Nearly 40 employers offer 450 roles at job fair for retrenched Jetstar Asia staff

Nearly 40 employers from a mix of industries, from aviation and aerospace to public transport and hospitality, have come together in an effort to match retrenched Jetstar Asia employees with new jobs.
The job fair at Changi Airport Terminal 1 is open to all Jetstar Asia staff and will run from June 17 to 19.
It features more than 450 roles, including positions for pilots, cabin crew, customer service, engineering, and safety and quality assurance, the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) said on June 18.
Jetstar Asia, a Singapore-based low-cost airline, will shut down after more than 20 years in operation, it said on June 11.
The airline will continue to operate flights out of Singapore for seven weeks, with a progressively reduced schedule until its final day of operations on July 31.
Over 500 Singapore-based employees will be laid off when the airline closes.
The Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group said on June 13 that it would create positions for retrenched Jetstar Asia employees across its airlines, including 100 jobs for pilots and 200 jobs for cabin crew.
NTUC said SIA and its low-cost arm Scoot are "primarily supporting" the recruitment efforts for pilots and cabin crew and will be at the job fair on all three days.
A range of other employers - a total of 38 companies - will be at the job fair on different days, including planemaker Airbus and its aircraft component and service subsidiary Satair, airport operator Changi Airport Group, inflight caterer and ground handler Sats, public transport operator SMRT and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS).
The job fair aims to provide direct support to Jetstar Asia employees, including career coaching, skills upgrading and employability assistance, and allow them to tap the labour movement's unions for support, NTUC said.
In a Facebook post on June 18, labour chief Ng Chee Meng said he had visited the job fair and spoken to retrenched employees at Terminals 1 and 3.
"They shared their concerns and uncertainties about what lies ahead, and I completely understand the anxiety that they feel," he said. "I want to assure them that they are not alone."
Mr Jerome Tan, 37, who works in flight operations, visited the job fair on June 17. Those affected by the impending closure are "coping with it in their own perspective, speed and pace", he told The Straits Times.
Mr Tan, who has worked at Jetstar Asia for nine years, said he has applied for a job at SIA. "I think the common approach would be to (go to) Scoot or SIA" because staff can still be based in Singapore.
He added that the job fair had booths where Jetstar Asia staff could scan a QR code to find out more about the roles on offer. While he did not see the closure coming, he said he was taking it in his stride, preferring to see it as a business decision.
A cabin crew member who asked not to be named said she was "shocked" when she heard about the airline's decision to stop operations. She was on annual leave at the time. The 24-year-old has worked at Jetstar Asia for nearly three years and applied for cabin crew positions at SIA and Scoot a few days after news of the impending closure.
Another member of the cabin crew, who also did not want to be named, said she plans to leave the aviation industry for hotel management. She was in Taiwan when she heard about the airline's impending closure.
The job fair was organised by the NTUC Aerospace and Aviation cluster, NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute, the Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union, CAAS and Jetstar Asia.
More than 100 employees were at the fair on the first day, with a similar number expected on each of the remaining two days.

