is no evidence to support that these deaths are suspicious in any way. The vast majority of the cases either involve someone suffering from mental illness, substance abuse, or a medical issue."
8.But locals have not been satisfied with the APD's statements, with many apparently "suspicious" of police.
9.In fact, there is a Facebook group, The Lady Bird Lake Serial Killer, which was created in February 2023 and has over 92,000 members.

10.And former Austin resident (and YouTuber) Colin Browen believes the APD is "a very strange organization," and even started a Change.org petition in 2024, asking the APD to "acknowledge that the Austin drownings may not be accidents." The petition has over 6,000 signatures.
In the petition, it states they are asking for:
1.) Install proper lighting, trail cameras, and safety barricades along Lady Bird Lake.
2.) Reopen cases that have been categorized as "accidents" and investigate them as "criminal incidents."
11.According to Browen's petition, none of the deaths that have been deemed "accidents" by police have been "thoroughly investigated as more than that — an 'accident.'"
12.Browen further says, "I have spoken to multiple family members of victims who believe that their loved ones were targeted and or murdered by a person or persons that is currently operating in the Austin city area. There is a belief amongst family members of victims that their loved ones were drugged before their deaths (another possibility that the APD refuses to acknowledge)."
13.The petition also highlights what Browen alleges are "inconsistent autopsy reports, misleading toxicology reports, unexplained injuries, unexplained routes of victim travel, and leads that were never properly investigated."
14.Adding more fuel to the suspicion fire, in the last few years, several young men have been found either beaten to near death or actually killed on a trail surrounding Lady Bird Lake that is poorly lit and has no surveillance cameras.
The lack of lighting and security cameras is actually an issue that victims' friends and families have brought up to lawmakers many times.
15.For example, in 2018, 25-year-old Martin Gutierrez disappeared from that trail and was found a week later, dead, in Lady Bird Lake. According to his brother, Martin had "decided to go out with some friends on Rainey Street, and he never came back."
16.In 2019, 21-year-old Christian Pugh was found "barely alive" at Lady Bird Lake after having a night out with friends on Rainey Street days before. Although he was found on the opposite side of the lake (from Rainey Street) and his injuries were bad enough to put him in a coma, the APD said that he "fell from the bridge in a 'tragic accident.'" However, Pugh's family believes he was thrown into the lake from a nearby bridge.
17.In 2022, 29-year-old Joshua Crow had been riding his bike on that trail when he reportedly died from "blunt force trauma to the head and chest." According to his family, he'd been on his way to work at a bar on Rainey Street.
18.In February 2023, 30-year-old Jason John went missing after a night out with friends and was found dead in Lady Bird Lake eight days later. According to the autopsy reports, he was found "fully dressed with all his personal property, including his wallet and phone, in his pockets." His death, like the other ones, was ruled an accident by the police.
19.And then, in April 2023, 33-year-old Jonathan Honey was pulled from Lady Bird Lake. Joney had been in town for a bachelor party when he initially went missing on March 31. The medical examiner's office ruled that Honey died from drowning and that the death was accidental.
What do you think? Is it possible there's a serial killer active in Austin, Texas? Are all of these deaths truly "accidental," or do you think authorities (or someone) need to investigate this high number of deaths further? Are you someone who lives in Austin and have thoughts about it? Sound off in the comments below.

