Gwinnett County Police arrested three suspects following the Feb. 26 confrontation at the RaceTrac on Beaver Ruin Road near Norcross.
'It appears that all the individuals knew each other or had some familiarization with each other,' said Gwinnett County Cpl. Juan Madiedo.
According to police reports, the victim had agreed to meet her former friend, 20-year-old Morgan Flinchum, at the gas station to sell a prom dress. The dress had originally belonged to Flinchum, but the victim's mother had helped pay for it, per the police report. As part of the exchange, they went into the store's restroom so Flinchum could try it on.

While inside, an unidentified friend of Flinchum grabbed the dress and ran. The victim rushed out, attempting to stop the individual. A male witness with her managed to retrieve the dress, but tensions escalated as the group moved near the gas pumps, according to the report.
Moments later, the victim was surrounded by Flinchum, Kaylee George, and Lelia DeJager, according to Gwinnett County police.
'There was a dispute, which ultimately was a civil issue between the dress and money owed to one of the parties. Obviously, in the video, you can see it became physical, and that's when 911 was called.'
According to police, surveillance footage shows one of the suspects choking the victim, who then flipped her attacker over her shoulder in a defensive move.
'There was a victim being surrounded by multiple individuals,' said Madiedo.

The victim told police she could not breathe while being choked, which triggered her self-defense response. After the flip, tensions remained high. As they waited for officers to arrive, another fight broke out when Flinchum allegedly swung at the victim, though the male witness stepped in to separate them. A second unidentified individual then grabbed the victim's hair, leading to another brief struggle.
Police arrived and reviewed store surveillance video of the incident. Officers documented visible injuries on the victim. The suspects later turned themselves in.
Investigators charged Flinchum, George, and DeJager with theft on Feb. 27. DeJager and Flinchum both face additional battery charges.
Authorities say this case highlights the risks of meeting in unsecured locations for online transactions.
'Here in Gwinnett County, all of our police precincts, including our headquarters here, have designated e-commerce parking,' said Madiedo. We invite any citizen out there, if you're looking to make a transaction, sell any items or purchase an item online, meet that person at one of our designated e-commerce locations.'

School teacher tries arranging sex acts with 9-year-old in Florida, feds say

A third grade teacher in the Tampa Bay area tried arranging sex acts with a 9-year-old girl while messaging someone he believed was their parent, according to federal prosecutors in Central Florida. When Lee Hughes, 45, of Pinellas Park, went to an 'agreed-upon location' on May 1 to meet with the child for sex acts, he was instead arrested as part of an undercover sting operation, prosecutors said. Hughes taught at Pinellas Preparatory Academy, WFLA-TV reported. The school announced on May 2 that Hughes was 'immediately terminated' in connection with his arrest. Before he was taken into custody, Hughes had been communicating with an undercover officer since June 2024 and repeatedly shared his desire to sexually abuse the undercover officer's 'purported' 9-year-old daughter, according to federal court filings. Now Hughes faces federal child exploitation charges. A superseding indictment charges Hughes with attempted transmission of harmful material to a minor, attempted enticement or coercion of a minor and receipt and possession of child sexual abuse material, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida said in a June 9 news release. Hughes' court-appointed federal public defender, Regine Soraya Lauren Etienne, didn't immediately return McClatchy News' request for comment June 10. In a motion seeking Hughes' pretrial detention, prosecutors wrote 'Hughes is currently employed as a third-grade teacher, which is the same age of child as he was attempting to coerce and entice over the past ten months to engage in illicit sexual activity with him.' On May 9, Hughes was ordered detained ahead of trial by U.S. Magistrate Judge Amanda Arnold Sansone, court records show. While messaging the undercover officer, Hughes sent them about 10 sexually explicit photos and videos of himself and asked the officer to show the images to their decoy daughter, according to prosecutors. In videos Hughes shared, prosecutors wrote in court documents that he was heard speaking with a noticeable British accent. Though he now lives in Pinellas County, Hughes is initially from the United Kingdom, according to prosecutors. 'Hughes had ample opportunity to cease his communications with the undercover officer regarding his desired sexual abuse of a nine-year-old child; however, Hughes persisted,' court documents say. On Hughes' cell phone, law enforcement discovered he had exchanged child sexual abuse material, according to prosecutors. If Hughes is convicted of all charges, he would face a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and up to life in prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. Concerns or suspicions about child sexual exploitation can be reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's CyberTipline online or by calling 1-800-843-5678.

Feds say they will retry state Sen. Emil Jones III on bribery charges after jury deadlocked in April

Federal prosecutors announced Tuesday that they will seek to retry state Sen. Emil Jones III on bribery charges after a jury in April deadlocked on all counts, leading to a mistrial. Assistant U.S. Attorney Prashant Kolluri made the announcement during a status hearing before U.S. District Judge Andrea Wood. Jones' attorney, Victor Henderson, asked for time to inform Jones, who was not present in court. The judge did not immediately set a trial date. Jones, 46, a Chicago Democrat and son of former Senate President Emil Jones Jr., was charged with agreeing to take bribes from an executive of a red-light camera company in exchange for Jones' protection in Springfield against legislation that would hurt the company's bottom line. Wood declared a mistrial on April 24 after the jury at least twice reported they could not reach a verdict. Before doing so, she polled them individually to hear about their progress. Afterward, she reported that nearly all of them suggested that no further progress could be made. 'Considering all of the elements and the concern that there could be a prejudicial impact of continuing forced deliberations at this point … I think it's appropriate at this point to declare a mistrial,' Wood said at the time. The jury of seven women and five men had deliberated for about 24 hours over four days before announcing they were deadlocked. The mistrial came nearly six years after FBI agents confronted Jones at his Roseland neighborhood home as part of a sweeping investigation into bribery schemes involving red-light cameras, liquor licenses and other graft across the west and southwest suburbs. At the heart of the probe was Omar Maani, co-founder of SafeSpeed LLC who agreed to work undercover for federal investigators after being confronted with evidence he was paying off officials in Oak Lawn in exchange for political support to add SafeSpeed cameras at additional intersections. Maani, who was granted a deferred prosecution agreement by the U.S. attorney's office for his extensive cooperation, was the star witness at Jones' trial, testifying for the first time in public about his prolific turn as an FBI mole. That cooperation also has netted the convictions of former Crestwood Mayor Louis Presta, ex-Oakbrook Terrace Mayor Anthony Ragucci, and Jeffrey Tobolski, the former mayor of McCook and Cook County commissioner. According to the charges, Jones agreed to accept $5,000 in campaign funding from Maani in exchange for Jones agreeing not to file a bill calling for a statewide study of red-light cameras, which SafeSpeed considered potentially damaging to its bottom line. Jones also offered to 'protect' the company from his friend, then-state Rep. David McSweeney, who had filed bills of his own calling for an all-out ban of red-light cameras, according to prosecutors. The charges allege Jones also asked Maani to give his former office intern a part-time job, which led to $1,800 being paid to the intern in exchange for no work. jmeisner@
