
Jainism faced decline, transformation in Karnataka: Prof Devarakonda Reddy
Haveri: Prof Devarakonda Reddy, a renowned historian, explained that Jains were split into two groups, with one in North India and another in South India. While one group migrated to Tamil Nadu and preserved evidence of the Pandya Raja, Karnataka's Jain saints in Shravanabelagola failed to maintain ancient records.
Speaking at a two-day national seminar on Tuesday discussing Jain religion, history, archaeology, and culture at KLE's Gudleppa Hallikeri Degree College in Haveri, organised by Hampi Kannada University's department of ancient history and archaeology and Sri Abheraj Baldota Jain Culture Study Centre, he said the 4th century saw Jainism divided into Yapaniya, Kurchaka, and Digambar. North India had Shweta Pantha, as mentioned in the Devagiri inscription.
"In the 12th century, Ekanta Ramayya's followers demolished numerous Jain Basadis. The decline of Kalyani Chalukyas post-1160 and subsequent rulers' support for other faiths impacted Jainism significantly," he asserted.
Prof Reddy further said that the Chola invasions near Bengaluru and religious conversions contributed to their minority status. Jains and Brahmins led nomadic lives due to their trading practices.
The Ekkoti Jinalaya period saw renewed organisation and construction of Basadis. "Following Mahaveer's teachings, they embraced non-violence. Dakshina Kannada's rulers maintained this tradition," he added.
Prof Vasudev Badiger highlighted the importance of studying Jainism's origin, growth, and decline. Despite Jain and Buddhist emphasis on non-violence, Shaiva traditions flourished with numerous temples, whilst Jain Basadis remained few.
Balligavi served as a regional Jain centre until Ekanta Ramayya's forces destroyed Abalur's Basadis, establishing Shaiva temples instead. The Pattalakeri conflict between Shaivas and Jains resulted in the Jain defeat.
"Ekanta Ramayya's supernatural feats require logical examination. Twelfth-century Vachanakaras promoted equality and non-violence, with Bijjala's support. Evidence suggesting Basavanna and Bijjala supported Ekanta Ramayya is incorrect.
Veerashaiva differs from Lingayat traditions, with the former associated with Basadi destruction," he strongly pressed.
MM Holliyavar, the college principal, emphasised Indian religions' cultural contributions and historical religious competition. Prof Ramesh Nayak, department head, delivered keynote remarks.

AAP's Jain appears before ACB in classroom scam case
NEW DELHI: Former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain on Friday appeared before the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) for questioning in connection with an alleged corruption case concerning the construction of classrooms in government schools. Jain had been summoned by the ACB to appear for questioning. Before heading to the ACB office, he maintained that the previous AAP government had prioritised education in the city, unlike the present BJP-led administration. 'The previous AAP government in the national capital worked towards improving the city's education, while the current BJP government is only doing politics,' Jain said. The ACB had earlier summoned AAP leaders, former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and former PWD minister Satyendar Jain in connection with the case. Jain was asked to appear on June 6, and Sisodia has been summoned for June 9, according to officials. In April, the ACB registered a case against AAP leaders, alleging corruption in the construction of classrooms at inflated costs. The agency claimed that a scam worth Rs 2,000 crore had been uncovered in the construction of 12,748 classrooms and buildings during the tenure of the AAP government. The complaints were filed by Delhi BJP spokesperson Harish Khurana, BJP MLA Kapil Mishra, and Neelkanth Bakshi of the BJP's media relations department. They alleged corruption in the construction of approximately 12,748 school classrooms at an expenditure of Rs 2,892 crore. According to the ACB, the awarded tender cost for building a classroom was around Rs 24.86 lakh, while such a room could have been constructed for Rs 5 lakh. It was further alleged that the project was awarded to 34 contractors, many of whom are reportedly linked to the AAP. Joint Commissioner of Police (ACB) Madhur Verma said, 'It was decided in meetings of the expenditure finance committee for 2015-16 that the project would be completed by June 2016 at the sanctioned cost without any scope for future cost escalations. But not even a single work was completed within the prescribed time and significant cost escalations were observed.'

