Hawkers Return To IT Park Road, Undermining ‘Freedom Footpath' Drive
Nagpur: The much-publicised 'Freedom Footpath' drive by the
Nagpur Municipal Corporation
(NMC) and city traffic police, which recently cleared illegal hawkers from the IT Park Road near VNIT main gate, has suffered a major setback.
Just days after the encroachments were removed, hawkers have returned, once again occupying footpaths from Mate Chowk to VNIT gate.
Traffic police and NMC had recently removed over 2,200 encroachments in just five days, including from the IT Park Road.
A visit to the spot by TOI revealed a complete 180-degree turn from what it was a few days ago. During the recent anti-encroachment drive, footpaths and road edges previously blocked by unauthorised vendors were cleared, offering noticeable relief to pedestrians and easing traffic flow.
However, the change was short-lived.
Sheetal Waghmare, a student, expressed her frustration, stating that vehicles parked by vendors are once again causing congestion. "For a few days, the roads felt open and walkable, but now it feels like we're back to square one," she said.
Lalit Pal, a security guard at a nearby college, highlighted the dangers these obstructions create. He pointed out that, beyond the inconvenience, the encroachments frequently cause minor accidents involving pedestrians and two-wheelers.
A recent visit to the area revealed that most of the ousted stalls, food carts, and makeshift structures have returned. Footpaths are once again blocked, forcing pedestrians onto the roads. The edge of the street has become chaotic, with narrowed lanes and growing safety concerns for both commuters and walkers.
Encroachments near VNIT College have become a recurring issue. Students and security staff claim that while the area saw marked improvement during the drive, the order was fleeting and has since dissolved into the familiar disorder.
Speaking to TOI, Sanjay Kamble, assistant superintendent of NMC's enforcement department, said that as soon as NMC officials left the spot, the hawkers came back. "This is a recurring issue, we need to devise a permanent solution to this soon," Kamble said. He added that from Monday, NMC will intensify its efforts to curb such encroachments.

After Operation Sindoor, Bhutto turns into a boor, calls Modi a cheap version of Netanyahu
The TOI correspondent from Washington: An indirect war of words erupted between Indian and Pakistani delegations on Wednesday as they arrived separately in the US capital to present their respective versions of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Operation Sindoor , and the Kashmir issue , and the growing rift between the two nations. The spat was triggered by gratuitous remarks by Bilawal Bhutto, leader of the Pakistani delegation, who at a press conference at the United Nations in New York, likened Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a "Temu version of (Benjamin) Netanyahu...a poor copy" as he sought to draw parallels between India's punitive response to Pahalgal and Israeli actions in Gaza. Temu is a Chinese ecommerce website/app that sells discounted merchandize. The Indian delegation wasted no time smacking back. "Pakistan is a country that is surviving with inferior products borrowed from China, including military hardware. It must be hurting to see authentic, high-caliber military hardware and also strong democratic leadership on the other side of the border," clapped back Tejasvi Surya, a member of the Indian team, as it arrived in Washington DC and began meetings with US lawmakers, think-tanks, and social media influencers. "A country that is busy creating fake heroes, by promoting failed Generals, will never know what true leaders look like," Surya added. Shashi Tharoor, leader of the Indian delegation, appeared to have anticipated the clash, almost with a sense of relish, noting as the team arrived in Washington DC that the Pakistanis would also be there at the same time "so there's going to be perhaps an increase in interest because there are two duelling delegations in the same city." But Bhutto was down for the count even before got to Washington when he was ambushed at the UN as he tried to enlist sympathetic journalists with planted questions aimed at amplifying Pakistan's narrative about India's treatment of Muslims. Embarrassingly for him, a reporter called him out saying he had watched the briefings on both sides and "as far as I recall, there were Muslim Indian military officers who were conducting the briefings on the Indian side. " Bhutto also claimed that Pakistan radars had locked into 20 Indian jets on the night of May 7 and "If we wanted, we could've taken down all 20," but Pakistan showed restraint and"only 6 were shot down — the ones that launched strikes." He also rolled out the familiar trope about Pakistan being a "victim of terrorism" -- in a city where Pakistani nationals Ramzi Yousuf and Khalid Shaikh Mohammed launched attacks on the World Trade Center in 1993 and 2001. RCB IPL victory celebration ends in stampede: 8 feared dead, 25 injured outside Chinnaswamy stadium
Thousands gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden IPL title near the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. However, the celebration turned tragic when a stampede broke out near the venue. As per reports of TOI, at least eight people are feared dead, and over 25 have been injured in the incident. The situation quickly spiralled out of control, raising concerns about crowd management and the decision-making behind holding the parade. Overcrowding and poor planning cited as key triggers According to early assessments, overcrowding and lack of proper crowd control are suspected to have caused the stampede. A massive number of RCB fans had gathered near Vidhana Soudha and Chinnaswamy Stadium, waving flags and celebrating the IPL 2025 victory. However, without adequate safety arrangements, panic spread, leading to chaos. Government faces criticism over safety lapses Karnataka BJP President B Y Vijayendra strongly criticised the state government, stating, 'The state government should take full responsibility for this tragedy. When the whole country and Karnataka were celebrating RCB's victory, the state government's haste to hold a victory rally without any prior preparations led to this tragedy.' He added that the ruling administration was more focused on publicity than making arrangements to ensure safety. (Full video available on PTI Videos - Deputy CM confirms program was stopped due to uncontrollable crowd Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, responding to the incident, said, 'The crowd was uncontrollable. Police was finding it difficult, so we had to stop the program.' His statement confirmed that authorities were unable to manage the turnout, which overwhelmed security forces and led to the cancellation of the scheduled felicitation events. Celebration turns into tragedy The stampede has overshadowed what was meant to be a celebratory moment for the city and its cricket fans. Royal Challengers Bengaluru had recently clinched their first-ever IPL trophy under the captaincy of Rajat Patidar, defeating Punjab Kings. The planned open-top bus parade was already scrapped earlier in the day due to security concerns. The revised celebration, meant to take place between Vidhana Soudha and the stadium, failed to avert danger.
