What Makes A Derry Girl? launches on BBC Sounds and BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle

BBC News31-01-2025

Lisa McGee, writer of the multi award-winning TV series Derry Girls, once wrote that 'being a Derry Girl is a state of mind'. But what is it about this small city that has produced so much outstanding female talent?
In the new four-part BBC Sounds series What Makes A Derry Girl?, presenter Anna Curran talks to four famous 'Derry girls' to hear about their connection to the city.
The women of Londonderry once ensured the economic survival of the city through working in the shirt factories, with the city's the skyline dominated by the rooftops of 44 shirt manufacturers.
And as wives and mothers, the women raised children during the dark days of the Northern Ireland Troubles. Through it all, there was empathy, humour and creativity which are now woven into the fabric of the city.
In What Makes A Derry Girl?, Anna Curran, who is also from the city, chats individually to Eurovision winner Dana, actress and film producer Roma Downey, and actresses Amanda Burton and Jamie Lee O'Donnell, to discover what still ties them to their homeplace and makes them proud 'Derry girls'.
Anna Curran says: 'As a proud Derry girl I am thrilled to be fronting this series. I grew up watching Roma, Amanda and Dana on the TV and like audiences the world over I am a huge fan of Jamie Lee and the Derry Girls series. It has been a privilege to listen to their stories of success, struggle and everything that makes a Derry girl.'
The four-part series will be available to listen to on BBC Sounds from Monday 10 February.
It will also be broadcast on BBC Radio Ulster from 3-4pm from Monday 10 February- Thursday 13 February. And will be broadcast on BBC Radio Foyle across four consecutive Fridays from February 14 – Friday March 7 from 12-1pm.

Fans stunned by Celine Dion appearance at Coldplay concert amid stiff-person syndrome battle

Celine Dion sent fans into a frenzy as she made a surprise appearance at Coldplay 's Las Vegas concert over the weekend amid her ongoing health battle with stiff-person syndrome. The Grammy winner, 57 - who recently shared a moving message amid Eurovision's semi-finals - was spotted in the stands at Allegiant Stadium and received a sweet serenade from Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. In a TikTok video taken by one of the concertgoers, a camera panned to the songstress at one point during the evening - causing the crowd to break out into loud cheers and applause. Dion became emotional as she took in the warm reception and stood up to send a friendly wave before placing a hand over her heart. The Fix You hitmaker then began to give a special shoutout to the star as he sang, 'Oh Celine, my beautiful sister. You make my heart go on and on. 'Near. Far. You're a total superstar. Let's hear it for the legendary Celine Dion!' Martin concluded. She also appeared to be accompanied by her three sons Rene-Charles, 24, and twins Nelson and Eddy, 14 - whom she welcomed with late husband Rene Angelil. Another snippet showed Celine dancing on her feet as the band performed one of their hit tracks. Dion wore a pair of blue glasses as she grooved to the upbeat song and was also filmed making a heart symbol with her hands towards nearby fans. The Power Of Love songstress also shared photos from her time at the concert to both her Instagram and X accounts. In the caption, she penned to her followers: 'What an unforgettable evening with @Coldplay at @AllegiantStadium…My heart is still singing! 'A heartfelt thanks to the band and their amazing team for welcoming my family with warmth and kindness. It was all…fantastique❤️.' Social media users flocked to the comment section of the posts to share their excitement over seeing Dion at the concert with her children. One penned, 'What a special night! Thank you for gracing us Queen Celine!' while another typed, 'Wow Two musical giants in one space!' During the concert, Dion put on a stylish display wearing a chic gray suit while her locks were pulled back into a sleek bun. Back in 2022, Celine revealed her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis and canceled her remaining tour dates at the time. Stiff-person syndrome is a rare neurological disorder which 'causes muscle stiffness and painful spasms that come and go and can worsen over time,' per John Hopkins Medicine. In a video uploaded to her Instagram page, the singer had emotionally explained, 'Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life. 'Sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I'm used to.' Dion added, 'I'm working hard with my sports medicine therapist every day to build back my strength and my ability to perform again, but I have to admit it's been a struggle. 'All I know is singing. It's what I've done all my life, and it's what I love to do the most,' the mom-of-three continued. Last year in May, Celine gave a health update during an interview with Vogue and expressed that her 'happiness has come back.' She continued, 'It has been a big burden on my shoulders, and a lot of that weight's now I can just focus on reality. That's wonderful.' And during an appearance on Today also last year, the performer stated, 'I believe in myself, in my bravery' while adding that she will not let the disorder 'control my life'; seen above at 2024 Grammy Awards in L.A. And during an appearance on Today also last year, the performer stated, 'I believe in myself, in my bravery' while adding that she will not let the disorder 'control my life.' 'I'm going to come onstage because I'm ready. And my vocal cords will not scare me because I'm going to be ready, and I'm going to hit those notes.' Celine - whose experience with the disease was shown in her documentary I Am: Celine Dion - gave a moving performance at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics as she belted out L'Hymne à L'Amour by Edith Piaf. She also presented the Album of the Year award to Taylor Swift at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Renna went into cardiac arrest before later being declared brain dead after using a cleaning product to take part in the deadly challenge. The teen's heartbroken dad Aaron O'Rouke described how his daughter dreamed of fame. He told AZFamily: "She always said, 'I'm gonna be famous, Dad. Just you watch. I'm gonna be famous', and unfortunately this is not under the most optimal of circumstances." Aaron and his wife Dana shared their daughter's tragic story to raise awareness of the social media challenge. Dana said: "There's no ID required. It's odorless. It's everything kids look for. "They can afford it, they can get it, and it doesn't show in mom and dad's drug test." The mom explained how Renna and her boyfriend used an app delivery service to have the cleaning agent delivered to their door. She told 12news: "[Renna] and her boyfriend had Door Dashed product to my house and I didn't know. It's keyboard cleaner. I didn't know what they were doing with it. "We want to make sure that we use our tragedy so that no other parent has to experience looking at their child on life support and a ventilator and not breathing on her own all because she huffed out of a can." Pheobe Bishop cops arrest 34-year-old flatmate who was last to see missing Aussie teen on explosive journey to airport Dr. Randy Weisman, from the HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center, explained how inhaling aerosols can make users feel drunk or euphoric for a few minutes. But such use can result in liver failure, heart failure and lung disease among other irreversible issues - or death. He told AZFamily: "This is extremely concerning. "When they inhale these chemicals in the gas it will actually replace the oxygen within their lungs and within the rest of their body." Renna's parents said that the only light to come from her passing is that her organs have gone on to save at least six other people. Mom Dana said: "Through that we're finding strength and purpose. "She will be unbelievably missed, leaving the most aching hole in our lives, but if her life is to mean anything, we are going to do what we can to prevent somebody else's child from being where ours is right now. "She will be unbelievably missed, leaving the most aching hole in our lives, but if her life is to mean anything, we are going to do what we can to prevent somebody else's child from being where ours is right now." A post on the GoFundMe set up for Renna read: "On Sunday, June 1st at 1:30pm, our wonderful daughter, after 4 days in the ICU, was pronounced brain dead. "She was the light in every room she walked into, and the pain that her family and friends feel is simply immeasurable. "We want to use the proceeds of this fundraiser to cover the extensive medical bills, burial costs, therapy costs, and to spread awareness about the dangers of Huffing/Dusting, the practice of inhaling keyboard cleaner or similar."

Will Ferrell has said he is 'excited' to bring a musical version of the Eurovision Song Contest to Broadway. Advertisement 'We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway,' said Ferrell. 'The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.' Ferrell starred opposite Canadian actress Rachel McAdams, pictured, in the Netflix movie (Ian West/PA) The production will feature a book by Ferrell, Harper Steele, who both co-wrote the original film and were in the documentary Will & Harper together, and Anthony King, a TV and Broadway writer. Music will come from Savan Kotecha, who was behind the songs for the Netflix movie, and will be directed by Alex Timbers. Advertisement 'Will Ferrell and Harper Steele are my comedy heroes,' Timbers, a Tony award-winning director, said. 'And when I first saw their joyful movie Eurovision during the pandemic, it buoyed spirits during a very dark time. 'With this stage adaptation, I can't wait to bring that same mix of heart, spectacle, irreverence, and awe to audiences across the world.' In the 2020 movie, The Notebook actress McAdams, an Oscar nominee, and Elf star Ferrell play Icelandic musicians Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdottir who are competing at Eurovision.
