Christina Liew back as Sabah PKR advisor as Mustapha Sakmud leads new team into state polls mode
KOTA KINABALU, June 30 — Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah has announced its new state leadership council (MPN) lineup on Sunday, with Datuk Ts Mustapha Sakmud retaining his position as chairman.
Former state leader Datuk Seri Christina Liew returns as advisor, joined by Abdul Rahman Yakub as second advisor.
Assisting Mustapha are deputy chairman Datuk Peto Galim and vice presidents Datuk Sangkar Rasam, Azmi Datu Tumbuyung and Mohd Amin Mem.
Ahmad Farid Sainuri has been appointed as the new information chief, while Rufinah Pangeran leads the Women wing and Zaidi Jatil heads the Youth wing.
Other key appointments include Abdul Razak Jamil as secretary, Stefly Said as treasurer, Mohd Guntur Datuk Sangkar as communications director, Grace Lee as managing secretary, and Awang Husaini Awang Sahari as a political bureau member.
During a press conference at the PKR Sabah office, the new leadership team said they are actively carrying out grassroots activities to gauge voter sentiment in key areas.
They added that these efforts mark the party's initial steps in preparing for the upcoming state elections and reflect their commitment to listening to the people's concerns and understanding their needs. — The Borneo Post

RTS Link fares to be revealed closer to launch, says Loke as Malaysia, Singapore unveil first train set
SINGAPORE, June 30 — The operator of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is conducting a final market study to determine ticket fares, with the final pricing and fare mechanism to be announced closer to the service's launch, Malaysia's Transport Minister Anthony Loke said on Monday. 'We hope that the right price mechanism is in place to ensure that it can encourage more people to use the RTS service. 'The whole idea of this project is to make the modal shift, to ensure that more people use public transport to cross the Causeway,' he said at a joint press conference with Singapore acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow, after unveiling the first of the eight RTS Link train sets at the Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC) here. The event was also attended by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO), a joint venture between Prasarana RTS Operations Sdn Bhd and SMRT RTS Pte Ltd, is the operator of the RTS Link, a cross-border rail connecting Malaysia and Singapore. Loke said the Malaysian government was pushing for a more open payment system, in line with global public transport trends, which would allow commuters to use multiple modes of payment. Singapore's Siow said fares should be determined commercially by RTSO, taking into account demand and supply, as well as costs. Meanwhile, Loke said RTSO would also finalise the operating hours for the train service, which links Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru to Woodlands North in Singapore, by taking into account early commuters. 'One principle which is very important is that no urban rail will operate 24 hours. We need to have a few hours of engineering and normal (routine) maintenance,' he said. Loke said the project would not only help to improve the lives of cross-border commuters but also represent strengthened ties between Malaysia and Singapore amidst increasing global trade protectionism. 'In other parts of the world, people are busy setting up barriers. 'Here, we are breaking down barriers, building more connectivity, building more bridges, and this is something which will bring both Singapore and Malaysia closer together, particularly between Singapore and Johor Bahru,' he said, adding that it is a major component of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to meet top executives from 36 Italian companies, including global giants such as Leonardo SpA, STMicroelectronics, and Ferrero, during his working visit to Rome. The discussions will take place at the Malaysia-Italy Economic Partnership Roundtable on July 2, as confirmed by Malaysian Ambassador to Italy, Datuk Zahid Rastam. The roundtable will also feature Malaysian companies accompanying Anwar, alongside Italian firms seeking deeper collaboration with Malaysia. Leonardo SpA operates in aerospace and defence, STMicroelectronics is a key semiconductor player, and Ferrero is a leading confectionery manufacturer—all with substantial operations in Malaysia. Zahid Rastam noted that Italian firms are keen to expand investments and partnerships in Malaysia, highlighting the country's strategic position in Southeast Asia. Italy, the EU's third-largest economy, contributes 12 per cent of the bloc's GDP, making it a crucial partner for Malaysia. Beyond business discussions, Anwar will hold talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, defence, agro-commodity, and digital economy. The Malaysia-EU Free Trade Agreement (MEUFTA) will also be a key agenda item. The first round of MEUFTA negotiations is set for June 30 to July 4, 2025, in Brussels, with a target conclusion by 2026. BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to meet captains of industry from 36 Italian firms, including multinational companies such as Leonardo SpA, STMicroelectronics and Ferrero during his maiden working visit to Rome, Italy on July 1. The meeting will take place during the Malaysia-Italy Economic Partnership Roundtable on July 2, Malaysian Ambassador to Italy, Datuk Zahid Rastam said today. 'In addition to the 36 Italian companies and several industry associations here, Malaysian companies accompanying the Prime Minister will also be in attendance,' he said in a virtual briefing here today ahead of the three-day working visit. Leonardo specialises in aerospace, defence and security, STMicroelectronics is a semiconductor company, while Ferrero is one of the world's largest sweet-packaged food companies. All three MNCs have a significant presence in Malaysia. 'Additionally, there will be Italian companies looking to further engage, invest, and explore opportunities for collaboration with Malaysia,' Zahid Rastam said. Italy is the third-largest national economy in the European Union (EU) and the world's eighth-largest by gross domestic product (GDP). Its economy accounts for about 12 per cent of the EU's GDP. Besides the business meeting, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, is also set to discuss bilateral cooperation on trade, investment, defence, agro-commodity and digital economy with his counterpart Giorgia Meloni.
