‘Had We Been There For 10 More Minutes…' Maharashtra Tourists Recall Narrow Escape In Pahalgam
The horrifying incident has sparked nationwide outrage and renewed fears over tourist safety in the Kashmir valley
For dozens of tourists from Maharashtra, a vacation to the scenic valleys of Kashmir turned into a nightmare on Tuesday when terrorists opened fire on travellers in Pahalgam, killing 26. Several families from Maharashtra, who were in or near the area during the attack, narrowly escaped what could have been a fatal encounter.
A group of 11 tourists from Amravati — including members of the Bodke, Deshmukh, Umekar, and Lande families — had been at the very site of the attack just minutes earlier. 'It's nothing short of a miracle. We had just left the place when the attack happened. Had we been there for even 10 more minutes, we wouldn't have made it back," one of the tourists said. The group is currently safe in Srinagar.
In a similar instance, more than 50 tourists from Pandharpur, who had planned to visit Pahalgam, decided to cancel their trip and return to Maharashtra after news of the attack broke. 'We were terrified. No one wanted to continue after that. We took it as Lord Vitthal's blessing and decided to come back," said one of the group members.
Sangli's Palande family also had a close shave. Dr Vitthal Palande, who was vacationing in Pahalgam with his family, is an avid sketch artist. He had spent several hours drawing at the very spot where the attack occurred. 'We left that location just three hours before the shooting began. It's haunting to think how close we were," he shared.
Kishori Waghulde, wife of Jalgaon-based journalist Tushar Waghulde, was in Pahalgam with a travel group from Mumbai. She recounted how the group was quickly assisted by local security forces and safely moved out. 'We panicked after hearing gunshots, but the response was swift. We're now heading to Katra," she said early Wednesday morning.
The terror attack, which took place around noon in Pahalgam, claimed the lives of 26 tourists. The assailants, disguised in police uniforms, reportedly asked tourists about their religion before shooting them. Among the victims were six people from Maharashtra — three from Dombivli (Atul Mone, Sanjay Lele, Hemant Joshi), two from Pune (Santosh Jagdale and Kaustubh Ganbote), and one from Panvel (Dilip Desale). Others from the state, including S Balachandru, Subodh Patil, and Shobhit Patel, sustained injuries.
The horrifying incident has sparked nationwide outrage and renewed fears over tourist safety in the Kashmir valley. Many travel agencies are now suspending tours to the region as a precaution.

Tatkal booking needs Aadhaar authentication from July 1
Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 12 (UNI) With an aim to ensure fair and transparent access to Tatkal tickets and to safeguard the interests of genuine passengers, Indian Railways has announced key modifications in the Tatkal ticket booking system. These changes are aimed at enhancing user authentication and reducing misuse of the scheme. Effective July 1, 2025, Tatkal tickets booked through IRCTC's official website and mobile app will be available only to users authenticated with Aadhaar. Further, Aadhaar-based OTP authentication will become mandatory for Tatkal bookings made online starting July 15, 2025, a release said. Tatkal tickets booked at computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and through authorised agents will require OTP authentication sent to the mobile number provided by the user at the time of booking. This provision will also come into effect from July 15, 2025. To prevent bulk bookings during the critical opening period, authorised ticketing agents of Indian Railways will not be permitted to book opening-day Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window. For AC classes, this restriction applies from 10 am to 10.30 am, and for non-AC classes, from 11 am to 11.30 am. These changes are being implemented to improve transparency in Tatkal bookings and to ensure that the benefits of the scheme reach genuine end users. CRIS and IRCTC have been instructed to make necessary system modifications and inform all zonal railways and concerned departments accordingly. The Ministry of Railways urges all passengers to take note of these changes and encourages everyone to ensure Aadhaar linkage with their IRCTC user profiles to avoid inconvenience. UNI DS ARN

Only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book Tatkal tickets
Indian Railways on Wednesday announced that only Aadhar authenticated users will be able to book tickets online under the Tatkal scheme starting July 1 to ensure fair access for genuine passengers. In a circular dated June 10, the railway ministry informed all zones that this decision was 'aimed at enhancing user authentication and reducing misuse of the scheme'. 'Effective 1st July 2025, Tatkal tickets booked through IRCTC's (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited) official website and mobile app will be available only to users authenticated with Aadhaar. Aadhaar-based OTP authentication will become mandatory for Tatkal bookings made online starting 15th July 2025,' the ministry said. The Aadhaar safeguards come as the railways revealed it has blocked 24 million user accounts and flagged another 2 million as suspicious in the past six months as part of a major crackdown on misuse of the Tatkal ticketing system. Currently, only 12 million of IRCTC's 130 million registered users are Aadhaar-verified. The Railways has also introduced system-based OTP authentication at passenger reservation system (PRS) counters and for authorised agents. Railways said that users booking tickets at these points will receive an OTP on their registered mobile number, which will be required to complete the booking. This provision too will be enforced from July 15. 'Tatkal tickets shall be available for booking through computerized PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counters of Indian Railways/authorized agents only after authentication of a system-generated OTP, which shall be sent through the system on the mobile number furnished by the users at the time of booking. This shall also be implemented by 15/07/2025,' 'To prevent bulk bookings during the critical opening period, authorised ticketing agents of Indian Railways will not be permitted to book opening-day Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window,' a railways official said. 'For AC classes, this restriction applies from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM, and for non-AC classes, from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM,' he added. Railway authorities have directed the Centre for Railway Information Systems (organization responsible for designing, developing, and implementing various information systems.) and IRCTC ( a subsidiary of the Indian Railways that manages catering, hospitality, online ticketing, and tourism services) to carry out necessary system updates and inform all Zonal Railways to ensure smooth implementation. Passengers have been urged to link their Aadhaar with IRCTC profiles well in advance to avoid disruptions in booking. These changes underline the government's focus on ensuring fair access to Tatkal tickets and delivering the benefits of the scheme to genuine users.
