Trapped in basements, cut off by weak internet, and haunted by the fear of what the next moment might bring, many Indian students desperately await evacuation. Meanwhile, over 100 students have already been moved to neighbouring Armenia as the Israel-Iran conflict spirals out of control.
For Mehreen Zaffar, a medical student at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences, every siren is a jolt of terror, every blackout a chilling reminder of how fragile safety has become in conflict-ridden West Asia. The Indian student at Tehran University of Medical Sciences now lives in the shadow of war, as the skies over Iran's capital erupt with alarms and uncertainty.
"We are scared. We have been calling for help but nothing is happening," Mehreen told news agency PTI, with her voice trembling under the weight of uncertainty.
"Iran is on black alert. We do not know what is happening. We have been kept in a basement for safety purposes but we are scared. Since the internet is weak, we are unable to even contact our family members. Back home, they are worried for our safety," she further said.
Mehreen, the third-year MBBS student, is among more than 70 Indian students waiting to be rescued from a warzone that is tightening its grip by the hour.
For many, the only hope now rests on frantic diplomatic efforts and the promise of evacuation flights, as their families back home hold their breath.

"We have been calling for help but have not received anything. We do not know anything. We want evacuation. We have full hopes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and we need help. We cannot stay like this," she added.
Faizan Nabi, a 21-year-old student at Kerman University of Medical Sciences, also said the situation in his city, though tense, is not as severe as in Tehran.
"The situation is not as bad here (Kerman) as in Tehran.
But there is still fear. We are hoping that we will be relocated to some safe location soon," he said, adding that he has already started packing his bags.
Meanwhile, Huzaif Malik, a student from Urmia University of Medical Sciences, was among those successfully evacuated to Armenia by Indian authorities.
"We were in Urmia which was relatively safe. We have reached Armenia," he said.
As tensions escalate, Indian students in Tehran have been moved out of the city, with 110 of them successfully crossing the border into Armenia through arrangements facilitated by the Indian Embassy.
According to the Jammu and Kashmir Students' Association, all the students who crossed the Iran-Armenia border have now safely reached Yerevan, Armenia's capital.
They have been accommodated in hotels at designated locations and are scheduled to fly to Delhi on Wednesday. All necessary travel arrangements are being coordinated by Indian authorities.
The ministry of external Affairs (MEA) said in a statement that the Indian Embassy in Iran has been in continuous contact with the Indian community to provide all possible assistance.

Israel-Iran war: Donald Trump says will not kill Khamenei 'for now', demands unconditional surrender

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday stepped up his rhetoric against Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, saying that America knows his location but will not kill him "for now. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " On Truth Social, the US president in another post appeared to demand Iran's "UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!" amid its conflict with Israel. Trump's statement has sparked questions about whether US will join its ally Israel in targeting Tehran's leadership and nuclear facilities. "We know exactly where the so-called 'Supreme Leader' is hiding. He is an easy target, but is safe there -- We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now," he said in a post. "But we don't want missiles shot at civilians, or American soldiers. Our patience is wearing thin. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" Trump added. This post was followed by another, where he simply wrote, "UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!" As conflict between Israel and Iran escalated, Trump, on late Monday, flew back from the G7 Summit in Canada. According to reports, he was expected to meet top officials at White House on Tuesday (local time). Trump's latest post comes at a crucial point where he previously asserted that US is not joining the conflict. But he delivered stark warnings to Iran, urging it to take a deal to end its nuclear program. Trump on Tuesday also claimed that US has now "complete and total control of the skies over Iran." A few days back, Israel also made a similar claim. Earlier, Trump said that he want "a real end, not a ceasefire" to the Iran-Israel conflict, and warned that "I'm not in too much of a mood to negotiate."

Caught in crossfire, Indians in Iran want to return home

With the Israel-Iran conflict entering its fifth day on Tuesday, Indian citizens – from workers in Israel to students and pilgrims in Iran – caught in the crossfire are distressed, with many desperate to return home. While on Tuesday 100 Indian students reached Armenia to fly back to New Delhi on Wednesday, Indian citizens in the warzone told The Hindu that the air strikes and missile attacks have left them scarred. From a safe house in Iran's Qom, Hania, a fourth-year MBBS student at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, recalled seeing the men's dormitory being hit by an Israeli air strike. 'The glass windows broke and the hit injured at least two Indian students who were in the dormitory,' said Ms. Hania, who is from Jammu and Kashmir. Israel-Iran conflict LIVE updates After receiving instructions from the Indian embassy, Ms. Haniya and her peers took a cab to reach Qom, around 180 km from Tehran. Ms. Hania said she is waiting for the Indian embassy to evacuate her and other fellow Indians. Mohammed Ali, 40, a Noida resident who had gone on a pilgrimage with 40 others to Mashhad, Iran, on June 3, said that there is no clarity on what to do next and no information on how long Qom will be safe. 'How long can we wait inside a room? We do not know if we should stay put here (Qom) or arrange for ways to reach the Armenian border,' said Mr. Ali. In north Iran, at least 130 students from Tehran University have been sheltered in a safe house, with 15 in each room. Speaking to The Hindu, Abrar, a fourth-year MBBS student, said that at least three students were injured in Israel's airstrike, and barring first aid, they did not get any medical treatment. 'The students need surgical attention. But because of the war here, such injuries are not being given attention,' he said. In Israel, Indian nationals engaged at construction sites for the past year are still going to work but are worried about the missile attacks. 'You could be doing your work at the construction site, and when you look up, you either see a missile being intercepted or one being launched. These have become part of our lives,' said Haryana's Dinesh Malik, 38, a construction worker in Rishon LeZion, Israel. Tilak Raj, 40, another construction worker from Haryana, said that on the day of the air strike on Tel Aviv, all he could do was think about his family. 'It felt like the entire place would blow up and all I wanted at that moment was to see my family,' said Mr. Raj. He and other colleagues were all shifted to a site in Or Akiva, almost 50 km from Tel Aviv. But that has not brought him any comfort, for every time he spots a flare in the sky, a chill runs down his spine, and he fears the worst.
