DMV warns of 'phishing' scams
The state Department of Motor Vehicles is warning customers to be wary of the latest phishing scam, where "bad actors" seek to gain access to personal information by pretending to be from the DMV.
According to a DMV news release, this is the latest in a series of such text message phishing schemes that DMV has warned New Yorkers to avoid. Previous scams have claimed that E-ZPass accounts were about to be suspended.
Phishing texts are fraudulent messages designed to obtain data or sensitive personal information to be used to commit identity theft or trick the recipient into installing malicious software onto a computer or mobile device.
'These scammers flood phones with these texts, hoping to trick unsuspecting New Yorkers into handing over their personal information,' said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. 'DMV will not send you texts asking for your personal information.'

The state Department of Information Technology Services provides advice on avoiding these phishing attacks:
• Be cautious about all communications you receive, including those that claim to be from "trusted entities." Be careful when clicking any links contained within those messages. If in doubt, do not click.
• Do not send personal information via email. Legitimate businesses will not ask users to send sensitive personal information through email.
• Keep an eye out for telltale signs: poor spelling or grammar, the use of threats, or the URL does not match that of the legitimate site.
• Be wary of how much information you post online. The less information you post, the less data you make available to a cybercriminal for use in developing a potential attack or scam.

A Chinese man is accused of killing and mutilating Woranan Pannacha, a transgender woman, in Pattaya after she allegedly refused to have sex with him, police said, according to The Bangkok Post. The suspect, 42, was arrested at the Samut Prakan airport and allegedly confessed to killing the 25-year-old on April 25. He allegedly met her on a beach and offered her 8,000 baht (about $240) to come to his room to have sex, but when she arrived and refused his advances, he demanded a partial refund. When she declined, the pair allegedly got into a physical altercation and he strangled her to death. The man allegedly took her body into the bathroom and used scissors to cut open her breasts and pull out her silicone implants. He told police he wanted to "play" with Pannacha's body, so he cut her open from her neck to her genitals and removed her heart, according to the Post. Police said Pannacha's lungs also went missing, but the suspect reportedly denied touching those organs. Chonburi police commander Tawatkiat Jindakuansanong later shed light on the possible motive, telling reporters per the South China Morning Post, 'He confessed and said that he had seen a TV series and wanted to try to cut open the victim and remove the organs." Mayor Eric Adams belatedly offered support Monday for a Big Apple high schooler rounded up in President Trump's deportation blitz — reversing his original assertion that the Venezuelan migrant''s arrest by ICE won't discourage other migrants from seeking city services. The city's top lawyer filed a legal brief backing Dylan Lopez Contreras, a 20-year-old Venezuelan asylum seeker who was detained in a Manhattan courthouse May 21 after attending a mandatory immigration hearing. Mayor Eric Adams, in a statement echoing the brief's arguments, said Contreras was punished for following the law. Hizzoner's openness to reopening a long-shuttered ICE office on Rikers Island and allowing city officials to collaborate with the feds on civil immigration enforcement coincided with his cozying up to Trump and other MAGA-aligned leaders. Contreras' immigration case — which is unfolding in Pennsylvania federal court — potentially puts Adams in the tough spot of appeasing his Trump-friendly allies and assuaging fears of immigrant New Yorkers worried about being unfairly caught in deportation dragnets. 'Dylan has done everything legally necessary to satisfy his immigration process, yet was kidnapped by ICE right in front of his mother after attending his scheduled immigration court hearing,' said Power Malu, president of compassion and Candice Braun, chief empathy officer of Artists Athletes Activists/ROCC NYC, in a statement. 'On the one hand, the mayor of our sanctuary city is encouraging people to continue using public services and on the other hand he is not willing to stand up and protect our residents from wrongful ICE apprehensions.'
