Algeria summons French ambassador over planned French-Moroccan military exercises

Ya Biladi07-03-2025

The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the French ambassador to Algeria, Stéphane Romatet, to formally protest France's participation in joint military exercises with Morocco.
During a meeting with the French diplomat, the ministry's Secretary-General, Lounes Magramane, underscored «the seriousness of the Franco-Moroccan military exercises scheduled for next September in Errachidia, near the Algerian border—'Chergui 2025,' a name that carries strong connotations».
Magramane further conveyed that «Algeria views this exercise as a provocation», warning that such actions could escalate the ongoing crisis in Algerian-French relations and heighten tensions between the two countries.
The Secretary-General also urged the French ambassador to «seek the necessary clarifications on this matter and relay Algeria's stance to his authorities in the exact terms communicated».
This diplomatic move comes despite the absence of an official announcement regarding the maneuvers. However, some media reports suggest that representatives from both armies have already held coordination meetings in preparation.
It is worth noting that Algeria has frequently conducted military exercises near the Moroccan border, using live ammunition—most notably in May 2023 in the Béchar region, in January 2021 south of Tindouf, and in May of the same year in Oran.

French Sports Journalist Sentenced to Seven Years in Algeria

Rabat – An Algerian court has sentenced French journalist Christophe Gleizesto seven years in prison, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Algerian authorities arrested the 36-year-old freelance journalist, who writes for So Foot and Society magazines, in May 2024 while working on a story about an Algerian football club. RSF and the journalist's employer, So Press, described the verdict as 'unjust' and confirmed that they will file an appeal today. Converging reports said Gleizes wasy arrested in Tizi Ouzou on May 28, 2024, and placed under judicial supervision for over a year. The charges against him include entering the country with a tourist visa, 'apology for terrorism,' and 'possession of publications for propaganda purposes.' He was transferred directly to prison after being sentenced in a first-instance trial. RSF believes the charges are politically motivated. The organization says that the 'terrorism' accusation is linked to past contacts Gleizes had in 2015 and 2017 with the head of the football club Jeunesse Sportive de Kabylie (JSK), who is also involved in the Movement for the Autonomy of Kabylie (MAK). The organization says Algerian authorities labeled MAK a terrorist group in 2021;, years after Gleizes' early contacts. RSF added that Gleizes was transparent about a recent exchange with the same individual in 2024, which was solely to prepare his sports article. 'This sentence makes no sense,' said RSF's director general, Thibaut Bruttin. 'It only shows that today, nothing escapes politics, and the Algerian justice system missed an opportunity to act with fairness,' he added. Franck Annese, the founder of So Press, also urged political and diplomatic efforts to help Gleizes return home. 'Everything must be done to ensure justice is served, and that Christophe can reunite with his loved ones and colleagues,' he said. The case comes in the wake of a major diplomatic rift between France and Algeria. Tensions have grown since French President Emmanuel Macron expressed support in 2024 for Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara. Relations worsened further after the arrest of French-Algerian author Boualem Sansal in November. Tags: AlgeriaFrancejournalist

Thousands of Nationalist Protesters Rally in Bangkok Demanding PM's Resignation

Rabat – Thousands of nationalist protesters have rallied in Bangkok this weekend to call for the resignation of Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. The protest came a few days after a phone call with ex-Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen about a border dispute. A border dispute, dating back to the French colonial period, between Cambodia and Thailand has led to recent tensions between the two countries. This is after a violent clash that emerged in May along the 817 km border. A recent phone call between Hun Sen and Paetongtarn emerged, where she was heard to be calling Sen 'uncle' and stating that she would support him in the dispute . This has made nationalists in Thailand furious. The phone call triggered the largest protests since the Pheu Thai party came to power in 2023. Thousands have braved the monsoon rains and blocked the roads to march on the Victory Monument. Paetongtarn Shinawatra has been the Thai Prime Minister since she was appointed in August 2024. She is the daughter of Thaksin Shinawatra, the country's former Prime Minister from 2001 to 2007. She is the second female Prime Minister after her aunt was removed by a coup in 2014. Many of the protesters have been carrying Thailand's tricolour flag and placards with slogans such as 'PM is an enemy of the state' and ' Ung Ing Get Out ! The protests were led by the Union Force of the Land, a coalition of nationalist activists, and their leader made a statement saying 'the executive branch and the parliament are not working in the best interests of democracy and our constitutional monarchy.' In response, Paetongtarn, before visiting the northern parts of the country, which have been hit hard by flooding since the monsoon season began, stated: 'The Thai people have the right to protest, as long as it's peaceful.' She also stated that she would not hold any more phone calls with the ex-Cambodian leader. However, the protests have been larger in both their scope and demands . This has triggered a constitutional crisis, and there is now a Supreme Court case against her, as well as a parliamentary vote of confidence that will take place. With these protests , the future of this Southeast Asian nation's democracy has been left in question.
