‘Mystery liquid' found in English coastal town prompts evacuation of 160 homes
A bottle of mystery liquid in a house in Eastbourne has caused the evacuation of 160 homes on Tuesday morning.
Police were called to an address in Hyde Road at 5.27pm on Monday evening after receiving reports of an unidentified liquid.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attended to assess the item, with residents in nearby properties advised to stay indoors while access to the area was restricted.
It was then decided that a planned evacuation of those living in the vicinity would take place on Tuesday 24 June, with residents from six different streets asked to leave their homes by 9am.
Sussex Police officers remain at the scene while the roads are closed, with no immediate risk to the public.
Detective Superintendent Jon Robeson said: 'Our priority is to keep people safe. We are satisfied that there is no immediate risk to residents and an evacuation of nearby homes can be completed safely and effectively during daylight hours to minimise impact on the local residents.
'We will have a number of uniformed officers present on Tuesday morning to assist with the planned evacuation and offer further advice.
'We would encourage residents of Hyde Road, Camden Road, Calverley Road, West Terrace, Bath Road and Grove Road to leave their addresses by 9am.
'We appreciate the support of residents and the wider community who will be affected by the necessary precautionary actions we need to take, and hopefully they will be able to swiftly return to their homes.
'I would like to thank them for their patience and understanding while we bring this incident to a safe conclusion.
'The item is secure and the road closed, and a number of police will be present to provide reassurance as we work with emergency services and other partner agencies to minimise disruption.
'Public safety is our priority, and the cordon will take in around 160 homes. We will allow residents to return to their homes as soon as it is safe for them to do so.'

He said there was no dispute Mr Masum had killed his wife but that he now relied on the partial defences of "diminished responsibility and a loss of control".He told the court that although Mr Masum was suffering from depression at the time, that did not provide an explanation for the killing."The only person Habibur Masum feels sorry for is himself and the predicament he finds himself in," he told jurors that during the fatal attack Mr Masum had stabbed his wife "many, many" times before he slit her said: "Such a brutal and violent assault by the defendant, culminating in a deliberate cutting of his wife's throat, only points to an intention to kill. That is what he wanted, that is what he did."The court was told that after the attack Mr Masum "very quickly" left the area, travelling to Aylesbury and changing his appearance by shaving his beard and cutting his prosecution said these were not features of a mental abnormality, but "unequivocally point to planning, calculation, cunning and, ultimately, pre-meditated murder."The trial continues. Woman stabbed eight times in her Camden flat, court hears

Couple jailed over 'frenzied' knife murder in Paisley tower block
A former couple have been jailed for the "frenzied" knife murder of a man after an argument broke out in a tower Fisher, 26, was found critically injured in a flat in Maxwellton Street, Paisley, on 23 July 2023 and died in hospital four days later. Cameron Woods, 27, and Stacey Balfour, 24, who were together at the time, were found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow last month. Prosecutors said Woods fatally stabbed Mr Fisher while his then partner Balfour was "acting in concert" as she knew there would be violence. Woods was jailed for a minimum 18-and-a-half years and Balfour for 16 trial had earlier been told all three had been in a flat with other people in the Renfrewshire town. During this time a witness said Woods had been spotted with a large kitchen Balfour had shown someone a small lockback blade - attached to a set of keys - which was later used in the fatal court heard it was launched after the atmosphere between the group in the flat became "volatile".Prosecutor Erin Campbell said it was clear "the situation escalated" and eventually led to Mr Fisher being stabbed "in what amounted to a murderous attack".The victim managed to stagger out of the flat with blood on his face and on his t-shirt.A man dialled 999 as Mr Fisher groaned in the background: "I have been stabbed."He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, where he later died. During the trial, the court heard Mr Fisher had five separate stab wounds and possible defensive Campbell told the jury: "If you are trying to strike someone in the head or chest then there are only two possibilities."Either you are deliberately trying to kill the person."Or you are so angry and wild in the moment, you have total disregard if the person lives or dies."The advocate depute told the court Mr Fisher had been subjected to a "frenzied attack".Woods was later stopped by police at a cycle track and found to be in possession of the murder weapon, with Mr Fisher's blood on initially told police she had last seen the victim when he left the flat with another Findlay KC, defending Woods, said "no one set out looking for trouble". "Something clearly happened which led to a conflict. "There was a reaction to something."Balfour's KC Thomas Ross said she had previously suffered a "traumatic" incident in 2014 and a had been in a "toxic relationship" before the killing.