She started flying in her early twenties, fulfilling a childhood dream. Now 65, she has racked up 42 years of experience in a role she describes as 'a passion for flying'. The in-flight customer service manager told The Straits Times that her favourite part is 'meeting all sorts of people, interacting with them'. She joined Jetstar Asia 13 years ago, after more than 28 years with Singapore Airlines (SIA). Asked how she felt about Jetstar Asia's looming closure, Ms Wee paused, visibly emotional. 'It's very sad. I still can't get over it,' she said. The Singapore-based low-cost carrier announced on June 11 that it would cease operations – more than 20 years since its maiden flight in December 2004. It will continue to operate flights out of Singapore with a reduced schedule until its final day of operations on July 31. Over 500 Singapore-based employees will be laid off when the airline closes. 'I still have a passion for flying,' she said, though she is unsure if her age will affect her job prospects. 'I thought I'd finish my career here': Captain Captain Yohan Janeau, 38, was enjoying breakfast with family on June 11 when he found out about Jetstar Asia's closure. 'Honestly, I couldn't believe it,' the Frenchman told ST. 'I knew we weren't profitable. But to the point of closing the airline ... it came as a shock.' His first thought was for his family. After moving countries four times in five years, Capt Janeau was looking forward to some stability for his wife and children, aged eight and five. 'Beyond the impact on employees, their families are also very impacted... the children, the wives, everyone.' He did not have much time that day to process the shock with his family. About two hours after he received the news about the airline's closure, he received a call. A captain rostered to operate a turnaround flight to Phuket that day had decided that he was not fit to fly, being too emotional after hearing the news. Capt Janeau stepped up to take over the flight. When he landed at Terminal 4 later that day, he was met with 'sadness and tears' from other employees, who had gathered to support each other. 'It's not easy,' said the pilot, who first joined Jetstar Asia in 2013 and was promoted to captain in 2017. He got married in Singapore, where his first child was also born. His family had been excited to return. 'Singapore is where I thought my life would be for the next 20 years... We consider this our home,' Capt Janeau said. 'I really thought that this would be my last move, and that I would finish my career here,' he added. He has applied for positions at SIA and Scoot, in the hope that his family can remain in Singapore, where his wife, also French, has found a job as a marketing and communications manager, and his children enjoy their school. 'I was very happy to see that the SIA Group stepped in (to offer jobs to pilots and cabin crew). Hopefully, it applies to foreigners like me,' he said. The SIA Group said on June 13 that it would create positions for retrenched Jetstar Asia employees across its airlines, including 100 jobs for pilots and 200 for cabin crew. A spokesperson for the company said its aim is to support as many affected staff as possible in continuing their careers in the aviation sector. Ms Wee, the flight attendant, said that while the overall mood among her colleagues has been sombre, they remain committed to their jobs and the airline until the inevitable end. [SINGAPORE] Local shares fell for a second consecutive session on Thursday (Jun 19), after US Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell warned of 'meaningful' inflation ahead, as consumers are expected to face higher prices due to the Trump administration's proposed import tariffs. He also cautioned against placing too much confidence in the current outlook for rate cuts. The benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) lost 0.7 per cent or 26.63 points to close at 3,894.18. Across the broader market, decliners outnumbered advancers 315 to 167, with 981.1 million securities worth S$933.2 million changing hands. The top performer on the Straits Times Index (STI) was Hong Kong-based conglomerate Jardine Matheson Holdings , up 0.9 per cent or US$0.43 at US$46.26. At the other end of the index was Thai Beverage , the maker of Chang beer. The counter declined 3.2 per cent or S$0.015 to close at S$0.45. The trio of local banks were in the red. DBS was down 0.7 per cent or S$0.30 at S$43.93, OCBC declined 0.3 per cent or S$0.05 to S$15.99 and UOB closed 0.3 per cent or S$0.12 lower at S$34.71. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 1 per cent and the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI declined 0.7 per cent. Australia's ASX 200 slipped 0.1 per cent and Hong Kong's Hang Seng tumbled 2 per cent. South Korea's Kospi bucked the trend, closing 0.2 per cent higher. Suan Teck Kin, head of research at UOB Global Economics & Markets Research, said the research team is still projecting for three 25-basis-point rate cuts in 2025, to be delivered at the September, October and December FOMC meetings. This would bring the upper bound of the Fed Funds Target Rate (FFTR) to 3.75 per cent by the end of 2025. He added that the team is also maintaining its forecast for two additional rate cuts in 2026, which would lower the terminal FFTR to 3.25 per cent that year. 'The revised 'dot plot' suggests the Fed will still cut rates two times this year, unchanged from its March outlook, though the June version shows more dispersion among the Fed members, as a result of the elevated uncertainty,' said Suan.

[NEW DELHI] India will send the black box recovered from the recent fatally crashed Air India plane to the US for analysis, business newspaper The Economic Times reported on Thursday (Jun 19), citing people aware of the development. Indian authorities are investigating the crash of an Air India Boeing Dreamliner which last week killed 241 people on board and at least 30 on the ground, marking the world's worst aviation disaster in a decade. 'The recorder sustained heavy external damage from post-crash fire making it impossible to extract data in India,' the ET said, citing people aware of the development. However, the Director General of India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, GVG Yugandhar, said in an emailed response to Reuters that the report was 'factually incorrect', without giving further details. Air India declined comment. The disaster has cast a shadow on Air India's ambitions to become a 'world class airline' and put top bosses at Boeing back in crisis mode. The black box consists of two components – the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder. Data from the flight data recorder will be extracted at the Washington-based laboratory of the National Transportation Safety Board and shared with AAIB, the ET report added, citing sources. The NTSB did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment. United Kingdom's Air Accidents Investigation Branch will also be present at the laboratory, the report added.