A road trip takes these friends back in time, to the medieval empires across the Deccan peninsula
A long-held desire to visit Hampi finally fructified in the guise of an all-girls road trip through Karnataka in March. It was an indelible adventure, one that, on the face of it, began in Goa and ended in Bangalore, but in fact wove five history enthusiasts through the vestiges of three dynamic empires spread across the Deccan peninsula and 10 medieval centuries. It is no coincidence that their once-thriving capitals are located near river systems. Waterways have long played a critical role in the development of civilizations, empires and societies, not least economies. In the case of the Chalukya and Vijayanagara empires, says historian Anirudh Kanisetti, the river valleys they arose in also held geopolitical and strategic importance. 'The Malaprabha river cuts through sandstone cliffs which provide an easily fortifiable area where you can raise crops, dredge various minerals, get sandstone to construct temples and post lookouts all over the cliffs — essentially the ideal heartland for a militaristic kingdom'. For an arid region that once produced nothing but millets, the Malaprabha river's rocky valley ultimately made amends by spawning an empire so powerful that it reigned supreme over the Deccan variously between the 6th and 12th centuries CE. Its pastoral founders reportedly borrowed their moniker from the chalke (crowbar), an essential implement for cultivators, and it went on to become synonymous with the empire's free-standing rock-cut temple architecture. The early examples can be found strewn across Aihole and Badami, the respective commercial and political power centres of the Chalukyan Empire. The finest of these temples are to be seen in the cluster at Pattadakal, their one-time cultural seat, located on a bend of the Malaprabha, a village so somnolent that it belies its past as the scenic setting of many a Chalukyan coronation. While taking a breather under a leafy tree near the stunning Lokeshwara Temple (now Virupaksha Temple), we imagine Queen Lokamahadevi — on whose behest it was built — sailing up the Malaprabha with her entourage, alighting on its bank, and walking through the large riverside gateway to supplicate before Shiva in the richly sculpted sanctum. One imagines this is also how the Ramalingeshwar complex in Aihole, best visited during the annual ratha utsav (chariot festival), would have been accessed. In its vicinity, on the ridge above a lone Jain cave temple, rock paintings and as many as 42 dolmens, are indicative of the valley's pre-historic antecedents. Alongside temples, we find the ingenious Chalukyas employing the Malaprabha's rugged terrain to their military advantage. They built the Badami citadel atop a gigantic, impossible-to-breach, sandstone promontory. While not much remains of the fortifications, the view from the top is breathtaking in every sense of the word — the climb up is neither for the unfit nor the fainthearted. After posing beside the stone chariot inside Hampi's musical-pillared Vithala Temple, our Rs 50 currency notes dutifully held aloft, we gave ourselves some downtime near the glittering and — warned a sign — crocodile-infested waters of the Tungabhadra. A two kilometre-guided walk along its rock-strewn bank, replete with shrines and monuments, would have brought us to Virupaksha Temple, the top attraction in Hampi, but the heat dissuaded us. Instead, we sat watching coracles ferry locals to and from the opposite bank. There, hidden from view by boulders and a verdant copse, was Anegundi, a prominent fortified town that predates Vijayanagara. Also where our first taste of authentic local cuisine, a lunch curated by the Kishkinda Trust, waited. We took in the calming blue as it gorged through the granite landscape. Kanisetti explains, 'The city's site, on the banks of the Tungabhadra, was strategically positioned to control the Raichur Doab, an important frontier between the Deccan Sultanates and the territories of Vijayanagara. The part of the Tungabhadra that the eponymous empire ruled over was much rockier, easy to fortify, but less suitable for populations. Vijaynagara solved this with extraordinary feats of hydraulic engineering.' By constructing dams, reservoirs, and rainwater collection systems, the Tungabhadra empire managed to transform the relatively inhospitable landscape into the seat of one of the largest cities of its time in the world. Many of these feats, the drawing of water for agriculture, drinking, and bathing, from the Tungabhadra, are still in evidence in Hampi. Most riverside temples are equipped with large step-wells (pushkarni or kalyani) to cater to the shrine's requirements. Canals built by Vijayanagara rulers continue to irrigate not just the farmlands flanking the river but even those further afield. Rainwater was harvested in several reservoirs that visibly encircle Hampi even today, like the expansive Kamalapura Lake. Another integral feature of Vijayanagara's extensive water supply system was the aqueduct. These raised water channels, as seen beside the step-well near Mahanavami Dibba, ensured the royal enclosure stayed well and truly hydrated. It is no empty boast then that Hampi once housed a whopping 400,000 inhabitants! The Yagachi Rivers in southern Karnataka are less rocky than their northern counterparts and the Hoysalas (sandwiched between the Krishna and Kaveri rivers) found them better suited for irrigation purposes. For other requirements, the rulers constructed a number of reservoirs. In fact, Dwarasamudra (Halebidu), the capital city they founded in the 11th century, stands on the shores of one such artificial lake. Those soothing waters can be seen beyond the well-tended grounds of the star-shaped and exquisitely carved 12th century Hoysaleshwar Temple. We had to ultimately steal ourselves away from Halebidu's intricate soapstone friezes and sculpted figures to head to Belur, their later capital, banked on the Yagachi. There, an equally magnificent Chennakeshava Temple held us in rapt thrall. When we finally left, we did so with the evening aarti reverberating in our ears. Could one have asked for a better send-off?

