Millions of people in Pennsylvania may be drinking water contaminated with forever chemicals.
This is the conclusion of a study from the Pennsylvania State University, which sampled water from 167 private wells across the state looking for so-called 'forever chemicals.'
These manmade chemicals—properly known as per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)—get their nickname from how they don't break down easily either in the environment, or in the body, risking a dangerous build up.
The team found that 65 percent of the wells they tested had detectable levels of PFAS—with 18 percent exceeding the maximum contaminant levels for drinking water set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
According to the researchers, some 3.5 million people in Pennsylvania rely on private wells to supply drinking water.

Paper author and Penn State civil engineer professor Heather Preisendanz said that her immediate reaction was "a little bit of relief" upon seeing the data.
"We were happy that most of the numbers we saw were within the drinking water standards," Preisendanz said.
"Only 18 percent of the wells had levels that were higher than the federal standards, but they weren't thousands of times higher than the drinking water standards, as we have seen in other places."
Previous studies have found forever chemicals in soil, food, food packaging, household products, and personal care products. While most Americans have a relatively low exposure to PFAS, high enough levels could lead to decreased fertility, high blood pressure, increased risk of cancer, reduced immune system and increased cholesterol levels, according to the EPA.
While the data reveals a possible link between PFAS levels and socio-economic status, the nature of this correlation may not be what one might expect.
The team found that lower income areas—with both higher levels of poverty and exposure to industrial sites—did not show higher PFAS contamination levels, but wealthier areas did.
The study was conceived to monitor whether the use of sewage sludge, or "biosolids," as fertilizers and soil additives might be increasing PFAS contamination in drinking water.
However, the team did not find higher PFAS levels in wells near agricultural areas that made use of such treated wastewater.
Conversely, developed land with "constructed materials and impervious surfaces" was also more likely to contain PFAS.
Much PFAS contamination can be treated with at-home technologies, Preisendanz noted. Concerned Pennsylvanians, she added, are recommended to test their water supply, however, as the results are not certain to be representative of all the private wells across the state.
The EPA has established legally enforceable levels (known as "Maximum Contaminant Levels") for six PFAS found in drinking water. Public water systems have five years to implement solutions to reduce the PFAS, and by 2029, they will be required to notify the public of any violations.

Last year, the Biden administration sought to finish the decades-long fight by banning chrysotile asbestos. At the time, the EPA called it a milestone in the fight against cancer. The EPA on Monday said in a court filing that it would reconsider the Biden administration's rule over roughly the next 30 months. The agency said the Toxic Substances Control Act requires it to evaluate a chemical's risk and the consequences of restricting it. Now, officials will look at whether parts of the ban 'went beyond what is necessary to eliminate the unreasonable risk and whether alternative measures — such as requiring permanent workplace protection measures — would eliminate the unreasonable risk,' according to a court declaration by Lynn Ann Dekleva, a senior official in EPA's Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. Chrysotile asbestos is found in products like brake blocks, asbestos diaphragms and sheet gaskets and was banned under the Toxic Substances Control Act, which was broadened in 2016. When the ban was announced, there were eight U.S. facilities that used asbestos diaphragms in the chlor-alkali sector for the manufacture of chlorine and sodium hydroxide, chemicals commonly used as water disinfectants. 'This latest move by Administrator Lee Zeldin and EPA is yet another alarming signal that this administration is operating without limits as they dole out favors to polluter lobbyists without regard for the health and well-being of people living in the US,' said Michelle Roos, executive director of the Environmental Protection Network, a nonprofit. Zeldin has announced dozens of deregulatory actions in the first months of the Trump administration and former top industry officials are in key EPA positions — Dekleva, for example, used to work at the American Chemistry Council, which was among the groups that filed the court challenge against the Biden administration's ban. That brought up the need to examine exactly what the rules are for health care coverage for those delaying Medicare because they have the option of staying with their company's health insurance beyond the age of 65, when eligibility for Medicare begins. Your options depend on the size of your employer, according to the AARP. If you work for a company with 20 or more employees, you can delay enrolling in Medicare without penalties if your employer provides creditable health coverage. Creditable coverage is employer-sponsored insurance that meets or exceeds Medicare's benefits, allowing you to delay enrollment without penalties. Large employers (20-plus employees) typically provide creditable Part B coverage (doctor visits and preventive health care), while prescription plans must match Medicare's drug benefits for Part D. You can keep your employer plan and postpone Medicare, switch fully to Medicare by dropping your employer coverage, or have both - though your employer plan will be the primary payer, meaning it covers costs first before Medicare kicks in. For those working at smaller companies with fewer than 20 employees, Medicare becomes your primary insurance once you turn 65, so enrolling is necessary to maintain full health benefits. Your employer coverage can act as secondary insurance, helping cover additional expenses. It's important to weigh your options carefully, taking into account premiums, out-of-pocket costs, and your coverage needs. When enrolling in Medicare, you can choose between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, Ramsey wrote. Original Medicare offers more flexibility in selecting healthcare providers, while Medicare Advantage (also known as Medicare Part C) functions as an all-in-one alternative with more structured coverage but less control over provider choices. Medicare Advantage is covered by private insurance companies. Because Original Medicare alone may not cover all medical expenses, many people choose Medicare supplemental insurance to help with costs such as copayments and deductibles.
