Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii hosts annual fundraiser ‘Great Futures Day'
HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii is preparing to host its annual 'Great Futures Day' this Wednesday, May 21, a fundraiser that supports youth programs across the islands.

Paddy Kauhane, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, said the event is rooted in the belief that every young person deserves a great future. The day brings the community together to raise funds for resources that help keiki succeed during and after school.
Donations directly support services such as nutritious meals, caring mentors, and enrichment programs. Clubhouses on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi will host lemonade stands, offer tours, and promote the event to raise awareness.'The need in our community is real,' Kauhane said. 'One in five youth in Hawaiʻi won't graduate on time, and 96% of the youth we serve come from families facing financial hardship.'
Annual membership fees are $25 for children and $10 for teens, but the actual cost to serve each child is about $2,500. Kauhane emphasized the club's commitment to equitable access, ensuring families never have to choose between paying bills and keeping their children safe after school.
As economic pressures grow, more families are turning to the Boys & Girls Club for support. Kauhane said the organization is committed to meeting that need but can't do it alone.
'In today's political climate, helping to shape the next generation of caring, community-minded leaders is more important than ever,' she said. 'An investment in BGCH now ensures our youth become the leaders we need tomorrow.'

The Bread & Butter Gourmet Deli on Pinellas Ave is known for its turkey, falafel and array of soups, salads, and pastries. It has created a unique fusion of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. The backstory The story of the deli started in Youngstown, Ohio, where owners Theo and Nellie Abbas met. Nellie said, "His best friend happened to be my brother's future brother-in-law. He brought me to a dance, a Greek dance. He met me there and that was it." From there, the couple moved to the Big Apple to learn the ropes of cuisine. "We had a deli in New York in Lincoln Center," Theo added, "One day I got up in the morning to go to work and it snowed. I had to clean four cars before mine. I said, 'forget about it. I'm leaving." Fast-forward to the summer of 1994, the couple purchased an old bank in Tarpon Springs, which would become Bread & Butter. "'94 I opened it. And the night before I opened it, Governor Lawton Charles came in here with 200 people. The next day, my line went all the way outside," he added, "I didn't think it was going to have an impact like that, so we didn't have enough food. We ran out of food." These days, there's a similar turnout after the couple announced they are closing the deli by the end of June. Nellie said, "We've gotten flowers. We've gotten cards and last week we got bombarded, we've had so many customers." We got to go." With Theo now disabled, they said it's time to slow down. He said it stems from an accident more than 20 years ago, "I fell off the roof and I struck my head, and I had a brain stem injury. I was in a coma at Bayfront hospital for 13 days. They gave me a 1-percent chance to live." Nellie added, "We have four great-grandchildren now. 7 grandchildren, so it's time to relax." What's next The couple plans to sell the building to a seafood restaurateur. Theo said, "It breaks my heart that I have to leave. But all good things must come to an end." The week-long event will kick off with a keynote address on Monday, June 9, and run through Friday, June 13. There will be more than 100 technical sessions for developers, as well as group and one-on-one lab sessions, Apple announced in a news release. USA TODAY will provide live coverage of Monday's keynote, along with the latest updates on the company reveals. Here's what you need to know before Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference 2025. How to watch WWDC 2025 The keynote for WWDC 2025 takes place at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, on June 9 at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT and be followed by a "Platforms State of the Union." The keynote is set to be streamed on Apple TV, the Apple YouTube page and at USA TODAY will also provide live coverage. What might be revealed at WWDC 2025? Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple is preparing a modest rollout of artificial intelligence features, targeting WWDC 2026 to make a larger splash. Gurman wrote in the Power On newsletter that the most significant AI announcement this year will be the opening of Apple's Foundation Models to third-party developers. He noted that the move is being made in hope of spurring the creation of new AI features and apps to help Apple catch up in the artificial intelligence market. Gurman also reported that Apple appears set to add a centralized gaming app in the next iOS update. He indicates the app will be preinstalled with the update and will be a place for users to launch games, find new titles, view leaderboards and communicate with other players. "The new app will serve as a Game Center replacement, and is more ambitious," Gurman wrote. "But it's unlikely to shake up the industry." iOS naming system to change with update: Reports Apple appears set to change the naming system for iOS on Monday, according to Gurman. The company will move from numbering operating system updates sequentially to numbering them by year in a manner similar to the way car models are identified. Under the new system, the Monday update will be iOS 26 instead of iOS 19. Gurman also reported that the Mac operating system will be named Tahoe after the Californian forest.

NBA at 'least a couple years away from launching' NBA Europe league, Adam Silver says
OKLAHOMA CITY — In March, the NBA and international basketball governing body FIBA announced a joint 'exploration of a new professional men's basketball league in Europe.' That's still moving forward, just don't expect it to happen quickly, Adam Silver told reporters at an NBA Cares event at a refurbished Boys & Girls Club in Oklahoma City on Friday, via Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press. 'I will say it's measured in years, not months,' Silver said. 'So, we're at least a couple years away from launching. It would be an enormous undertaking. And while we want to move forward at a deliberate pace, we also want to make sure that we're consulting with all the appropriate stakeholders, meaning the existing league, its teams, European players, media companies, marketing partners. There's a lot of work to be done.' Silver told reporters that the NBA is in talks with the existing EuroLeague (the basketball equivalent of the soccer Champions League, featuring the top clubs on the continent) about a partnership at some level. However, what that might look like (or if it would even work) is up for debate. The NBA's initial target was a 16-team league, something Silver previously said would be 'integrated into the current European basketball landscape,' which means teams would continue competing in their respective national leagues. There would be permanent members in the NBA Europe league (existing clubs and possibly some new ones) as well as a chance for teams to be promoted into it each year. Speaking at the NBA Paris games in January, Silver said the goal was to 'professionalize the game to another level here, to create a larger commercial opportunity' — to make more money, both for European teams, but also to expand the NBA brand (and with that make the American owners more money). Silver discussed the European league in terms of NBA expansion when speaking with the media before Game 1 of the Finals. 'We have been discussing potentially creating a league in Europe. I view that as a form of expansion as well,' Silver said. 'Again, just as the same as in American cities, we think there's an opportunity to serve fans in Europe. No knock on European basketball, because most of those international MVPs I just talked about are coming from Europe. There's really high-level basketball being played there. But we think there is an opportunity to better serve fans there. I view that as a form of expansion as well, and that's something we're also thinking hard about.' There are numerous stakeholders, and a lot of mouths to feed; putting together this new league is a massive challenge. The NBA owners will discuss next steps when they meet in July, Silver said. Whatever those next steps are, this is a process that will take years, not months.
