Crystal Palace finally confirm FA Cup parade plan but fans left furious

Daily Mirror23-05-2025

Crystal Palace have announced how they will celebrate their FA Cup victory over Manchester City with supporters - and confirmed when their bus parade will take place around Selhurst Park
Crystal Palace have confirmed their plans for a bus parade to celebrate their FA Cup win. The Eagles earned their first piece of major silverware with victory over Manchester City at Wembley and will now extend their celebrations with supporters to Monday May 26.
Eberechi Eze's first half strike earned the south London side victory against Pep Guardiola's men as goalkeeper Dean Henderson controversially avoided a red card. Palace have already lifted the trophy on the Selhurst Park pitch as they celebrated with a Premier League win over Wolves on Tuesday night.

And now they will host a more formal celebration to enable their fans to join the side and see the FA Cup trophy up close. The Eagles' FA Cup-winning heroes and their trophy will take part in an open-top bus parade down the SE25 streets on Bank Holiday Monday (May 26).

It will begin at the top of Whitehorse Lane from 13:00 on Monday and last 45 minutes as it completes a route that will turn into Park Road and down Holmesdale Road. A party on the pitch at Selhurst Park will then follow from 14:30.
The club will host a ticketed event, though it will be free, that will serve up live entertainment, special guests and the end-of-season awards for those in attendance. Standing tickets on the pitch and seats in the Main Stand will be available to witness a trophy lift or two.
But some fans have been left frustrated with the day's itinerary after a dispute with the local council forced a change in plans.
It was earlier reported that there were issues raised by Bromley Council over potentially using Crystal Palace Park for the FA Cup parade. And the council has now seen criticism after the confirmation of the route.
One social media user said: "@LBofBromley thanks for being party poopers, if you have had anything to do with stopping the parade. Don't get or understand why you wouldn't want this to be celebrated, this is a massive achievement! Shame on you!"

"The Crystal Palace bowl would have been the perfect place to end," said another. "Ready made stage which would require little setting up.
"Route could have travelled through Croydon and Selhurst past the ground, made it's way to Penge road left up along Penge high street then into the park."
"Be ashamed of your actions," said one frustrated fan. "The biggest and best thing to happen to South London in decades and you can't facilitate it."

Another said: "Oi @LBofBromley hang your heads on shame. Once in a lifetime opportunity here. No other council have banned these. Think of the South London children this will inspire."
As well as being able to lift the FA Cup trophy, Crystal Palace were also awarded a place in next season's Europa League. The club are confident that they will be able to compete in the competition despite their largest shareholder John Textor also owning Lyon, who could also qualify for the tournament.

UEFA's club financial control body (CFCB) is set to look into the case, but the Eagles are confident that there will be no issue as Textor's Eagle Football Holdings do not have the majority of voting rights.
Palace boss Oliver Glasner is not thinking about European competition just yet however, even with the Premier League season almost over. The Austrian said: 'It makes just no sense thinking and talking about the Europa League.

"It's so far away. I think this could be the biggest mistake you can do. My only thoughts are how we can improve our game, how we can improve as a team. here won't be big changes.
"I think from a financial perspective, Crystal Palace will never be a top four club in England. I think this club got promoted in 2013. Since then, this club has always progressed. Not huge steps. You can be a one-hit wonder. But then you're back. Then you're gone.
'It just makes no sense. That's why we said our planning shouldn't be: 'Now we play in Europe. We do crazy things and everything collapses'. We follow the pathway.
"Now we get a special reward. We can play in Europe. But we don't leave our pathway. This pathway didn't start with Oliver Glasner. It started with the new owners in 2010. For me the next step is to play between eight and 12 in the Premier League.'

'I received envelope from ex-Man Utd player – it was stuffed full of £50 notes'

