Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) President and famed actor Kamal Haasan on Friday filed nomination papers to contest for the biennial polls to Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu which are scheduled for June 19.
Haasan signed and presented the papers to officials at the State Secretariat in Chennai in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, and senior leaders from his party.

This marks his formal entry into the upcoming upper house contest. Elections for six Rajya Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu are set to be held on June 19.
Haasan was initially expected to file his papers earlier but deferred it, reportedly due to the backlash he faced for a controversial comment on the origins of Kannada.
Kamal Haasan Controversy
The actor landed in a big controversy recently. The South superstar attended the Thug Life audio launch event in Chennai, where he made a statement linking the origins of the Kannada language to Tamil. 'Actor Shivarajkumar is my family living in another state. That's why he is here. That's why when I started my speech, I said 'my life and my family is Tamil'. Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil. So you are included in that line," he said.
The actor's remarks quickly went viral and triggered backlash from pro-Kannada groups in Karnataka. They not only demanded an apology from Haasan but also a ban on his upcoming movie.
However, the actor refused to apologise, saying, 'If I am wrong, I will apologise. If I am not, then I won't."
This led to the situation getting escalated as the Karnataka Film Chamber warned that his new film, 'Thug Life', will not see a release in the state unless he apologises for his remark.
This prompted Haasan to move the High Court, seeking protection to release the film without disturbance.
Taking a stern view, the Karnataka High Court, earlier this week rapped the actor and asked him the basis of his claims, saying that his 'one apology would have solved everything".

Did you know that Raj Kapoor had predicted that Dilip Kumar will be an actor, the duo played soccer together
The enduring bond between cinematic legends Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor began long before the silver screen made them household names. Their friendship was rooted in a shared upbringing in Peshawar and a mutual respect that spanned decades. In a candid conversation with Lehren Retro , Dilip Kumar fondly recounted their early days, highlighting how Raj Kapoor had a significant influence on his journey into films. 'We come from the same town. I was born in Peshawar, he was born in Peshawar. Our families knew each other,' Dilip shared. He reminisced about their childhood games, particularly soccer matches, where Raj Kapoor's leadership shone through. 'He was the one who always used to say, when we used to play the game of soccer, he was good goalkeeper and a very good referee, particularly when we used to play against British army teams he used to assert himself… all as a little boy,' he recalled with a smile. Raj, even in those early days, envisioned a future in cinema for them both. 'So he used to tell me you go into films, we both will go into films,' Dilip said. However, acting wasn't initially on his radar. 'But I said no, because that was not the thing in those times you would aspire to do. So I used to tell him that you go, your father also does the same, so you should follow his footsteps.' Years later, fate brought them together again on a film set. Raj recognised Dilip instantly and reminded him of his childhood prediction. 'He said I told you you will be here,' Dilip recalled warmly. 'We had a lovely relationship,' he added, reflecting on the depth of their camaraderie. Interestingly, despite their close friendship and towering presence in Hindi cinema, they shared the screen just once — in Andaz (1949), a film that became both a critical and commercial landmark. Thug Life Box Office Day 2: Kamal Haasan's Film Witnesses Drop, Earns Rs 23 Crore
Last Updated: Thug Life, the Mani Ratnam-Kamal Haasan film, struggles at the box office with a 55% drop on Day 2, earning Rs 23 crore in two days. Looks like Thug Life is having a bit of a bumpy ride at the box office! The much-awaited reunion between Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan, 37 years in the making, had fans excited. But sadly, the film hasn't quite lived up to the massive hype yet. Thug Life is facing a tough battle at the box office, especially after the sharp dip it took on its second day. After a decent start on Day 1, the action-packed drama hit a speed bump on Friday, Day 2 of its release. Collections took a noticeable dip, with the film bringing in around Rs 23 crore. As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 7.50 crore across all languages on Friday, marking a steep 55 per cent drop from its Day 1 earnings of Rs 15.50 crore. With this, the film's total collection in India over two days stands at Rs 23 crore. What's adding to the pressure is the release of Housefull 5. Akshay Kumar's latest comedy dropped on the same day and matched Thug Life's two-day total, Rs 23 crore, in just one day. The clash proved especially damaging in the Hindi belt, where Thug Life was promoted heavily as a pan-India film. Unfortunately, it opened to a disappointing Rs 65 lakh in Hindi markets, and early estimates suggest that Friday's Hindi collection may be as low as Rs 25–30 lakh. With such numbers, trade analysts believe the film may find it difficult to even cross Rs 5 crore in Hindi during its theatrical run. But it's not just the Hindi version that's struggling as Thug Life isn't exactly lighting up the box office in Tamil either. The film's Rs 23 crore two-day total falls way short when compared to Kamal Haasan's previous hits. Remember Vikram? That Lokesh Kanagaraj blockbuster stormed into theatres in 2022 and raked in a massive Rs 60 crore in just two days. Even Indian 2, which didn't really impress critics or audiences last year, still managed a healthier Rs 44 crore over the same period. So yeah, Thug Life has some serious catching up to do. And to make things worse, the film didn't release in Karnataka at all, reportedly due to backlash over Kamal Haasan's controversial remark about the Kannada language. That definitely didn't help its numbers. Thug Life stars a fantastic ensemble including Trisha, Silambarasan, Joju George, Ashok Selvan, Nasser, Abhirami, and more. The music is composed by the legendary AR Rahman, with stunning visuals captured by cinematographer Ravi K Chandran. The movie's editing is handled by A Sreekar Prasad. First Published:
