Govt announces Rs 10-crore prize for new drug to treat sickle cell disease

The government on Thursday announced an award of Rs 10 crore to develop a drug for the treatment of sickle cell disease , which disproportionately affects India's tribal populations. Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited blood disorders that affect haemoglobin , causing red blood cells to become sickle-shaped and block the blood flow, which can lead to serious complications such as stroke, eye problems and infections.Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Eradication Mission on July 1, 2023, with the aim of eradicating the disease by 2047. The government aims to screen seven crore people up to 40 years of age as part of the mission.At an event to mark World Sickle Cell Day here, Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uikey announced the institution of the Bhagwan Birsa Munda Prize for the development of a drug to treat the disease.The minister said there is only one drug available as of now for the management of the disease. There is currently no option to select a drug from a range of alternatives based on the patient's body conditions and severity of the disease.He said this problem is worsened in special situations like pregnancy or the presence of other serious medical conditions. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a new drug.The tribal affairs ministry, in collaboration with the AIIMS-Delhi, will undertake a competition for the development of the drug. The selected proposal will be funded up to Rs 10 crore, Uikey said.He also said the ministry will establish a Centre for Tribal Health and Research Institute under the AIIMS-Delhi.This centre will also have outpatient and inpatient facilities for providing the highest-quality medical care to tribal people. Provisions for seamless referrals from peripheral hospitals in tribal-dominated areas will be explored, he said.The centre will also guide the government in policy formulation.The minister said a postgraduate course in tribal medicine will also be designed.This will help address the long-standing health inequities faced by tribal communities, who often remain underserved due to geographical, socio-cultural and systemic barriers, he said.This specialised course will be designed to develop a cadre of medical professionals with contextual knowledge, clinical skills and public health competencies tailored to tribal settings.

New Delhi [India], June 19 (ANI): The Delhi High Court has sought an expert opinion from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi (AIIMS) on a plea of an NDA candidate who has been declared medically unfit to join the upcoming course commencing on July 2, 2025. The High Court has directed the AIIMS to constitute a medical board and asked the petitioner to appear before it for examination on June 20. The petitioner, through his mother, has challenged the decision of the Air Force Central Medical Establishment declaring him unfit for enrolment in the Indian Air Force and the Tri-Services. During the medical test, the petitioner was diagnosed with 'haemoglobinopathies (Sickle cell disease, Beta Thalassaemia: Major, Intermedia, Minor, Trait and Alpha Thalassaemia, etc.). The Division bench of Justices Parthiba M Singh and Rajneesh Kumar Gupta issues notice to the Central government and other respondents. The High Court has directed to file an affidavit giving the reasoning for declaring the Petitioner as an unfit candidate by the next date of hearing. The Court during the hearing on Wednesday considered the Appeal Board's decision, and said that there is no clear reasoning given in the same. 'Considering this position, let a medical board be appointed by AIIMS, to give an expert opinion to this Court on the candidature of the Petitioner, considering the ineligibility clause,' the High Court ordered on June 18. The matter has been listed for hearing on June 25 before vacation bench. Petitioner has sought issuance of an order directing the Respondents to admit him into the National Defence Academy (NDA) for the session commencing on July 2, 2025. The Petitioner has challenged the two letters of March 18, 2025 and May 22, 2025, issued by Air Force Central Medical Establishment through its Commanding Officer, by which the Petitioner has been declared unfit for enrolment in the Indian Air Force, as also the Tri Services. The case of the Petitioner is that he was selected for enrolment in the Indian Air Force. It is stated that when the medical test was undertaken by the medical board, he was found unfit on the ground that he was diagnosed with 'haemoglobinopathies (HbE Trait). The Petitioner had stood at rank 266 in the NDA examination. The Petitioner was declared unfit through letter of March 18, 2025, for enrolment in the Tri Services. The Petitioner had appealed against this initial decision to the Appeal Board. The said board also rejected the Petitioner's candidature vide letter dated May 22, 2025. (ANI)

Two-day workshop on sustainable gaushalas kicks off in Ranchi
Ranchi: The Jharkhand govt has initiated efforts to make gaushalas (cowsheds) across the state self-reliant with an aim to strengthen the rural economy and promote sustainable agriculture. It was announced during a two-day national workshop on emerging challenges and opportunities in cattle care, organised by the Jharkhand Cow Welfare Commission, which began on Thursday in Ranchi. The event brought together veterinary experts, policymakers, researchers, and cattle rearers from across the country to discuss how cattle can be integrated into modern economic systems without compromising ecological balance. "Traditionally, gaushalas were limited to grants and basic support. But with the help of govt, we are now working towards making them economically independent. We've already physically surveyed all registered gaushalas, and initiated new models like the 'Jharkhand Go Gram', which aims to train 5,500 rural women in cow-based enterprises," said Rajeev Ranjan Prasad, president of the commission. From cow dung-based incense sticks and lamps to bio-fertilizers and online product sales, the state is looking to create a sustainable market chain around cattle by-products. "This is not just about tradition, it's about livelihood, empowerment, and climate responsibility," Ranjan added. Agriculture minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey who inaugurated the workshop, said, "Many states have cow welfare commissions, but very few show the commitment we are seeing in Jharkhand. Gaushalas here are being turned into hubs of self-sufficiency," she said, while acknowledging gaps in support and funding. She added that Rs 2.5 crore in aid was distributed to registered cowsheds last year, and the govt is working to ensure timely disbursal of grants. The workshop, attended by experts from states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat, included technical sessions on cow entrepreneurship, ecological benefits of livestock, and the role of indigenous breeds in health and nutrition.

Care kits given to sickle cell patients at NCH
Surat: On World Sickle Cell Day, care kits were distributed to patients at New Civil Hospital (NCH) on Thursday. Information on preventive measures for the disease was also shared with patients and their families. The Union govt has designated NCH a "Centre of Competence" for sickle cell disease. A special molecular diagnosis laboratory will be made operational for this, enabling early and accurate diagnosis of the disease. Currently, there are five sickle cell patients admitted to NCH. Sickle cell anaemia is a hereditary blood disorder, primarily found in tribal populations. Incidence of the disease has been recorded in states such as Gujarat, Odisha, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. NCH in Surat is the only institution in South Gujarat to become a specialized treatment centre for sickle cell patients. It offers comprehensive facilities, including counselling, vaccination, diagnosis, free medications, ICU treatment, orthopaedic surgery and a blood bank. It also provides advanced and free services such as special delivery care for complicated pregnancies, free hip replacements for patients with necrotic hips, automated blood exchange therapy for critical patients, an ICU and emergency treatment system and continuous blood supply through its blood bank.
