Kyffin Simpson crashes, nearly flips No. 8 car during Fast Friday practice run
Shortly into the Indy 500 practice run on Fast Friday, INDYCAR driver Kyffin Simpson lost control and crashed his Chip Ganassi Racing Honda into the wall at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
And miraculously, he was able to walk away from the wreckage and give an interview soon after.
Though Simpson is safe, the crash was terrifying. His car started to spin on a turn after a wiggle. Then he crashed into the wall and went airborne.
As the announcers mentioned upon watching replay of the crash, these INDYCAR rides are designed to keep cars from going airborne to the degree that they flip completely over. Design features, like additional holes made in the floor of the car, seem to have paid off here.
The No. 8 car did go airborne and did flip but not completely over. Instead, it landed on its side before righting itself again.
"By physics, you would have thought that car was going over, but the advancements that INDYCAR made on the floor of these cars definitely came into play there," FOX Sports INDYCAR analyst James Hinchcliffe noted.
And FOX Sports INDYCAR play-by-play analyst Will Buxton pointed out that the 20-year-old Simpson is a "lucky boy."
But again, this is all by design.
"I'm all good, praise the Lord," Simpson told FOX Sports pit reporter Georgia Henneberry after the crash. He also said that "It's a tough way to start Fast Friday."
Simpson mentioned that it was "a weird crash, everything about it was weird" before explaining that "even from outlap, just something didn't feel quite right." Simpson continued, saying, "It never really felt quite the way I expected it to."
Simpson's team has their work cut out for them now, as they try to identify just why No. 8 wobbled and spun into the wall the way it did and why it didn't feel right to Simpson even before that.
"We'll go back, look at some data, try to figure out what might have been wrong and try to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Shohei Ohtani thought he was ‘in trouble' before Dave Roberts gifted him a toy Porsche
The last time Shohei Ohtani thought he might be in trouble was when his name was linked to a federal investigation into illegal sports gambling in March 2024. His name was soon cleared by authorities, who charged and convicted Ohtani's interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, in federal court with surreptitiously stealing more than $17 million from the Dodgers superstar to pay off an Orange County bookmaker. Ohtani wondered if something was amiss Wednesday when manager Dave Roberts summoned him before the Dodgers' home game against the New York Mets. But not for long. Ohtani rushed into Roberts' office, saw a bright pink remote-controlled toy car on the ground and immediately started laughing. 'I have a gift for you,' Roberts told him. 'Actually, for your daughter.' 'For my daughter? OK, thank you.' Ohtani replied. 'This is from my wife [Tricia] and me to you and your family and your daughter,' Roberts said. 'So, we have jokes always. This is a little bit of a joke. It's a Porsche. This is going to be your daughter's first car.' 'Thank you, I love it,' Ohtani said. He tapped the car with his hand and said in English, 'I thought I'm in trouble. Some trouble,' evoking laughter from Roberts and others in the room. Ohtani had gifted Roberts a tiny toy Porsche a year ago when he broke Roberts' franchise record of seven home runs by a Japanese-born player, placing it in the manager's parking lot space as a practical joke. When Ohtani signed with the Dodgers in December 2023, he gifted Ashley Kelly, the wife of pitcher Joe Kelly, a Porsche — not a toy — for Kelly giving up No. 17. Roberts kidded Ohtani about gifting him when the modest record was inevitably broken, and the new Dodgers slugger obliged with the toy. It took Roberts — born in Naha, Okinawa to a Japanese mother and American father — a year to reciprocate. 'Shohei has been very gracious and we've got this long-running practical joke,' Roberts said on video. 'This is more of a sincere gesture, not necessarily a practical joke but I wanted to present it to him.' Ohtani and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, have not revealed the name of their daughter, who was born April 19. 'I am so grateful to my loving wife who gave birth to our healthy beautiful daughter,' Ohtani wrote on social media at the time. Indy 500: Josef Newgarden's three-peat attempt undone by fuel pump woes
Josef Newgarden entered Sunday with a chance at two different firsts in the Indianapolis 500 - trying to score the race's first three-peat and claim a victory from the deepest starting position in the event's history. Rolling off 32nd after his No. 2 Team Penske team was penalized for an inspection failure in qualifying, winning seemed to be an impossible task. But for a time, Newgarden looked like he might just have a chance to rise into contention. Advertisement Unfortunately for the two-time IndyCar champion, it wasn't meant to be. A fuel pump issue left Newgarden as one of more than 350,000 spectators at Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the race entered its closing stages. 'It's tough to not have a shot here at the end,' Newgarden said of his run. 'I felt really good, was trying to be methodical today.' Newgarden spent the bulk of Sunday's race keeping his head down and marching forward. Aided by an attrition-filled race, the Tennessean steadily marched forward and found himself inside of the top-10 in the second half of the race. He still had ground to make up, but with the final third of the race to run, the two-time defending race winner found himself on the periphery with a chance to contend for the win. But just as the opportunity to compete began to appear, mechanical misfortune reared its ugly head. Newgarden was forced to pit road for an unscheduled stop without fuel pressure on lap 135. Initially he was upset to be losing a lap, but the fuel pump issue ultimately left Newgarden out of the race in 25th. Advertisement Newgarden was happy to have had another chance to contest the Greatest Spectacle in Racing at day's end, but he was left to wonder what could have been. 'I'm still immensely grateful to run at Indianapolis,' Newgarden said. 'That's how I felt going into it today. I love the race the most. I love the opportunity to be on the grid. So as tough as it is to take, I still feel thankful to have been out here today. 'I just wish we'd had a chance to fight for it, you know? We didn't even get to see what we had there. We were just slowly working forward. Thank you to our partners, our whole team. Everybody puts so much into this. It's a big team. It's just a shame to not be there in the fight.' Commanders' handling of Terry McLaurin offers a contrast in how NFC East rivals operate According to Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports, Commanders WR Terry McLaurin exited a recent workout after growing frustrated with the team over the lack of progress on a long-term contract extension Terry McLaurin has been one of the best wide receivers in the NFL since being selected by Washington in the third round out of Ohio State. McLaurin has one year left on his contract, and he's looking for an extension after watching the team acquire Deebo Samuel and his $23,850,000 average salary from the San Francisco 49ers in an off-season trade. The veteran is the 16th highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL. With just $2,800,000 of his 2025 salary guaranteed, McLaurin recently exited a voluntary workout in frustration over the lack of movement on a new deal. McLaurin made his second Pro Bowl in 2024 after catching 82 passes for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns. Even more remarkably, the 29-year-old has recorded at least 1,002 receiving yards in five consecutive seasons, and he hasn't missed a game since 2020. In contrast to how Philadelphia and GM Howie Roseman do business, A.J. Brown has signed two extensions since being traded to Philadelphia, and DeVonta Smith is in the top 12 in wide receiver salary.