A striker who enjoyed a successful career in the Premier League with both Manchester United and Everton has been praised for his generosity in a heart-warming anecdote Louis Saha displayed remarkable kindness by gifting a physio a hefty envelope filled with £50 notes as a thank you for helping him through his injury woes. The French striker initially made waves in the Premier League with Fulham, before he went on to join Manchester United in 2004. During his time at United, he clinched two Premier League titles, the Champions League, and a League Cup under Sir Alex Ferguson 's stewardship, bagging 42 goals across 124 matches over four years. Injuries, however, saw Saha fall out of favour, prompting his move from Old Trafford to Everton in 2008. ‌ Despite ongoing fitness battles, he still managed to score a commendable 35 goals in 115 games for the Toffees from 2008 to 2012. Saha's relationship with Everton's medical staff was notably positive, especially with ex-club physio Mick Rathbone. ‌ Rathbone, once dubbed the 'best signing ever' by David Moyes, recounted a touching story about Saha's generous act after signing a new contract deal at Goodison Park in 2010. "We were excited about working with Louis despite his injury-prone reputation," the former Preston medic wrote in his book, The Smell of Football. "In his first season at the club, we were extremely careful with him, in terms of not pushing him too hard. "We quickly gained his trust because he intimated that at all his previous clubs, he felt this had not necessarily been the case. By his second season we had developed a relationship that allowed us to push him harder. "In those two seasons, Louis played nearly 70 games and scored more than 20 goals for Everton, despite being injured and out for six weeks when he first came to us from Manchester United." Rathbone added: "When Louis signed his new contract in February 2010, Bill Ellaby, the player liaison officer, handed me an envelope. He explained it was a thank you from Louis. I was touched he had taken the trouble to thank me in writing. I opened the envelope thinking, 'F*** me, this is a thick letter.'". ‌ "But it wasn't a letter; it was an envelope stuffed with £50 notes. That is the type of gratitude I prefer. After all, let's face it, talk is cheap. Apparently, he rewarded every member of the medical staff in the same way. I think he respected us for the care and time we gave him. It was a magnificent gesture from a great guy." Saha may no longer be on the football pitch, but he's certainly not short of cash these days, with a net worth that dwarfs even that of Cristiano Ronaldo, his ex-teammate at United. Since retiring in 2013 at 35, the former France international has dived into the business world with impressive results. ‌ His enterprise 'AxisStars', co-founded with Kate Hamer, is now said to be valued at an eye-watering £4.3billion. The firm seeks to forge links between 'professional athletes and entertainers, their peers and trusted partners'. The business empire of Saha towers over Ronaldo's hefty £600m fortune, being more than seven times larger. Saha, alongside former marketer Hamer and tech guru Patrice Arnera, has seen his venture flourish. With over 550 ex-sports stars linked to the company, Saha admits that his enterprise, AxisStars, has eclipsed his achievements on the pitch. "I still get asked for advice by different people on a daily basis," he told The Guardian. ‌ "For instance, my agent called me to say he had a talented French footballer who he wants to bring to England, and asked me for advice on how to create a tailor-made training programme. I put him in touch with people I used to work with. "This kind of player could join Axis as he can then search for a personal coach in his region. It is a hard process but it's so rewarding, because if I can help 100,000 people, it's the best thing I've ever done." Kevin De Bruyne joins Napoli after turning down lucrative offer to leave Europe

Kevin De Bruyne has joined Napoli on a free transfer after leaving Manchester City at the end of the season. The 33-year-old opted to sign for the Serie A champions after turning down a move to the Chicago Fire in MLS. De Bruyne arrived in Italy on Thursday and was mobbed by Napoli fans before meeting owner Aurelio De Laurentiis. The Belgium international departed City after 10 years and said he remained confident of playing at the highest level. While he did not rule out playing for another Premier League club, De Bruyne was faced with a choice between Napoli and Chicago Fire. He joins a side who won their second Serie A title in three seasons last month and will link up with Belgium team-mate Romelu Lukaku in Naples. 'Kevin is proud to be one of us!,' Napoli posted on social media platform X. De Bruyne lifted 19 trophies at City following his move from German side VfL Wolfsburg - including six Premier League titles and the Champions League. He made 422 appearances in all competitions for City, netting 108 times and registering 177 assists, though injuries have limited De Bruyne over the last two seasons.

'Creativity, movement and sharp finishing' - what will Cunha bring?

New Manchester United signing Matheus Cunha has 27 goals in 65 Premier League appearances over the past two seasons and is regarded at Old Trafford as someone who can make an instant impact, while at the same time adding experience to the team."United are lucky they still have their historic appeal and reputation as a club, so players of the Brazilian's quality and potential want to move there," former England midfielder Fara Williams told BBC Sport."If he does, there is no doubt he improves the squad." Creativity, movement and sharp finishing - Cunha's flair and drive have often made the difference in tight has been the heartbeat of Wolves' attacking threat, scoring crucial goals, linking up play and unpicking defences with moments of individual addition, in 2024-25 he equalled the record for the most goals scored by a Brazilian player in a Premier League season, alongside Roberto Firmino (2017-18) and Gabriel Martinelli (2022-23)."Cunha has everything a United team would want," added Williams."You cannot question the qualities he possesses and the attitude he has in-game in terms of wanting to do anything to win."Cunha first played as a number nine at Wolves but those who have watched him regularly over the past couple of years say his best position is as a left-sided number natural inclination is to come deep and get the ball, and his strengths include running at defenders and 2024-25 numbers match up to those of United captain Bruno scored six times from outside the box - the same number as Fernandes managed. Cunha also registered 51 attempts on target - again, the same number as Fernandes.