Beating of sea lion caught on camera, CA officials say. Now, man pleads guilty
A sick sea lion resting on a California beach was kicked in the head and beaten with a large piece of driftwood, prosecutors say. Now, 32-year-old Christopher Hurtado, of Santa Paula, has pleaded guilty 'to two felony counts related to the beating of a sea lion suffering on a Ventura beach from recent algae blooms,' the Ventura County District Attorney's Office said in a June 17 news release. McClatchy News was unable to immediately reach an attorney representing the man on June 18. 'Ventura County was outraged by the violence this defendant inflicted on a defenseless animal,' District Attorney Erik Nasarenko said in the release. 'The nature of this senseless attack shocked our conscience and called for aggressive prosecution.' As a woman was walking on the beach with her dog March 4, she spotted 'a sea lion stuck on the rocks in front of the Ventura Promenade' and called 911, prosecutors said. When dispatchers checked live footage from surveillance cameras near the Ventura Pier, they saw the man approach the sea lion and kick it in the head, prosecutors said. Hurtado sat on the rocks for a short time, then grabbed 'a four-foot piece of driftwood,' raised it above his head and hit the sea lion twice, prosecutors said. Officers arrived at the shoreline and detained him as he tried to run away, according to police, McClatchy News previously reported. 'Officers found .06 grams of methamphetamine in Hurtado's pants pocket,' prosecutors said. At the time of the attack, 'the sea lion was alive but suffering from domoic acid poisoning, a naturally occurring toxin in algae that can be harmful to marine mammals,' police said. The Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute responded to keep an eye on the sea lion's condition, according to police. The nonprofit ended up caring for the sea lion at its center but later had to euthanize it due to its domoic acid poisoning, prosecutors said. Just before his trial was set to begin, Hurtado pleaded guilty to 'one count of cruelty to an animal and possession of a hard drug,' prosecutors said. In addition, he admitted to 'special allegations and aggravating factors,' which included having a prior strike and 'that the sea lion was vulnerable,' according to prosecutors. Hurtado, who is being held on $25,000 bail, is scheduled to appear in court July 14 for sentencing and faces three years in prison, prosecutors said. Ventura is about a 70-mile drive northwest from Los Angeles. What to know about domoic acid poisoning The sea lion's death came during an uptick in the number of sea lions suffering from domoic acid poisoning found along the Southern California coast, according to a Feb. 25 Facebook post from the Pacific Marine Mammal Center. Domoic acid is produced by the algae Pseudo-nitzschia australis, according to the Marine Mammal Center. 'When conditions are right, waters off the coast of California can experience large-scale toxic algal blooms that are capable of sickening hundreds of sea lions in a matter of weeks, causing them to wash ashore at an alarming rate – sometimes a dozen a day,' according to the Marine Mammal Care Center. Some symptoms of domoic acid poisoning are 'seizures, bobbing head, erratic behavior and lethargy,' the Marine Mammal Center says. With some domoic acid poisoning cases, the Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute said it removes sea lions from the beach. In other cases, however, the organization leaves the sea lion on the beach to 'give the animal space and time to work through the acute phase of the toxin,' the organization said, adding that it continues to monitor the animal. The organization warned those who come into contact with a 'marine mammal in distress' to keep a distance of at least 50 feet.

Armenian billionaire appears in court accused of calling for regime change as church feud spirals
YEREVAN, Armenia -- One of richest men in Armenia has been arrested on charges of making public calls to seize power in the country illegally, his lawyer said Wednesday, as a feud between Armenia's prime minister and the nation's dominant church intensified. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has long had a tumultuous relationship with the Armenian Apostolic Church and billionaire Samvel Karapetyan now seems to have been caught up in it. Karapetyan, 59, was detained late on Tuesday night and appeared in front of a court in the Armenian capital of Yerevan on Wednesday, according to Armen Feroyan, his attorney. The lawyer said Karapetyan denied the charges against him. Karapetyan, who also holds Russian citizenship, owns the Tashir Group, a conglomerate that operates residential and commercial real estate as well as the Electric Networks of Armenia. Pashinyan, the prime minister, told journalists on Wednesday that the power company would be nationalized 'soon' following Karapetyan's arrest. Before his arrest, Karapetyan said in video released Tuesday, that 'a small group of people who have forgotten the thousand-year history of Armenia and the church' were attacking the religious institution. 'I have always stood with the Armenian Church and the Armenian people,' the billionaire said. "If the politicians do not succeed, we will intervene in our own way in this campaign against the church.' The remarks were seen as a jab at Pashinyan, who on June 8 called for the head of Armenia's church, Catholicos Karekin II, to resign after accusing him of fathering a child while under a vow of celibacy. At the time, the church released a statement accusing Pashinyan of undermining Armenia's 'spiritual unity' but did not address the claim about the child. Pashinyan responded, promising on Facebook to crack down on 'depraved' members of the clergy and their benefactors. 'He says 'we will intervene in our own way',' Pashinyan wrote, apparently citing Karapetyan. 'Now I will intervene in my own way.' Earlier on Wednesday, the prime minister dismissed the head of the country's national security service, Armen Abazyan. When asked by journalists if the move was linked to the billionaire's arrest, Pashinyan only said the security chief 'deserved to rest a little' after a difficult tenure.
