The weekend's United Rugby Championship quarter-finals left the impression that the consistent Bull, Cameron Hanekom, has stretched his legs towards the Springbok No 8 jersey temporarily vacated by the injured Jasper Wiese.
Another strong performance by Hanekom in Saturday's United Rugby Championship semi-final against the Sharks will surely secure him the position.
In April, Wiese's season in Japan came to a halt when he picked up a neck injury, prompting a return to South Africa for surgery. The 29-year-old is on the mend, but he is not on course for a comeback in time for the Springbok season that kicks off at the end of June.

The Boks warm up with a game against the Barbarians in Cape Town before their first meaningful engagement, the two-Test series against Italy in July.
And when Wiese is fit to return, he will need time off the Springboks bench to get closer to a start, as there is no other rugby available to him. As a Japan-based player, he cannot feature in the Currie Cup or anywhere else but with the Springboks.
The debate over who should be the long-term Springbok No 8 has raged since the end of the 2023 World Cup, when Duane Vermeulen retired.
The abrasive Wiese has been the man in possession, but Hanekom has been a star for the Bulls throughout the URC, even with a period of injury.
In the absence of Wiese, Hanekom's chief rival for the Springbok No 8 jersey has been the combative Stormer, Evan Roos.
Roos was not invited to the second Springbok alignment camp of the year, held two weeks ago in Cape Town. There was outrage in some quarters, especially in the Cape, but in last week's quarter-finals, Roos failed to take his opportunity to state his case to Bok coach Rassie Erasmus.
The Stormers lost disappointingly to the Warriors in Glasgow, and Roos struggled to make an impact on the game.
This was the perfect stage for the 25-year-old Roos to show Erasmus that he deserved to build on the six caps he has so far enjoyed for the Springboks. Since making his debut in 2022, Roos has played two games per year for the Boks.

18 G\A Kaizer Chiefs transfer target says goodbye to teammates!

Kaizer Chiefs have prioritised the revitalisation of their attack in the coming transfer window, I order to improve their fortunes. Chiefs woes in front of goals lasts season were well documented, with coach Nasreddine Nabi not shying away from them. This, however, has not been a problem unique to just last season. Even during the tenure of former coach Arthur Zwane, they have been trying to find a solution. Since then, they have acquired players like Christian Saile, Caleb Bimenyimana, Ranga Chivaviro , Tashreeq Morris and Glody Lilepo. Yet there has been no solution to Chiefs ' struggles in the box. What had improved last season under Nabi, however, has been their chances created. That hasn't, however, seen them stop their pursuit of another player that can both score and produce assists. According to FARPost , Chiefs are interested in signing Sekhukhune United's Keletso Makgalwa. Furthermore, they believed the player has already said goodbye to his teammates at Babina Noko. 'Sekhukhune United have taken a firm stance on the future of their star winger, Keletso Makgalwa, amidst interest from Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi. According to a Sekhukhune player, the former Mamelodi Sundowns attacker bid farewell to his Babina Noko teammates, sparking speculation about an imminent departure. However, sources within the Limpopo-based club have clarified that they intend to build their team around Makgalwa for the upcoming season. The 28-year-old player joined Sekhukhune on a three-year deal from Upington City FC after mutually parting ways with Sundowns.' Wrote the publication. Before last season, it was rumoured that Chiefs had signed Makgalwa, on an pre-contract from Upington FC. In the end, that proved not to be true, with the speedy winger going to register 11 goals and seven assists in the topflight. Chiefs fans, is a player like Makgalwa the type that is needed to boost the Amakhosi attack? Let us know by clicking on the comment tab. Or by emailing info@ or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Proteas impress with the bat in warm-up ahead of WTC final

Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma scored a solid 58 against Zimbabwe on Wednesday, Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix It is safe to say that South Africa ticked their boxes on Day Two at the Arundel Castle Cricket Ground on Wednesday, with captain Temba Bavuma, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs showing promising signs ahead of next week's World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's. Having lost the opening day of the warm-up match against Zimbabwe to rain on Tuesday, South Africa won the toss on Wednesday and sent Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton in to open the batting. Batting first was always in the plans of coach Shukri Conrad, who emphasised after the rained-out opening day that the priority was to give the batters time in the middle while allowing the bowlers to rest. A clash of two giants awaits at Lord's in a week 🇿🇦🇦🇺 Who will get their hands on the coveted trophy 🏆#WTC25 | #SSCricket — SuperSport 🏆 (@SuperSportTV) June 4, 2025 Video Player is loading. Wiaan Mulder (26) was next in and shared a 65-run partnership, with Rickelton before falling to Tanaka Chivanga (1/54). Captain Bavuma then came in at No 4, and the runs started to flow. The 35-year-old joined Rickelton in the middle, and the pair continued their excellent home summer form, in which both scored two centuries. Rickelton reached a composed half-century before retiring not out on 62, while Bavuma matched the milestone and also retired on 58. Between them, they struck 22 fours. Tristan Stubbs, who also enjoyed a prolific domestic season with two centuries, played a more measured knock. His 58 came off 120 balls and included only four fours and a six. David Bedingham (23* retired), Tony de Zorzi (28* retired) and Kyle Verreynne (9*) all spent time in the middle as South Africa declared their first innings on 312/3. With just under an hour left in the day, Bavuma gave the Duke ball to his frontline bowlers, Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen. The new-ball pair took time to find rhythm, but Rabada eventually struck, removing Brian Bennett — a wicket that likely brought relief to the fast bowler, who remains under scrutiny following a recent drug ban. Though only a warm-up, attention was on Rabada's ability to hit his stride early, as he has done throughout his Test career. He bowled four overs, finishing with 1/18, while Jansen ended on 0/13. Lungi Ngidi (0/4) and Keshav Maharaj (0/4) followed, conceding just eight runs between them. At stumps, South Africa led Zimbabwe by 279 runs.

Double World Cup-winning Springbok, RG Snyman, is one of the Leinster players, and Bok hopeful, hooker Marnus van der Merwe, represents the Scarlets. Hanekom, nominated for the SA URC Player of the Season award as well, has set the rugby field alight since his breakthrough last season and continued his fine form for the Bulls, despite some niggling injuries. Louw, nominated as SA URC Player of the Season, and Wessels have been the chief destroyers in the scrum for the Bulls. Feinberg-Mngomezulu was a fresh breeze in the competition and has entertained supporters in the Stormers' flyhalf jersey after taking over from the injured Manie Libbok. While an injury also impacted a part of his season, Esterhuizen has been a consistent performer in the backline of the Sharks throughout the season. With two awards behind his name, Hanekom will look to make it a third for the vital SA Player when he goes up against Louw and Feinberg-Mngomezulu for it. Another Stormers star of the past season received a URC accolade with lock Ruben van Heerden named as the Tackle Machine award winner.
