Campaign launched to manage plastic waste in Maldives
Male: Siyam World Maldives is proud to announce its collaboration with CLEANMaldives under the PLEASE Project (Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia), further strengthening its commitment to sustainability as part of Sun Siyam's resort-wide Sun Siyam Cares initiatives.
This year-long pilot project, supported by organisations such as UNOPS, the World Bank, , SACEP, CLEANMaldives and Climate Collective Foundation , aims to address plastic waste while setting a new standard for innovative recycling solutions in the Maldives.
The focus also lies on reducing single-use plastics by recycling plastic waste on-site into durable, eco-friendly furniture, including benches and loungers.
With the use of advanced recycling technology provided by CLEANMaldives solution provider Econscious, Siyam World is pioneering a circular economy model that showcases the potential for scalable sustainability solutions.
The project combines Siyam World's operational excellence with Econscious' technical expertise.
The resort provides the infrastructure, oversees operations, and ensures efficient waste collection, while CLEANMaldives supplies cutting-edge machinery and delivers technical training to resort staff.
Together, this partnership demonstrates how collaboration can drive impactful environmental change within the hospitality sector.
Complementing ongoing efforts in areas such as coral conservation, renewable energy projects, and waste management, the PLEASE Project underscores Siyam World's commitment to creating a positive environmental legacy.
Reflecting on this initiative, Ausy Waseem, Resort Manager at Siyam World, stated: "To truly address plastic waste, we wanted to be part of a solution that is impactful, comprehensive, and beneficial to everyone. This aligns with Mr. Siyam's philosophy of pursuing meaningful actions rather than resorting to greenwashing or empty promises."
The year-long PLEASE Project represents an important step towards addressing the plastic waste crisis. It serves as a blueprint for other Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and businesses in the tourism sector to adopt innovative, scalable solutions that promote environmental stewardship and sustainability.

Thousands protest in Athens
ATHENS: Thousands of Greeks gathered in Athens on Wednesday to demand higher wages to cope with rising living costs and a one-day strike left ferries docked at ports, flights grounded and trains at a standstill. Along with air traffic controllers, seafarers and train workers, municipal workers; and bus and metro workers in the capital also walked out. "The workers' salary only gets us through the 10th or the 15th day of the month, it cannot cover basic needs, such as housing and food, education and health," said private sector workers' representative Dina Gkogkaki, 52, who joined the protests in the central Syntagma Square on Wednesday. The General Confederation of Greek Workers, which represents more than 2 million private sector employees, says that Greek workers are buying 10% fewer goods compared to 2019 due to inflation and has called for substantial pay rises and collective labour contracts. Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis told an economic conference in Delphi, Greece that he shared Greek workers' concerns, but that reducing taxation was still a key priority for the government. — Reuters

London closes in on New York as top financial hub
London has edged closer to becoming the world's top financial centre, fresh research shows, but concerns have been raised over the City's future competitiveness. The 37th edition of Z/Yen Group's Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI 37) showed London maintained its second-place ranking amongst the world's top financial centres, whilst climbing 12 points from its last rating in September. New York topped the table yet again, but its lead over London has narrowed. London dominates the European rankings, with a 19-point lead over Frankfurt which missed out on a spot in the top ten, ranking eleventh globally. The capital was in the top three centres for all eight major industries and scored first for banking. Elsewhere, in fintech London was at the heels of the Big Apple, reducing the gap between first and second place to a singular point. The survey also questioned respondents on their home centre prospects, with London ranking as one of the top centres anticipated to become more competitive. However, concerns exist over risks to London's future status, given that business confidence has taken a hit since the Chancellor Rachel Reeves' Autumn Budget. The latest release from the Office for National Statistics showed the economy shrank 0.1 per cent in January, in another blow to growth prospects. Reeves had pledged to unlock growth across the country, which has included the launch of a National Wealth Fund and slashing regulation. London market's woes have continued into 2025, after 2024 saw the largest outflow of listed companies since the global financial crisis, according to data from auditing giant EY. In total, 88 companies moved out of the market last year, compared to just 18 new listings. MIDDLE EAST AND ASIA DOMINATE FUTURE PROSPECTS London ranked 12th on a sub survey focusing on future prospects, with only 17 respondents mentioning the City as a centre they consider likely to grow in significance over the next two to three years. The Middle East and Asia dominated the top 15, with seven of the centres in the Asia/Pacific region and six in the Middle East and Africa. Dubai scored first with 63 mentions and Seoul second at 48. Professor Michael Mainelli, chairman of Z/Yen and former Lord Mayor of London, said: 'Confidence in leading international financial centres remains strong, with a high degree of stability in rankings.' However, Mainelli noted the index period of the report falls outside of the new US administration, which has triggered a period of economic uncertainty. 'A slowdown in US centres may indicate some projected decoupling from global markets,' Mainelli added. The GFCI generates ratings through a combination of survey respondents and a statistical model. GFCI 37 used 140 instrumental factors combined with 31,314 survey assessments of financial centres and 4,946 respondents to an online questionnaire for the research. LONDON TO BE REPRESENTED AT MAJOR NEW YORK TRAVEL SHOW. Two of the City of London's most important cultural venues (The Barbican and the Ned) will promote the area at a New York travel show later this month. The Barbican and the Ned will attend SMU International, an event that connects industry experts with travel buyers looking to invest worldwide. Jenny Waller, head of sales at the Barbican, said the event is a 'perfect platform' to 'share our vision and inspire international event organisers. She added: 'London's Square Mile is not just the financial heart of our capital; it's a cultural beacon'. A spate of new buildings with sustainable and public-facing initiatives are also on the way and are going to be incorporated into the plan. 'The City of London is a shining example of how London is constantly evolving, building upon history and discovering something new,' Rachel Lajom, Head of Groups & Events Sales at The Ned said. PM Modi, US President Trump agree to push forward negotiations on multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Trump have agreed to push forward negotiations on a multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), according to sources. This mutually beneficial agreement, finalised in February 2025, aims to boost market access, reduce tariffs and non-tariff barriers, and enhance supply chain integration. To achieve this, both leaders have decided to designate senior representatives to advance the negotiations. This move demonstrates their commitment to strengthening trade ties and promoting economic cooperation between the two nations, sources said on Saturday. The BTA is expected to impact various sectors, including goods and services. By increasing market access and reducing barriers, the agreement will facilitate smoother trade flows and create new opportunities for businesses on both sides. An Indian delegation led by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal visited Washington from March 3 to 6, 2025, to meet with the US Commerce Secretary, the US Trade Representative, and their teams. These discussions are part of a broader effort to boost bilateral trade to USD 500 billion by 2030. The agreement will focus on various sectors, including energy, defense, and technology. India has already reduced its average applied tariffs for key developed countries like Australia, UAE, Switzerland, and Norway under recently concluded trade agreements. Similar negotiations are currently underway with the European Union and the United Kingdom, among other partners. The ongoing discussions with the United States should be seen in this context, said the sources Meanwhile, in February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Washington, DC, where both the leaders set an ambitious goal to double bilateral trade to USD 500 billion by 2030. According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the leaders resolved to expand trade and investment to make their citizens more prosperous, nations stronger, economies more innovative, and supply chains more resilient. They also resolved to deepen the US- India trade relationship to promote growth that ensures fairness, national security, and job creation. To this end, the leaders set a bold new goal for bilateral trade--"Mission 500"--aiming to more than double total bilateral trade to USD 500 billion by 2030. (ANI)
