Shohei Ohtani appears to doze off during Dodgers' demolition of Yankees

New York Post2 days ago

Fans weren't the only ones dozing off during the Dodgers' demolition of the Yankees on Saturday. So was Shohei Ohtani.
Cameras caught the Dodgers' megastar with his head on the dugout railing and appearing to get some shuteye during the 18-2 victory over the Yankees. Ohtani quickly woke up and appeared to realize what was happening, but we can unofficially call it the first time a superstar has ever reached stage 1 sleep inside of the dugout.
It's hard to blame Ohtani for giving himself a rest. In addition to being a new father — he and his wife, Mamiko, had a baby girl in April — there wasn't much going on Saturday to keep anybody engaged.

The Dodgers put up four runs in the first inning and six more in the second, knocking Will Warren out of the game and rendering the last seven innings a slow procession to 27 outs.

Ohtani, who was 2-for-4, was lifted in the sixth for a pinch-hitter, as there was just no need for him to stay in the game.
While the Dodgers are tied with the Yankees in the loss column, the gap between the two teams looks like it's grown into a gulf since the World Series, when the Dodgers beat the Yankees in five games.

The Dodgers have dominated the Yankees in the first two games of the World Series rematch, beating them 8-5 on Friday — with Ohtani homering twice and the Bombers blowing a lead in the sixth — before embarrassing them on Saturday.
The series finale is Sunday night, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the mound for L.A. and Ryan Yarbrough for the Yankees.
Hopefully the Yankees can do enough for everyone to stay awake, with the game getting ESPN's primetime treatment.

Alvarez delivers 10th-inning RBI double and Mets overcome Ohtani's heroics for 4-3 win over Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Francisco Alvarez drove in his first run in four weeks with a double leading off the 10th inning, and the New York Mets overcame Shohei Ohtani's 23rd homer and tying sacrifice fly for a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. Francisco Lindor hit a leadoff homer and a 10th-inning RBI single for the Mets, who opened this National League Championship Series rematch with their eighth win in nine games. Ohtani hit a 424-foot solo shot off Max Kranick in the seventh, getting his fifth homer in seven games to tie Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh for the major league lead with 23. Tommy Edman singled and stole second to open the ninth before scoring on Ohtani's flyout to deep left. Mets closer Edwin Díaz (3-0), pitching for the third time in four days, was handed his first blown save in 14 chances this season. After Alvarez and Lindor delivered, José Castillo walked Freddie Freeman and gave up an RBI single to Andy Pages to open the 10th. Castillo struck out Max Muncy, and Freeman got to third on pinch-hitter Will Smith's flyout before José Buttó gloved Edman's sharp grounder back to the mound to secure his first save of the season. Paul Blackburn threw five scoreless innings of three-hit ball and struck out Ohtani twice in his first major league appearance since last August, when the Mets right-hander went down with a back injury before hurting his knee in spring training. Lindor crushed May's second pitch for his 14th home run of the year. Six are leadoff homers, tying Ohtani for the major league lead. Key moment Alvarez got his first RBI in 57 at-bats since May 4 with his drive to right off struggling Dodgers reliever Tanner Scott (0-2). Lindor drove in pinch-runner Starling Marte three pitches later. Key stat The Mets have won their last 27 games in which Lindor homered. That's the second-longest streak in major league history, trailing only the Brooklyn Dodgers' 29-game streak when Carl Furillo homered from 1951-53. Up next Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw (0-0, 4.91 ERA) makes his fourth start of the season Tuesday, facing Mets RHP Tylor Megill (4-4, 3.52). ___