Haryana govt puts Nagina-Tijara road project on hold, irks locals in Nuh
The Nagina-Tijara road project meant to connect the Sarheta village in Nuh to Rajasthan, has been suspended until December 31, 2026, an official from the Gurugram Public Works Department (PWD), said on Thursday. The road, once touted as a symbol of inter-state connectivity, now lies abandoned and the project has been put on hold triggering anger among locals. The Haryana government official, cited above, was responding to a public complaint filed in October 2023. Originally launched in March 2018, following its announcement by then chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar during a rally in Punhana in December 2015, the project was expected to connect Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. The proposed 13-km-long road would have reduced the current 45-km detour between Nagina and Tijara, helping people to travel across these states. The official statement announcing the suspension has turned viral on social media platforms and has triggered anger among the locals living in Nagina, Punhana and Pinangwan, with multiple delegations now planning to meet CM Nayab Singh Saini and raise the issue. Convenor of the Mewat RTI Manch, Rajuddin Meo, who filed the original complaint on October 8, 2023, expressed his disappointment. 'This is not just any road—it was meant to honour the memory of Raja Hasan Khan Mewati. His statue was installed at Barkali Chowk in Nagina by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in March last year. A budget was allocated, but suspending such a significant project for two years raises serious questions about the government's intention,' he said. To be sure, the project has already faced numerous administrative and legal setbacks. It was awarded twice by the Haryana PWD to different companies. The first contractor, SKR Company, abandoned the work mid-way. A second firm was assigned the remaining stretch, but later approached the Punjab and Haryana high court in 2018, citing land and technical issues, leading to the construction being stalled. Although the matter was later withdrawn from the high court in 2019, work was not resumed. Beyond historical importance, the road holds religious significance for many in the region. Jain devotees from Mewat often struggle to reach the renowned Digambar Jain temple in Tijara, currently having to travel over 45 km via Ferozepur Jhirka. The Gram Panchayat of Notki and former Tijara MLA Ayub Khan have been advocating for this direct route. Earlier, in June 2011, then CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda had announced a four-lane road from Nagina to the Tijara border in the presence of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. A budget of ₹19.81 crore had also been earmarked with the promise being reiterated during the 2014 Haryana assembly polls. Now, with Sarheta's direct connection in limbo, residents of Sarheta and Kotla are deeply annoyed with the government's decision to suspend the project. A recent delegation led by Mewat RTI Manch and the Mouji Foundation raised the matter with sub-divisional officers in Tijara, Khairthal-Alwar DC, and the chief minister's office. Yet, with the PWD's latest confirmation of the project's suspension, many in Mewat feel betrayed and side-lined—fearing that the region's historical legacy and infrastructural needs will continue to be ignored. Superintending engineer, PWD B&R, (Gurugram circle) Praveen Chaudhary said, 'The demand regarding widening of the road from Nagina to Tijara, which consists of two different roads, has seen progress, with the Nagina to Notki Road (ID 1187) of 3.5 km approved in-principle for ₹1.5 crore. For the Notki to Tijara Road, while an agreement was terminated, new proposals for a 4km-long road in Haryana and a 2km-long road in Rajasthan are being considered, despite previous geotechnical investigation issues.'