Paul Goldschmidt Better Than Ever With New York Yankees

ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - MAY 27: Paul Goldschmidt #48 of the New York Yankees looks on in the dugout ... More during the game against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on May 27, 2025 in Anaheim, California. (Photo by) Aaron Judge might get most of the headlines with the New York Yankees. Deservedly so. Judge is a phenomenal talent, who is on a tear this season. Before the Yankees series opener with the Cleveland Guardians June 3, Judge is hitting a whopping .391/.485/.764/.1.248, with 21 homers and 50 RBIs in 262 plate appearances. But Judge isn't alone in creating havoc in the Yankees lineup. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt, 37, may be in the midst of his best year ever. Prior to the Yankees series with Cleveland, Goldschmidt has hit .333/.388/.486/.874, with six homers, and 28 RBIs in 238 plate appearances. The Yankees have a 5.5 game lead in the American League East. The dual threats of Judge and Goldschmidt can help erase the sting of Yankees fans losing Juan Soto to the cross-town New York Mets. SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - MARCH 19: Paul Goldschmidt of the Diamondbacks looks on during an Arizona ... More Diamondbacks MLB training session at Sydney Cricket Ground on March 19, 2014 in Sydney, Australia. (Photo by) At 6-2, 225 pounds, 'Goldy' doesn't have overwhelming size. He does, however, get plenty of strength from a proven, measured swing that has served him well for all of his 15-year career. Goldschmidt was an 8th round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2009 MLB draft. A six time All Star with Arizona, Goldschmidt played parts of eight seasons with the Diamondbacks, compiling a .297 batting average in 4,708 plate appearances. He hit 209 home runs, and drove in 710 in that span. Goldschmidt also made the All Star team with the 2022 Cardinals. Goldschmidt won three first base Gold Gloves with the Dbacks, and one with the Cardinals. Goldschmidt has won five Silver Slugger Awards. In 2018, when Goldschmidt was about to become a free agent, the Diamondbacks traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals; receiving catcher Carson Kelly, pitcher Luke Weaver, and infielder Andrew Young in return. Goldschmidt played six seasons with the Cardinals. He hit a combined .278, with 153 home runs, and 477 RBIs in 3,584 plate appearances. When he reached free agency this past fall, Goldschmidt signed with the Yankees on December 30, 2024. Goldschmidt is working on a one-year Yankees contract, worth $12.5 million. Goldschmidt's contract may be among the best pure values of any baseball player this season. In his career, Goldschmidt has earned: The 2023 National League Hank Aaron Award, which is bestowed upon the best offensive player in each league. The 2015 Wilson Defensive Player of the Year, which was awarded to the best defensive player at each fielding position in baseball. Membership on the 2022 All-MLB Team The 2022 National League Hank Aaron Award, as a repeat winner. The 2022 National League Most Valuable Player Award The 2023 Lou Gehrig Memorial Award, which is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the spirit and character of Lou Gehrig, both on and off the field. TAMPA, FLORIDA - FEBRUARY 18: Paul Goldschmidt #48 of the New York Yankees poses for a portrait ... More during the New York Yankees Photo Day at George M. Steinbrenner Field on February 18, 2025 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo) To this old scout, Paul Goldschmidt brings more than his baseball skills to the New York Yankees. Goldschmidt has always been an active participant in community events, and his leadership skills and compassion are evident to those in his presence. Strong, quiet, and unassuming, this writer remembers the times 'Goldy' and his wife spent in Children's Hospital and reaching out to other organizations in Phoenix. Diamondbacks fans, and the entire Phoenix community, deeply felt the loss of the Goldschmidt family when they moved to St. Louis. Young players, and even veterans who watch Goldschmidt, will see a player with very sound fundamentals on both offense and defense. Goldschmidt is not flashy. He may not be noticed on the diamond until he makes an outstanding play at first base, or hits the ball to the gap to drive in a run. Paul Goldschmidt leads by example. The Yankees made a great choice when they signed Paul Goldschmidt to the one-year contract. He has earned every penny already, and is in store for an even bigger pay day at the end of the year. All at the age of 37. 'Goldy' may be having the best year of his career. Yankees fans should get ready to see Paul Goldschmidt in his eighth All Star game. This time, however, he will be wearing Yankee pinstripes.

Mets' Mark Vientos 'going through all the testing' on hamstring after injury vs. Dodgers

Mets 3B/DH Mark Vientos fell after running out of the batter's box in the 10th inning on Monday night in Los Angeles against the Dodgers and appeared to grab his hamstring in pain. After New York's 4-3 win, manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters that Vientos was getting checked out by the trainers, but the injury "didn't look good." Advertisement "Yeah I was just there in the training room, he's getting looked at by the trainers, it's the hamstring obviously," Mendoza said. "Didn't look good. Like I said, he's going through all the testing so we'll wait and see." Vientos entered the game as a pinch-hitter for DH Jared Young in the top of the eighth inning and flied out. He finished the game 0-for-2 and is hitting just .230 on the year with six home runs and 21 RBI over 53 games. The Mets will now "wait and see" like Mendoza said as to what's next if Vientos is to miss time on the injured list. Brett Baty started at third base on Monday and has been strong defensively (in addition to at the plate) since returning from a stint in Syracuse, as the two have split time starting. Vientos heading to the IL could open up a roster spot for Ronny Mauricio to return to the bigs, as the slugging prospect has been on a tear in Triple-A. Mendoza said Saturday that the team has been getting "really good" reports on Mauricio, but they intend for him to get more reps while patiently "watching" his progress. Mauricio could fit in at 3B, 2B, and even DH.
